Time Out Market Boston to open June 27

Boston diningTime Out Boston, a new (and highly anticipated) food hall has announced that it will open to the public in its new Fenway location on Thursday, June 27, 2019. Time Out brings together some of Boston’s best chefs under one roof. Think Faneuil Hall but amped up several notches; at least this was what Sergio and I thought after we stumbled upon Time Out Lisbon (shown below).

Occupying the ground floor of the 401 Park Drive building in the Fenway (just blocks from Fenway Park), Time Out Market Boston will showcase the city’s best chefs and restaurateurs, drink-slingers and cultural offerings, all handpicked by Time Out’s editors. The curated mix showcases 15 food offerings, two bars, a cooking academy, one retail shop and artists from across the city all in one iconic site–an Art Deco masterpiece built in 1929.

Some of the culinary options that will be a part of Time Out Boston include:

  • BISq (sibling restaurant to Bergamot) will serve mouth-watering charcuterie and cheese boards
  • Roman-style pizzeria from award-winning chef Michael Schlow
  • Mamaleh’s Delicatessen will offer its delicious deli classics
  • Chef Tim and Nancy Cushman – known for their restaurants o ya and Hojoko  will take over two kitchens with a pair of Asian concepts
  • James Beard-Award winner Tony Maws will serve Craigie Burger
  • 2 bars featuring seasonal craft cocktails, local beers, and a selection of more than 20 wines

Time Out Market Boston hours will be Mondays–Thursdays from 7:30 a.m.–11 p.m., Fridays from 7:30 a.m–midnight, Saturdays from 9 a.m.–midnight, Sundays from 9 a.m.–11 p.m.

Time Out has aggressive growth plans after the success of the hugely popular Time Out Market Lisbon which opened in 2014.  Time Out Markets are also set to open in Miami, New York, Chicago and Montréal in the coming year with more planned globally. You can learn more about Time Out food halls here.

MAAM: New contemporary art museum will open next year in Boston

A new contemporary art museum will open in Boston in February 2020 on the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) campus. Located  on Huntington Avenue, it will be near the Museum of Fine Arts and Gardner. The MassArt Art Museum or MAAM as it will be referred to, will encompass more than 15,000 square feet and be free to the public. MAAM will also have outdoor space in the Arne and Milly Glimcher Plaza for programming beyond the walls of the museum. Below are renderings of two of the new museum’s galleries.

You can follow the progress of what will be Boston’s newest museum by following them on Instagram at @MAAMBoston.

DotBlock gets approval from BPDA

Despite some opposition by residents, a hearing at the BPDA earlier this month to approve the “DotBlock”. The project was  approved to build a mixed-use development that looks to transform a collection of vacant parcels located at the juncture of Dorchester’s Savin Hill, Jones Hill, and Meeting House Hill neighborhoods. The development will include approximately 488 residential units; a mix of apartments and condos, across five mixed-use buildings. DotBlock will also include approximately 23,000 square feet of retail with underground parking for 360 cars. Among DotBlock’s residential amenities will be a pool and fitness facility and around 15,000 sf of green space.

The parcels on which DotBlock will be built front onto Pleasant Street, Hancock Street and Dorchester Avenue, three major Dorchester streets. The DotBlock site is located steps to Savin Hill Station on the MBTA Red Line.

Big Brothers shortage: Consider being a mentor

As a former Big Brother I can attest to how wonderful this organization is and how much good can come out of signing up to be a Big Brother. While I hope that I helped make a difference with the 12 year old I was matched up with for two years (we’ve lost touch in the years that followed), I got more out of the experience than I ever bargained and would recommend men in their 20s and 30s in particular to consider giving of their time as a Big Brother.

In case you are not familiar, the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay is to partner with under-resourced families to provide their children with transformational, one-to-one professionally-supported relationships with caring adult mentors, so that their children will thrive. Unfortunately, according to a JP news article, there are more than 200 children  waiting to be matched with mentors.

If you are interested in learning more about how to become a mentor, visit their website at, www.bbbsmb.org.

Southie’s Cambria Hotel will have rooftop bar

Rendering of the Cambria Hotel rooftop bar

There is a tremendous amount of construction taking place along the South End / Southie line. One of those projects is the Cambria Hotel, which is scheduled to open in late June across from the Broadway T station (located at 14 West Broadway). The 159 room, boutique hotel will feature what looks to be a beautiful rooftop restaurant and bar run by Boston Nightlife Ventures (BNV).

boutique hotel south boston, southie hotel

Rendering of the Cambria Hotel and 14 West Broadway

BNV is better known for their bars than their restaurants so the quality of the restaurant may be questionable but what isn’t up for debate is how great this will be for grabbing drinks with friends. There is no other space like it in the South End or Southie and is sure to be a favorite spot. Stay tuned for more details.

Changes proposed for Uber or Lyft rides to Logan Airport

Travel, air travel, BostonRight now, if you use a ride sharing app to catch a flight leaving Logan airport you’re dropped off right in front of your terminal, but last week Massport unveiled a plan that would redirect where ride-sharing drivers can drop off and pick up passengers (and of course potentially raising their airport fee to $5.00).

According to Massport figures, last year more than 5 million trips were made by cars driving out of the airport empty after dropping off passengers. The changes suggested are aimed at cutting that number by 30% while at the same time, by centralizing a drop off / pick up area (currently proposed to be at the central parking garage), decrease wait times for passengers and encourage more ride sharing drivers to stay at the airport to pick up customers before leaving.

Nothing has been confirmed as yet. You can read the full article here.

Boston Public Garden

bret clancy, boston skyline, boston winterEstablished in 1837 The Boston Public Garden is a beautiful park in the center of town. I thought I’d share this gorgeous photo taken by Bret Clancy who has many photos of Boston on his IG account and available for sale on Etsy here. Much thanks to Arts Boston Instagram for posting this picturesque photo of kids playing hockey last month.

New jazz bar will open in Dudley Square

One of my favorite historic neighborhoods in Boston is Dudley Square. This part of Boston was a vibrant community in the 1800s for wealthy Bostonians and later became a shopping hub and home to a large Jewish community. By the start of the 20th century, demographics changed once again and it became an important neighborhood for Boston’s African American community. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. worked as a minister at Boston’s Twelfth Baptist Church in Dudley Sq. when he lived in Boston.

Unfortunately, the neighborhood fell on hard times after WWII, and it wasn’t until the 21st century when city government started to reinvest in this neighborhood . A recent sign that this neighborhood is on the upswing was news that musician William Banfeld – a Berklee College of Music professor – will be opening a large cafe in Dudley Square’s Bolling Building that will include live jazz, dancing and theater. I love this neighborhood and will definitely check out the yet-to-be-named jazz bar and restaurant after it opens for business.
