SpeakEasy Stage Co. presents The Bridges of Madison County May 6 – June 3

This week I was able to attend SpeakEasy Stage Co.’s final production of their 2016/2017 season, The Bridges of Madison County. The musical which is based on the best selling novel and popular movie that starred Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, comes to life on stage thanks to a talented group of actors.

Boston native, Jennifer Ellis, who plays Francesca is a beautiful counterpart to the handsome out of town photographer, Robert, played by Christiaan Smith who spends much of the second act shirtless. It wasn’t hard to get swept up in their romance, considering how beautiful Ellis voice is and the fact that half the audience was gushing whenever Smith stepped on stage (yours truly included).

Christiaan Smith is one reason to see this excellent musical from The SpeakEasy Stage

In addition to the great casting, the stage’s deconstructed design of an Iowa farmhouse and their creative use of lighting was so well thought out and executed it really deserves a mention. I wholeheartedly recommend making a point to get tickets to see this show. Assuming your other half isn’t put off by how much you’ll drool over Smith, the show makes for a great date night. In case you think I’m being overly complimentary, read The Boston Globe’s rave review, which loved Ellis and the production as well.

SpeakEasy Stage presents Grand Concourse

SpeakEasy Stage Grand Concourse

SpeakEasy Stage production of Grand Concourse || Photo by Glenn Perry Photography.

This past week The SpeakEasy Stage Co. production of Grand Concourse opened. The one hour and forty minute drama addresses the mysteries of faith, forgiveness and compassion in a soup kitchen in the Bronx.

Despite the heavy sounding subject matter, the four member cast have several funny lines that guarantee periodic outbursts of laughter. For those who enjoy Latin men, Alejandro Simoes who plays the character of Oscar will make you smile whenever he is on stage (mas Alejandro por favor!) While I enjoyed the four member cast, and they worked well together, it was the slightly crazy character Emma played by Ally Dawson who I followed whenever she was on stage, wondering what she might say or do next.

This is the fourth production for the SpeakEasy Stage Co. 2016/2017 season, which has had one excellent show after another. Grand Concourse closes in approximately three weeks so make plans today and purchase tickets to go see this show. It will make for a fun night out or date option.

The stage play premiered on Broadway in 1961 and was an Academy Award winning film in 1964 directed by John Huston, starring Richard Burton, Ava Garnder and Deborah Kerr.

For this production the A.R.T. has pulled out some big name actors. The show is directed by Michael Wilson and the cast includes: James Earl Jones, Bill Heck, Dana Delany, Amanda Plummer, Elizabeth Ashley and Remo Airaldi.

Williams drama shows us how far people are willing to go to outrun their demons. The 1961 drama takes place on the edge of the Mexican jungle with a group of troubled travelers seeking shelter from a storm. It revolves around a hotel proprietress and a scandal-soaked Southern preacher, a Nantucket portrait artist traveling with her grandfather, a bus full of fuming Texan college administrators, and vacationers. Emerson Colonial Theatre will reopen in 2018

bosarts, boston arts, Emerson College, Ambassador Theatre Group

Photo Source: Colonial Theatre Facebook Page

Earlier this month Boston Magazine had an encouraging article for Boston Theater lovers. To quote the article, “Soon, Emerson’s Colonial Theatre will be dark no longer.

London’s Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), which oversees theaters around the world, has partnered with Emerson College and has plans to begin hosting productions in 2018. ATG will work with Emerson to also incorporate student programming and youth programs and they told The Boston Globe they envision the possibility of running Broadway tryouts of shows at The Colonial much like it did in the past. However, first the theater will first be refurbished.

All of this is probably music to the ears of theater organizations, that have been clamoring for more space. For established theater companies like the Boston Lyric Opera, which lost their home at the Shubert last year this could be very significant. Recognizing the need, ATG’s Chief Executive told The Boston Globe, “We are going to make every effort that we possibly can to support the Boston Lyric Opera’s search for a new home.
