About Mr. Teddy: Alec, Mark and Teddy found true love two years ago when Alec brought Teddy home for a three way and Teddy never left.  Like everyone, Teddy comes with some baggage, namely a Teddy Bear and a desire to call Marc and Alec his “Daddies”.  All is bliss until Alec’s friend, Allison, insists that Teddy is suffering delayed development and he must be pushed to grow up and leave his Daddies behind if he is ever to find true happiness.  Patrick, a friend of all three men, finally sees his chance to steal Teddy away for himself. The resulting confrontations have explosive consequences for everyone involved.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to see CARRIE the musical by SpeakEasy Stage Company.  I’ll admit that I didn’t know quite what to expect of a classic Stephen King novel that had been adapted into musical theater, but the cast made me a believer, and I think you’d enjoy this show as well.

Paul Melone does a fantastic job directing this New England premiere and it is definitely a worthy consideration for a date night or fun night out with friends. The cast does an impressive job and includes a number of good voices.

Do you have tickets to the show which runs through Saturday, June 7th? If not, you can purchase them here.

SpeakEasy Stage Co. presents: The Whale

SpeakEasy Stage Co.

SpeakEasy Stage: THE WHALE. Photo credit: Craig Bailey / Perspective Photo

The SpeakEasy Stage Company latest production, The Whale, is an emotional two act play that runs for nearly two hours and centers around the final weeks of Charlie, a morbidly obese, gay man who lives in rural Idaho.

The struggles Charlie face in this touching play written by Samuel D. Hunter and produced at The SpeakEasy Stage Co. by David R. Gammons made me uncomfortable at times. While his fate was never in doubt, I couldn’t help but wonder what would become of the motley cast of supporting characters: Liz, his co-dependent and enabling friend; Ellie, his angry teenage daughter; Elder Thomas, the persistent Mormon missionary; and even his ex-wife, Mary.

The Whale runs through Saturday, April 5th.  Get your tickets here.

Date night option: The Color Purple

SpeakEasy StageLast weekend I had the opportunity to see SpeakEasy Stage’s production of The Color Purple.  This musical is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg.

While watching a musical about a poor African-American woman living in the South in the 1930s may not be the first thing you think of when planning a night out, trust me – you are going to love this show.  The SpeakEasy Stage has assembled a large, talented cast that belt out amazing music and draw you in, making the time fly. As you might expect, the show runs the emotional gamut and provides ample fodder for conversation later. For my more shallow readers, the incredibly handsome Jared Nixon (shown below) might be sufficient motivation.
