Which 1980s John Hughes film character are you?

Jon Cryer

Duckie (played by Jon Cryer) in John Hughes 1986 film “Pretty in Pink”

Writer-director John Hughes defined the 1980s American high school experience with teen comedies such as “The Breakfast Club,” “Pretty in Pink” and “Sixteen Candles.” CNN currently has a short online quiz that tells you which Hughes character you most resemble.

While a part of me seriously relates to Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) in Sixteen Candles, I did love Duckie from Pretty in Pink. Who would you be in the John Hughes movie universe? Take the quiz and let me know in the comments section which Hughes character you most resembled.

The exhibit explores the vibrant and liberating decade between the Stonewall Riots from 1969 through 1980, just before we heard the first rumblings of the AIDS crisis.  The exhibition features over 115 works, including photographs, drawings and paintings made during this significant period in LGBTQ history.
The exhibit explores themes of political activism, body/self, fashion/style, and sexual freedom/expression.

Massachusetts film tax credit

Massachusetts film tax creditIn July 2007 then Governor Deval Patrick signed into law the Massachusetts Film Tax Credit, to encourage movie producers from Hollywood and around the world to film here.  Since then it seems like Boston in particular has been overrun with both TV and Film production crews, although in fairness some very prominent films that feature Boston predate the tax credit like the 1970s romance Love Story and a personal favorite the 1997 Good Will Hunting.

Although it has been controversial, I am in favor of keeping the Massachusetts Film Tax Credit and despite the occasional inconvenience of film crews closing off streets, I think it is really cool to see parts of my home city featured in films – even when it is supposedly some place else (usually NYC).

Well over 100 movies and TV episodes have been filmed since the 2007 tax credit including: The Proposal with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds (2009); The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale (2010), The Town with Ben Affleck (2010), TED with Seth McFarlane and Mark Wahlberg (2012); The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy (2013); American Hustle with Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper (2013); Spotlight with Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams (2015); and Ghostbusters 3 with Chris Hemsworth, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig (2016).

McDermott is getting attention again for a new book that is available for pre-order called High Line Nudes.

The forthcoming book juxtaposes the male form against impressive and iconic New York City architecture and is now available for pre-order from the publisher, Ten Avenues Press.

Astrological sign sculptures coming to Greenway

Ai Weiwei, Circle of Animals/Zodiac

Ai Weiwei with his dog head, part of the exhibition Circle of Animals/Zodiac

In April, Chinese contemporary artist, Ai Weiwei’s 12 mounted bronze statues entitled, “Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads” will grace part of Boston’s Greenway.  The 10′ high sculptures have already appeared in cities around the world including, London, Los Angeles, Taipei, and Paris.

These look a tad frightening to me and I’m sure they will be the subject of a lot of discussion once they are on display.
