The disruptive effect technology has on gay nightlife

gay dating apps, gay hook up apps, gay datingIt is not often that I read a story in the Financial Times that would be of interest or relevant to this blog so when I saw Grindr and Tinder: the disruptive influence of apps on gay bars in Disruption and Technology section I was intrigued enough to take a moment to read the article. It starts by sharing that  more than seventy gay bars have closed over the past decade in London. A trend that wouldn’t be news to anyone who is a regular reader of this blog, because the same phenomenon has been occurring here in the United States too.

Dating Apps like Grindr and Tindr are often cited as contributing to the demise of gay bars. The article reinforces that supposition, writing that gay men tend to be more open to adopting new technologies. While I would agree that most of my gay friends are early adopters of technology, I do think that is a generalization. However, the article also cites the findings from a recent survey by Match.com that suggested 70% of gay relationships start online; a staggering figure which goes a long way in explaining why so many gay men say it is impossible to meet in social settings. Sergio and I met in the late 1990s on a dance floor at a (now closed) gay bar in Cambridge called Manray / Campus. I suppose the days of meeting someone from across the dancefloor must sound like a scene from an old movie to 20-something. If you’d like to read the full article on FT visit: Grindr and Tinder: the disruptive influence of apps on gay bars.

Dr. Stephen Boswell resigns from Fenway Health over mishandling of sexual harassment complaints

Sexual Harassment, Dr. Stephen Boswell, Dr. Harvey MakadonDr. Stephen Boswell has been the chief executive of Fenway Health since 1997 and under his leadership he has turned Fenway Health into one of the nation’s leading LGBTQ health centers, with a $100 million budget that employs about 500 people and serves 29,500 patients annually.

However, his mishandling of sexual harassment complaints forced Fenway Health’s Board to ask for Dr. Boswell to resign this weekend. In his place M. Jane Powers, Fenway’s director of behavioral health and the only woman in senior management has been appointed as an interim chief, while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement.

Criticism of Boswell’s handling of sexual harassment complaints that centered around Dr. Harvey Makakon came to light recently when it was learned that he did not heed the advice of legal council which recommended firing Dr. Makadon, after conducting a thorough investigation into the allegations made by staff. According to The Boston Globe, Boswell also failed to inform Fenway Health’s Board about the allegations (including a$75,000 settlement). You can read the full story in The Boston Globe here.

Holiday gift idea: Warwick Rowers 2018 calendar

Are you and your friends planning a Yankee Swap or Secret Santa? Do you have a friend who is tough to buy for and you can’t spend a lot of money? Why don’t you consider the Warwick Rowers 2018 calendar?

At just under £10 you really only have to worry about ordering it in time to get here before your holiday party or gift swap.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the male rowers at the University of Warwick Boat Club, these men have been creating & selling calendars since 2009. Proceeds raised from the sale of their calendars, videos etc go to

  • Promote positive, inclusive and respectful attitudes towards people of all genders and sexualities through the content that they create
  • Fund university rowing and particularly to make rowing more accessible to a wider number of students
  • Ongoing development of Sport Allies, a registered charity with a mission to promote sport, and particularly team sport, as an inclusive and supportive route to personal growth for everyone

If none of that really matters, it doesn’t hurt that each year the young men are so damn good looking in that ‘guy-next-door’ sort of way. For their more revealing photos you’ll have to check them out online or better yet peruse their many products for sale, here.

How Gabe Kapler’s body image helped gay male sports fans

Boston Red SoxI wanted to highlight an article about body image and feeling comfortable in your own skin after reading an article earlier this month on the OUT Sports blog which featured former Red Sox outfielder and the next manager of the professional baseball team, Philadelphia Phillies.

Gabe “The Babe” Kapler (as I often referred to him) was featured in the blog’s post, Why new Phillies manager Gabe Kapler was important to gay male sports fansWhile I don’t know if I agree with all their points, I do agree that Gabe has an amazing body and has always been happy to pose shirtless. In an age where athletes continue to train to build endurance and avoid injury, Kapler was the rare professional baseball player with a great physique who liked to show it off.  While he is happily married with two teenage children, if my memory serves me correct he was a great advocate for his wife when she spoke out about domestic violence (something she had to contend with in a previous relationship) in addition to being socially accepting of LGBTQ issues.
