This is easily the best tasting event of the season and one any foodie should not miss. Sergio and I have been attending this event for so long I can’t recall when we started going but it is truly one of my favorite charity events to attend.

A partial list of participating eateries includes Aquitaine bar á Vin Bistrot, Area Four, Banyan Bar + Refuge, Bar Mezzana, Barcelona South End, Blackbird Doughnuts, Boston Chops, Cinquecento Roman Trattoria, Five Horses South, Flour Bakery + Cafe, Formaggio Kitchen South End, Frenchie, Gaslight Brasserie, Haley House Bakery Cafe, Lion’s Tail, Masa, Metropolis Café, Meyers + Chang, MIDA, Petit Robert, The Elephant Walk South End, Stephi’s on Tremont, PICO, The Gallows and Mistral.

Tickets have been on sales since late last year so if you’ve yet to purchase your tickets don’t delay since the event generally sells out before the night of the event. For more information visit tasteofthesouthend.org.

Thank Larry Kessler at The HistoryMakers Awards at Club Cafe on Wednesday

Larry Kessler to be honored at The HistoryMakers Awards on Wednesday at Club Cafe

In 1995 – the same year that the combination treatment known as the “AIDS cocktail” became available to people with HIV/AIDS. The Action Committee  (AAC) produced a video highlighting the organization’s work, entitled A Community Responds. It depicts the first 15 very scary years of the epidemic and features Larry Kessler, then AIDS Action Committee’s executive director.

I had the pleasure of working for Larry Kessler, joining AIDS Action in 2002 just as he was stepping down as the founding executive director of AAC. Kessler’s work both directly and indirectly has saved tens of thousands of lives through his grass roots prevention and education efforts. He has also been the face of compassion for many left on their deathbed in the early days of the AIDS epidemic; forsaken by their friends and family and left to die alone – were it not for Larry Kessler. I’m sorry I won’t be able to make it to Club Cafe to see Kessler at the 2017 Heromakers Award Wednesday from 6-9PM.

AIDS Walk & Run is June 4

AIDS Action Committee, AAC, AIDS Walk BostonHeads up everyone! Sunday, June 4th is AIDS Action’s annual AIDS Walk & Run. Every year since 1986, our community has gathered on the first Sunday in June for this grassroots event to raise money and awareness. This event plays a crucial part in enabling AIDS Action to fulfill their mission and help maintain the health of individuals living with the disease, while working to prevent the spread of the epidemic. AIDS Action’s work is all the more important when you consider the lack of interest / support in Washington, D.C.

Today is World AIDS Day

HIV, Fenway Health Study, Stronger TogetherDespite amazing advances there remains no cure and new infections continue to be reported.  In honor of World AIDS Day, make a commitment to know your status if you’ve not been tested recently and encourage your friends to do the same. AIDS Service Organizations (ASO) around the country and the world, still need your support. Here in Boston, our largest ASO is The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts.  Visit their website, make a donation or volunteer.

New Fenway Institute study explores revolutionary method of HIV prevention

HIVThe Fenway Institute is conducting a study to test a manufactured antibody that will prevent HIV and help researchers learn how the antibody works.

The Fenway Institute is looking to enroll HIV-negative individuals between 18 and 50 years of age and in good health.  Anyone interested in participating in this study should know that it is impossible for the vaccines to give you HIV and cannot cause you to give HIV to someone else.  The study involves up to 11-18 half hour scheduled clinic visits over 8-months. Eligible participants will receive up to $975 for study completion.

While it is great that HIV treatments are prolonging the lives of those with HIV it is time we make AIDS history. If you agree and would be interested in learning more, please contact the Fenway Institute at 617.927.6450 or email bethechange@fenwayhealth.org.

Harbor to the Bay this weekend

Harbor to the Bay, Boston, ProvincetownNow in its twelfth year, Harbor to the Bay (H2B), a 120+ mile bike ride initiated to help raise awareness and funding for several local HIV/AIDS organizations, has raised nearly $3.5 million.

This year’s ride is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 20th. The ride starts at the corner of Boylston and Clarendon Street and concludes at the Boat Slip in Provincetown later that day.

I’d like to tip my hat to the organizers, volunteers and of course the many riders who train and fund raise for this event.  AIDS/HIV is no longer in vogue and the fund raising, prevention and education work is still as important as ever. Thank you  to everyone who helps make this ride a possibility.  If you’d like to learn more or possibly donate, visit their website, www.harbortothebay.org.
