Boston.com book club: When You Call My Name

Boston.com’s Book Club has selected When You Call My Name by Tucker Shaw as this month’s book. The historical fiction novel, which was first published in May 2022 and is now available in paperback, is set in 1990 New York City and focuses on the complicated coming-of-age story many gay men and teenagers experienced at that time (your’s truly included).

As a special treat, the author, Tucker Shaw, will discuss his debut novel with Christina Pascucci Ciampa, the owner of All She Wrote Books. If you’re interested in joining the online discussion, there is still time to take the book out at your library or purchase it from your favorite local bookstore. But first be sure to register to attend the book club meeting on Wednesday, July 26 at 6 p.m.

The Birdcage shows at Coolidge Theater on Monday, July 10th

The Coolidge Corner Theater will be showing the 1996 classic comedy, The Birdcage on Monday, July 10 at 7:30p.m. If you’re looking for something fun to do at the start of next week, this could be a fun option to go with friends or someone special. I recently saw the movie and while it is dated in some ways (afterall their is no such thing as social media or iPhones), it still holds up and provides plenty of funny moments.

Furry Friday

Hey, my eyes are up here.

Past Furry Friday

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brain

Each Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together. Leave your guess in the comment section.

This week’s riddle: You’ll find me in your neighborhood, at the beach, and around town in the warm, summer months. My music attracts children, and wherever I stop they will come running with a few dollars in their hands. What am I?

I’ll approve responses later in the day to allow people to respond without seeing any spoilers.

Like riddles? Check out past week’s brain teasers.

Vintage gay

Looks like a hot makeout session at someone’s house, but I can’t figure out when this may have occurred. I think the guy on the left has some sort of uniform on – perhaps one of you may be able to place or date the photo based on his clothes.

En Vogue joins the Boston Pops for a July 4 party on the Esplanade

Tuesday evening the Boston Pops annual Fireworks Spectacular will take place with headliner, En Vogue. The tradition which started in 1929 has become a right of passage and when I first moved back to Boston, I spent more than a few July 4th holidays on the Esplanade watching these celebrations in-person. As the years have passed, I’ve moved from the Esplanade to watching the show from friends’ apartments in the Back Bay and more recently from home, which is where I think we will watch this year’s show.

If you would like to watch this from your home, The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will be broadcast and streamed live nationally on Bloomberg TV and radio, and locally in Boston on WHDH-TV Channel 7, on Tuesday, July 4 from 8-11 P.M.

For more details about guests performing and logistics surrounding the event, visit bso.org/boston-pops-fireworks-spectacular.
