Come down to the South End (450 Harrison Ave. to be exact) to meet local artists and view their work from 5-9PM tonight. The First Friday of each month more than 60 artists open their studios in the 450 Harrison building making it easy to walk around, socialize and see artists in their studios no matter what the weather is like outside.

Local galleries in the South End also support First Fridays by remaining open like, Boston Sculptor’s Gallery at 486 Harrison Avenue.  After chatting with local artists and viewing some of their work head over to one of your favorite South End restaurants to grab a cocktail and dinner. If you need any suggestions, give me a shout and I’m happy to play the role of concierge.

You can get more information about this monthly event by visiting the SoWa First Fridays Facebook Page.

Harvard Art Museums

Six years and $350 million dollars later, the Harvard art museums – the Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, and Arthur M. Sackler – have now been combined under one roof.  The Harvard Art Museums as they are being called open to the public later this month, starting Sunday, November 16th.

The expansion gives the combined museums 40% more gallery space to house their 250,000-piece art collection.  Not surprising, Harvard spared no expense with this thoughtful redesign, hiring Pritzker Prize winning architect, Renzo Piano, to create an impressive new home for Harvard’s most prized artwork.  The new Calderwood Courtyard is a great example of Piano’s work, which brings plenty of natural light through the glass-and-steel roofing and upper-level glass walls.   I’m looking forward to seeing this space open to the public and encourage you to check out the Harvard Art Museums.

Boston Athenaeum open house 12-4PM today

Boston AthenaeumLast week I wrote about today’s Boston Athenaeum open house which is today from Noon to 4PM.  With the weekend weather in Boston a bust, finding cool things to do indoors is a must so check out the open house.

Did you know the Boston Athenaeum is one of the oldest independent libraries in the US? It is also one of only sixteen extant membership libraries; meaning that patrons pay a yearly subscription fee to use the Athenæum’s service.

Boston Athenaeum Open House Noon – 4pm at 10 1/2 Beacon Street

Goya Order and Disorder at MFA Boston

Goya Order and Disorder

Goya Portrait: Antonia Zarate y Aguirre

Goya Order and Disorder

on view through January 19, 2015

The Goya exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston is a large and impressive collection that includes: portraiture, sport and allegory themed paintings, sketchings, print and tapestries.  The exhibit starts very light and almost joyful showcasing some of Goya’s most prominent portraits of Spanish nobility. The portrait above of Antonia Zarate y Aguirre dates back to approximately 1805 and was one of my favorites in the exhibit.

However, as  you walk through the eight room exhibit the family portraits give way to some darker subject matter. I’ve highlighted some of my favorites; the violence of sport (Bulls of Bordeaux), madness (Yard with Madmen), war (Attack on a Military Camp) and finally death (Garroted Man).  The exhibit officially concludes with  The Giant (also known as The Colossus) a smaller piece depicting a pensive giant looking over his shoulder.

Never too heavy handed, the exhibit really drew me in and gave me a greater
appreciation for Goya’s talent, the mediums he used and the external
influences that inevitably shaped his subject matter.

With colder weather on its way, this exhibit provides you with the perfect excuse to head to the MFA and check out this 170 piece collection.

Boston invests in cultural planning process

LGBT Boston, gay life bostonI’ll be the first to admit that I did not follow nor did I even vote for Mayor in the last election, but Mayor Walsh has really impressed me with his zeal and energy.  As much as I love Mayor Menino, Marty Walsh’s vision for Boston really excites me.  I agree with his call to invest in a long-term cultural planning process for the city of Boston and hiring a chief of arts and culture to help make that happen.

This past Sunday The Boston Globe had an excellent article Sketching an arts-centric future for Boston by Joel Brown, detailing some of the plans and investment the city of Boston is making to elevate and champion a cultural strategy intended to make our city stand out with major cities.  A 15-member steering committee is currently working to help make this happen.  For all you cultcha vultchas out there, this is exciting news.

Mount Gay rum now on Harrison

Mount Gay RumA week or two ago this advertisement for Mount Gay Rum was painted on a rather decrepit single story commercial building in my neighborhood. I kind of dig it and think of it as street art.  What do you think? I wish there were more painted building advertisements like this around Boston.
