What to do this week: January 15 – 21

Movember, handsome, hunk, hairy man

For many who work in and around Boston, the week will start as a holiday as the nation remembers Martin Luther King Jr. and his message of peace, love and social justice. In honor his legacy the Museum of Fine Arts, ICA Boston & Isabella Stewart Gardner are all free and open to the public.

Later this week there remains a lot of fun things to do so make plans with friends or venture out on your own. During the work week check out dbar’s longstanding Showtune Tuesday; head over to Porter Square and join up with the Meetup group, Queer Boston Board Gamers on Wednesday; or on Thursday check out The History Project’s Hanky Panky: History & Cultural Impact of the Hanky Code.

This weekend things will really heat up as Boston’s largest Gay Ski & Snowboarding party, Winter Rendezvous Gay Ski Week will kick into high gear but if you’re not heading up to Stowe, VT you can check out Boyfriends featuring Kylie Minogue on Friday; the semi-monthly queer dance party Break the Chains on Saturday; or head over to Club Cafe’s monthly Sunday Bear Tea Dance.

Bob Mizer: Physique Pictorial

Bob Mizer, homoerotic, gay photography

Source: Bob Mizer Foundation

Gareth Johnson is a writer who I enjoy following on Medium for many reasons. This past week on Medium he had an article entitled, Physique Pictorial continues to fuel our fantasiesThe article introduced me to Los Angeles-based photographer, Bob Mizer, who first published in 1951 an all-nude, male magazine; pretty ballsy considering the times. Over the course of his career he would end up photographing thousands of men from a variety of walks of life.

Johnson says in his article that it was Physique Pictorial that first printed the drawings of Touko Laaksone (better known as Tom of Finland) and, which helped launch his career. Mizer passed away in the early 1990s but you can read the full article from Johnson about the man and the magazine on Medium.

You can see a lot more of his work in an article from The Advocate last spring:

Boston Gay Men’s Bookclub meets January 22nd

Boston Book FestivalBoston Gay Men’s Book Club will be meeting in a couple of weeks on Monday, January 22nd at the Trident Bookseller & Cafe in the Back Bay to discuss this month’s novel, Paul Takes The Form of a Mortal Girl, by Andrea Lawlor.

The debut novel from Lawlor puts a fantasy spin on gender and sex as the reader follows Paul, a bartender with shapeshifting abilities who uses his malleable appearance to explore humanity and intimacy through sex. Winding his way through the heyday of ’90s queer culture, Paul begins to question his motives, his future, and the true nature of his identity in this clever, provocative tale.

The book can be purchased online at major resellers but you may also buy this at local bookstores. If you’re open to supporting local bookstores try one of these links, which will take you right to the book so you can make a quick purchase.

Under attack in 2017: LGBTQ organizations see increase in donations

This past year many in the LGBTQ community have felt under attack. GLAAD details many direct and indirect things that President Trump has done and said over the past year here; a few highlights include:

  • Minutes after being sworn into office, any mention of the LGBTQ community were erased from White House, Department of State, and Department of Labor websites.
  • This past summer President Trump bans transgender service members from serving in “any capacity” in the U.S. military, threatening to fire 15,000 currently serving troops over Twitter.
  • This fall Trump becomes the first sitting president to speak at the Family Reseach Council’s Values Voter Summit, a convening of fringe groups united around discrimination against LGBTQ people.

Couple these with the 50+ actions and comments highlighted on the GLAAD page with the fact that hate groups like Neo Nazis and the KKK have been provided a platform, that they regularly use to thank President Trump and it isn’t a surprise that many in our community are upset.

Clinton’s abysmal loss came as a shock to our community and after coming to terms with the election results it appears that many of you are once again opening your wallets to resist. An annual analysis of LGBTQ movement by the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) finds revenue and individual contributions for LGBTQ organizations are on the rise again. You can read MAPs key findings press release here and download their report here.

Gay youth are 4x more likely to consider suicide

lgbtq suicideThere is never a good time to bring up a difficult topic but while I revel in the holidays – a lot of LGBQ youth find this time especially difficult. So even though it may seem inopportune to broach the subject, I wanted to share a report that has found a “startling rise in U.S. suicide rates” and more disturbing is the news that LGBQ teens are at far greater risk.

Researchers from San Diego State University recently conducted an experiment, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, to analyze suicide attempts among America’s youth.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioning teens were found to be more than four times as likely to attempt suicide.

The risk for gay, bisexual and questioning males was even higher, with nearly 39% of bisexual boys indicating they had considered suicide. Researchers lacked data on gender identity or trans youth, who may have an even higher risk.

I don’t think that my friends and family who are not LGBTQ can quite fathom the impact the messages coming from the Trump administration have. I was traumatized by the AIDS crisis and Reagan’s heartless response in the 1980s and it breaks my heart to think that in many of today’s youth may feel the same way.  While it truly does get better, when you feel isolated, telling someone to hang in there isn’t exactly a hopeful message. We need to do more for these kids. If you’d like to read the article that inspired this post, click here. If you’d like to help, you can volunteer or make a donation to The Samaratins and or The Trevor Project.
