Saturday night video: Panti at TEDx Dublin

This talk was given by Panti at TEDx in Dublin, Ireland last September.  Panti shares her experience of the little, everyday things that can have a huge impact on the wellbeing of gay people and shares her thoughts on navigating a world in which the simple act of holding hands can be a political statement in itself.

Coming out

It is 2015 and for some, coming out and being true to who you are with your closest circle of friends and family can remain daunting.  Watching this video of the Rhodes Brothers who are fraternal twins brought me back to when I finally came out at first to friends and later my family.  It is hard to articulate how personal and terrifying this process can be for individuals and my heart broke all over again watching this clip.  I have no idea what their relationship with their father is like who apparently does not live near his sons, but his response was spot on, which only made me get more choked up.  Nearly 20 years later and I still get emotional watching the stress and pain associated with coming out.

Much thanks to NewNowNext for sharing this story since I don’t subscribe to the Rhodes Bros YT channel and missed this post from earlier in the month.

Coming out at work isn’t a reality for everyone

The Gay ClosetQueerty.com teamed up with Whisper to talk to LGBT employees who feel pressured to hide their identities from their bosses and coworkers for the sake of professional advancement.  The quote above is one of many that they collected and shared from their partnership.

I’m lucky enough to work where I can be honest about who I am, but the reality is that for many people this is not an option. I’d like to thank Queerty.com for reminding us that many still work in states where they can be fired for being gay and many, many more won’t come out because while they may not be fired, they know they will never advance in their career so they remain closeted.

Are you out to your coworkers? I’d like to know.

Caption this photo

men at work, construction workersYou may have noticed that on Wednesday mornings I’ve been starting to regularly post photographs that seem to ask for a creative caption.  I have to admit that some of you really rise to the challenge.  Take a crack at this week’s image of these two construction workers who seem to beg for a witty caption.

I’ll get you started with my own caption, “Much to Tom’s chagrin, Mike started singing Push It by Salt-N-Pepa.”  I’m sure you can do better. Make me laugh.
