LGBTQ curriculum to be added to MA schools

Considering the current political climate in the US it was interesting to see that earlier this week it was announced that Massachusetts schools will be able to try a new curriculum with LGBTQ-themed history, English and health this fall.

The curriculum, developed by a team of teachers with Massachusetts Safe Schools Program for LGBTQ Students and the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth, will be released this summer, and is expected to feature lessons on the 1969 Stonewall Riots and writings by gay and lesbian authors. It will also feature lessons like how Nick Carraway’s love for Jay Gatsby may have influenced themes in “The Great Gatsby.”

LGBT history

Allen Ginsberg on the left was was an American poet, philosopher, and writer. He is considered to be one of the leading figures of both the Beat Generation

The units are optional and the decisions of what will be included will be made at the local level. In case you missed it you can read the full article about this interesting change (for the better IMHO) in the Boston Herald article

gay bostonSometimes meeting people in Boston can be difficult so each Tuesday I feature a different gay / gay-friendly group or team to share with you ways to connect with people. BTW – by connect I don’t mean that you need wifi, I mean actually interacting with them in person. This week I wanted to feature the Boston chapter of Gays for Patsy who meet regularly.

The group happens to also have their Spring Stomp! Hoedown in Ptown later this month (April 27-29). It doesn’t matter your skill / level to participate but you do have to register and you have to be open to having fun.

For more information about the Boston chapter or to learn about their upcoming event in Provincetown visit them online at gaysforpatsy.org and definitely like their Facebook page, Gays for Patsy.

Frontrunners Boston

Temptation TuesdayIn less than a week 30,000+ runners will undertake one of the most difficult marathons in the world when the 122nd Boston Marathon takes place. It is hard not to be inspired by these people but for the majority of people a jog around the Charles River might be all you can commit to.

For those of you who may be looking for an excuse to be more active, I wanted to suggest checking out the Boston Frontrunner’s chapter. This club meets each week and has a social element following their Saturday runs, which gives you the chance to get to meet and connect with others. Do not worry about needing to be some amazing runner to keep up. Different distances are available for you to choose what is best.
