Court rules NY Yankees are baseball’s “Evil Empire”

Evil empireEarlier this month a panel of judges in Washington, D.C. denied a request from a private entrepreneur to register the trademark for the phrase “Baseball’s Evil Empire.”  The phrase was first used by Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino in 2002.

The judges wrote, “In short, the record shows that there is only one Evil Empire in baseball and it is the New York Yankees. Accordingly, we find that (the Yankees) have a protectable trademark right in the term … as used in connection with baseball.

This ruling will not come as a surprise by anyone in Red Sox Nation, but lest people think we Bostonians are not being fair, we now have a legal precedent confirming the Yankee’s truly are evil.  You may read the full story here.

Patriots are damn handsome

New England PatriotsI’m the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about football. Heck, I intentionally go grocery shopping when my brother tells me the New England Patriots are playing, because I know there will be less people there.

However, it seems to me that a lot of the guys who play for the New England Patriots are damn handsome so maybe I’ll check out the game later today. Pity you really can’t see them under all that padding and tights.

Suddenly it makes sense

Inspire a GenerationWhile perusing the Internet, I stumbled upon this photograph from the 2012 London Olympics.  Am I the only one who finds the “Inspire a generation” message a bit of a double entendre?

Feeling inspired?

Boston Santa Speedo Run

Santa Speedo RunToday, Boston hosted the 12th Annual Santa Speedo Run.  Inspite of the threat of rain, hundreds came out to run through the Back Bay.  Above is a photograph of the top fundraising team Straight As A Candy Cane.  These guys raised nearly $20,000 for this year’s beneficiary, The Play Ball Foundation.  Check back later for more photos from today’s run.

Brazil post: Rio 2016

If you are like me, you loved the London Olympic Games.  I am very excited to have these games finally find a host in South America.

In the summer of 2016 Rio de Janeiro will take up the torch that London passed to Brazil and this magnificent city will host the world to what I think will be one of the most memorable Olympic games in modern history. You can read more about the 2016 games here.

Suddenly it makes sense

Suddenly it makes senseIt is several weeks into the football season, and I continue to require these reminders why this sport has the potential to hold my attention.  Someone needs to let them know the under-eye goth make up is sloppily applied and overdone. I’d also suggest happier colors (think Keisha).

2012 Head of the Charles Regatta

Yesterday the Head of the Charles Regatta started.  This is the largest regatta in the world attracting more than 9,000 athletes.  Today, Sunday, is the final day and races are already underway.  If you live in the Boston area, go down and check out this uniquely Boston event.  Teams will be racing until 5pm tonight.  Below are a few photos taken from the first day of races on Saturday.

Head of the Charles Regatta starts tomorrow

Earlier this week I wrote about the Head of the Charles Regatta which starts tomorrow.  If you are around town on Saturday or Sunday, come down and check it out; races start at 8AM and run until 5PM each day.

Head of the Charles Regatta

HOCRThis weekend The Charles River, which divides Boston from Cambridge will host the 48th Head of the Charles (the largest regatta in the world).

The sporting event attracts 9,000+ athletes from all over the world, competing in more than 50 races over two days; 300,000 spectators are expected to descend upon Boston / Cambridge (many of them college students proudly and somewhat drunkenly cheering on their school).

RegattaRegatta is Saturday & Sunday from 8AM – 5PM

This event is uniquely Boston’s (and Cambridge’s too).  Like the Boston marathon, its an athletic event that falls far outside the purview of mainstream sports, but is a tradition many here support and enjoy.  If you are new to Boston or rediscovering the city, I would encourage you to come down and watch the Regatta. Harvard Square pubs and streets are overflowing with people and the city is abuzz with rowers who have come from all over to compete so leave your cars at home and use public transportation or bike to get close to the river.

NFL’s shameful profiteering from breast cancer

Those who follow my blog know that I have very little interest in football, but last week I happened to watch the New England Patriots game and noticed the pink emblazoned uniforms.

According to the Business Insider article Is the NFL profiting off of breast cancer?,  the NFL claims by purchasing pink items in the NFL Shop, fans can “support the fight against breast cancer with pink NFL breast cancer awareness gear.” is very misleading.

However, only 5% of these sales are being donated to the American Cancer Society. If the pink products have a typical 100% mark-up at retail, that means the NFL is keeping 90% of the profit from the sale of Breast Cancer Awareness gear.  So purchasing these items does little to help with research and prevention and predominantly ends up lining the pockets of billionaire NFL owners.

Shame on you NFL

Nude Blacks rugby game in New Zealand

Nude Blacks Rugby in New ZealandThe Nude Blacks

Last week those crazy Kiwis hosted a nude rugby game so the sports enthusiast you all know me to be couldn’t help but write about this event.  The Nude Blacks started ten years ago as a joke but became popular enough to stage matches in Dunedin prior to regular international rugby events and this year the event drew many spectators despite threatening skies and cool temperatures.

Can’t get enough of this story? Check out the local paper which covered this game and includes an unedited video (NSFW).
