The Real Men of Atlantis

Earlier this week I posted photos of guys from the Atlantis Events cruise I recently attended. You can see them here, The Real Men of Atlantis and Men of Atlantis. Here are a few more photos of guys I met last week.Jason is a nurse who wanted to get away from Toronto’s chilly winter and have a week of fun.  It’s odd how some people I rarely or never saw and then others I continued to bump into.  Jason was part of that second group and I’m so glad he was. He’s an absolute sweetheart.

Gregory was one of the Atlantis staff on board helping poor saps like me navigate their way around the ship and answering questions. As it turns out, Greg also happens to live one block from me in Boston. I had no idea until we started chatting.  This interesting guy is all smiles and very friendly.

Fernando came all the way from Columbia and when I met him mid way through the week at one of the bars on the 5th deck he was still trying to figure out what to make of the trip.  He loved the social aspect of the cruise and was considering checking out one of the singles parties. I wonder if this nice Latino met someone?

Daniel has a shy but friendly demeanor.  He is from the Salt Lake City area and recently met someone, which might explain his winsome smile.  Aside from meeting him briefly in the middle of the week I’m not sure that we crossed paths a second time.

The Real Men of Atlantis

Atlantis Events is masterful at creating marketing materials depicting men under 30 with less than 2% body fat, perfect sun-kissed skin with no hint of tan lines and a million dollar smile. While the cruise had many who fit this image perfectly, there was a wide range of men of different ages, shapes and sizes.

Here is a random sampling of men who may not appear in an Atlantis Events brochures or videos but who provide an accurate representation.

Chuck and Michael have been married for 5 years and live in Pensacola,  FL. They are regular Atlantis cruise goers and commented that this year’s cruise was far better because it wasn’t sold out so there was more room to move around and easier to enjoy the ships amenities.

Jeff and Abram (from Seattle) once upon a time were a couple but now are best friends.  They were fixtures at this bar on deck 5; always smiling and chatting with everyone. Some of their favorite things about the cruise? People watching (no surprise there).

Theo and Demos live in Cape Town South Africa and have been together for 2.5 years. They are part of a larger group of six other South Africans. They are a very cute couple to watch together and I bumped into them wherever I went.  Their favorite thing about the cruise ship? The shows.

Jie, Jett and Jehd flew down from chilly Toronto to enjoy the Atlantis Cruise. They too were part of a larger group of six friends who planned this trip together. This group of single men were enjoying the company of friends and a reprieve from Canada’s winter.

David and Eric live in New York City and are newlyweds.  When I met them on the ship they were busy signing up for the 2013 Atlantis Cruise to New Zealand and Australia.  Their favorite part of the cruise? Comfortable being themselves since everyone else is gay.

2012 Atlantis Caribbean Cruise on the Allure

I’ve recently returned from my first cruise.  There were eight of us in total who joined thousands of gay men from around the world for the Atlantis seven day cruise through the Western Caribbean.

Perhaps you’re curious to see what one of these cruises is like. It’s impossible to capture everything – there is too much to see and do, but here is a quick 5 minute video of my take on the 2012 Atlantis Caribbean Cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas.

Cruising the Western Caribbean on the Allure of the Seas

As I’ve mentioned previously, I was away on an Atlantis cruise through the Western Caribbean this past week.  This was the first time I’d ever been on a cruise and the Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas is one of the largest and nicest cruise ships available. The ship can hold more than 5,000 passengers and has more than 2,000 crew.

Overall, I enjoyed the vacation. Aside from the parties Atlantis hosted which resemble giant Pride events, I loved taking midnight dips in the jacuzzi on the 15th deck, taking naps in my room while listening to the crash of the waves, and traveling with the large group of friends who joined me and my partner.

During our trip I was able to see some hilariously funny and well put together shows (thanks to Atlantis Events).  I’ll talk more about the entertainment in another post but suffice it to say – there was a bit of something for everyone.

While I had no desire to sign up for one of Atlantis many upcoming  cruises (notably New Zealand and Australia in 2013), I’d consider going on another in the future, depending on the destination and the friends planning the trip.

Men of Atlantis

I’ve just returned from my first Atlantis cruise.  For those not familiar, Atlantis Events is a gay owned events company that produces all-gay cruise and resort vacations around the world.

I’ll talk more about Atlantis and my experience on the cruise ship Allure in future posts, but today I thought I’d suspend my “Men of Twitter” this week and replace it with a “Men of Atlantis” posting. Here are just a few of the guys who joined me on the week long Caribbean cruise.

For those fans of my weekly Men of Twitter postings, thank you for visiting. I hope you like this one-time special “Men of”… and next Monday I’ll return with a brand new Men of Twitter.

Vacation ends tomorrow

The Caribbean cruise I’ve been enjoying this week comes to an end tomorrow when we dock in Fort Lauderdale.  I’ll be able to review and approve any comments once I’m back home in freezing Boston.  I hope you have not missed me too much.

I’ll resume blogging as usual on Monday.

Atlantis Caribbean Cruise

On Friday I flew down to Fort Lauderdale, and today a group of nine of us will join 5,100+ other men on the Atlantis Allure Caribbean Cruise.

I’ve never been on a cruise before and wonder what I’ll make of the experience.  I’m fairly certain it will be a memorable, and after I return, I’ll be sure to blog about it and share some photos.

In the days that follow, I won’t have access to the internet so I’m scheduling posts from some of my most liked / and commented upon posts over the past few years to fill the void while I’m “cruising” the Caribbean.

How to survive a Boston winter

Back in September I wrote my first How to survive a Boston winter blog post.  In that post, I encouraged people who live in colder climates to book a flight to a warm destination because airfares are (usually) cheaper if you make the reservation ahead of time.

Today I’m in Florida.  Sergio and I flew down yesterday, Friday, and we will be boarding a cruise that starts out of Fort Lauderdale tomorrow.  Having this trip to look forward to has made the month of January fly by, and when we return although I’ll probably hate the cold, I’ll be in a much better frame of mind.

If you are living in a colder climate – I hope you too have a trip to look forward to break up the winter months.  I’ll be sure to tell you all about this trip.

Leaving on a jet plane

This morning Sergio and I are flying to Fort Lauderdale to start our vacation.  We’ll relax poolside for the next two days at the W Hotel and be joined by a half dozen friends who arrive today and tomorrow before we all board the Atlantis Caribbean Cruise on the Allure.

I’ve scheduled blog posts that will publish while I’m away, but once we depart on the cruise I won’t be able to approve your comments until I return so please be patient, and as always thank you for visiting my little corner of the internet.

Oy vey

In two weeks I will board a cruise ship for the first time.  While I’m happy to be getting away and I’m not the least bit nervous, seeing images of this luxury cruise ship run aground off the coast of Italy is a bit much to take.  My thoughts are with those who have friends and family missing, but I’m embarrassed to admit my initial response when I booted up and saw this image was “Oy vey”.

W Hotel Fort Lauderdale: 31 days and counting

One month from today, on January 27th I will board a Jet Blue flight to Fort Lauderdale (FTL), Florida to celebrate my partner’s birthday.  We will be joined by seven other friends who will be flying in to go on the Atlantis Cruise that leaves FTL on January 29th.  The respite from New England’s cold winter will be the perfect pick-me-up for all of us fighting the post-holiday blues.

I wanted to fly to FTL a couple days prior to the cruise’s departure for practical and personal reasons.   Should a last minute snow storm hit New England I wanted to make certain we had plenty of time to get out of Boston and not miss the cruise.  I also assume the W Hotel FTL will host many attending the cruise, creating a suitable party atmosphere for my partner’s birthday.

Travel day

Today there will be little time for banter as I hop from one meeting to the next before making a mad dash to Laguardia Airport to head home to Boston.

To all the people who read my blog and travel regularly, you have my profound respect.   The occasional business trip is more than enough for me.  I’ll leave my travel time to coincide with vacation when I can go where I want when I want.

BosGuy’s maiden (Atlantis) voyage

Earlier this week I surprised my other half with news that we would be going on the Atlantis Allure Caribbean Cruise January 29 – February 5, 2012.  He has always wanted to go on a gay cruise and this is a milestone birthday so with a bit of trepidation I booked the trip earlier this year and waited until this week to share the news so he would get excited about his birthday, which is now in a little less than two months time.

Although the two of us have never been on a cruise ship – let alone this massive gay cruise which will include 5,000+ men – we are in good company and will be joined by seven other friends who are familiar with Atlantis.   Let me know if you too will be joining this floating circuit party in the Caribbean.

Excuse me, but don’t I know you?

will.i.amToday I had a meeting at the W Hotel in Washington, D.C.  I was the first to the meeting so I settled into the lobby to kill time when I noticed someone familiar sitting across from me.  At first I could not place the face but quickly realized that it was will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas.  I’ll be honest, I did not know his name and had to Google the band to get it when I got home, but I was proud of myself for recognizing him.
If he was the only person I saw today, I would not have bothered to write about it, but when I was queing up for my flight home I bumped into a neighbor who was disembarking from my plane which had just arrived from Boston.  Then about an hour later (well actually two because my flight was delayed due to problems at Logan) when I was disembarking in Boston I saw David Gergen who lives in the Boston area and teaches at Harvard University.  I have to admit, it provides insight into how much of a nerd I am that I was more excited to see David Gergen than my neighbor or the pop star will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas.
