Weekend on Winnipesaukee

I’m spending the weekend up at my parent’s house on Lake Winnipesaukee. If you are familiar with the area, the home is not far from downtown Wolfboro.  I’ll be spending most of my time at the house, checking out Dad’s new boat and playing with my neice and two nephews.  Connectivity is not really great so I’ll probably be offline for most of the weekend.

Have a restful weekend.

Happy Father’s Day

FatherHappy Father’s Day, Dad

I cannot think of a man I would more like to emulate than my Dad.  When I was younger I loved my father but could not relate to him (he was “old” and had a job that I couldn’t comprehend).  After graduating and moving out, my feelings matured and I developed a profound respect and admiration for the values my father lived / lives.

I’d also like to wish a Happy Father’s day to my brother-in-law, Travis, who is a father to three of the most adorable children I know, my cousin Chris who is now a Dad twice over as well as all my other cousins and uncles and friends who have strived to be the best parent they know how.  And although its not not Father’s Day in Brazil today, Feliz dia dos pais para voces Zeluiz (pai e filho).

My crazy partner

Work has brought me into New York City for a couple of days.  My lunatic of a boyfriend emailed me this video of himself to make me laugh and remember to call him.  I thought I’d upload it to YouTube so everyone could see my crazy partner; and by the way  I called him – definitely.

Happy Mother’s Day

MomMom – Happy Mother’s Day. Love you more than I can express.

Also, Happy Mother’s Day to my sister, Elizabeth; Happy Mother’s Day to Terezinha (Sergio’s mother and a wonderful woman); as well as to all my lovely aunts, cousins and friends who constantly sacrifice and fret over being the best parent they know how.

Happy birthday little bro

Boston GuyYou are an amazing man and one of the best people I know.

Happy birthday Mom

My mother is celebrating her birthday today. She is easily one of the most amazing individuals I’ve ever met and someone I’ve come to admire and appreciate more with each passing year.

I can’t adequately express how fortunate I feel to have been born into my family.  What a wonderful accomplishment she and my father have achieved, beating all the odds by raising four children all relatively well adjusted, happy and successful in their own endeavors.  Mom you are more amazing and special than you will ever realize. Happy Birthday.

Coffee Talk: This emotion called Love

I love my partner. He’s one of the most interesting individuals I’ve ever met. Thirteen years together and he can still surprise me; mind you not all of those surprises are pleasant, but I love the fact that he can still keep me guessing.

Having said that, last night we had one of those conversations old married couples have; those conversations that never seem to end nor provide an element of satisfaction for either party.  Forty-five minutes into talking about our home remodeling for perhaps the zillionth time it occurred to me “You (my partner – just to be clear) are insane” while another part of me was thinking “This must be love“. Who else would I ever argue for years on end about wall coloring, fabric and furnishings? Proving beyond any doubt in my mind, love is most definitely painful and certainly crazy.

Sorry, I’m suddenly getting a bit verklempt.  Discuss amooangst yooaselves…

Family wine tasting

Every Christmas my parents give a “family gift”.  When we were younger this was often a trip but as we got older and the family got larger, my parent’s started to identify things we could do together rather than places to travel and I have to admit I appreciate and enjoy this gift each year.  This year’s gift was a wine tasting at their home this past weekend.

My parents had a sommelier come to the house and pair old world wines (wines from Europe) to similar varietals from new world wines (everywhere else).  The tasting of eight different wines really interesting, and I think we all walked away with something that helped us better appreciate wines.Even though nearly everyone in the family preferred red wines, all of us really enjoyed the Domaine Carneros California sparkling wine from Tattinger. The bottle appears to retail for approximately $20.00.  My favorite red happened to be the biggest and boldest – a malbec from Argentina. All told, it was a relaxing and fun weekend.

Thanks Mom and Dad.  We all had a really great time and enjoyed the afternoon.  Can hardly wait to have one of these bottles with you when we see you next.

Sergio and Oscar

I don’t see many movies so I don’t get too excited about this award show. However, a few years ago Sergio was able to hold an Oscar that had been awarded to his employer.  I love the picture of him and figure if I was ever to share this, tonight would be the appropriate night.

So should you find yourself at an Oscar’s party or just curled up on your couch cringing at the dresses and ramblings of actors trying to  speak without a script – I’d like to wish you a pleasant evening to what I hope was a fun and relaxing weekend for you.

UNH vs. Merrimack College

Above from left to right: my father, my brother Tim, my partner Sergio, me, and my brother-in-law Travis.

This past Saturday I went to see the UNH / Merrimack College hockey game. The evening out and hockey tickets were a Christmas gift from my father.  In lieu of buying us things for Christmas, he has started planning things we can do together, and I have to admit I far prefer having these “dates”. Each year its a guaranteed great evening.

Happy birthday Dad

My father turns 65 today.  I love him very much. We’ll be driving up to NH to have lunch and spend the afternoon together. This is a photo of him with my mother from last year.

Happy Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States.

All week long Americans have been traveling so they can spend this day (and if they are fortunate, the remainder of the week) with friends and family.

Blogging will be limited while I spend time with my parents up at their lake house  on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Eve

Since Thanksgiving is so widely celebrated and significant to Americans it makes me wonder why we don’t have “Thanksgiving Eve”.   After all, we have Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and any American will tell you Thanksgiving ranks right up there with those holidays; many actually will tell you they prefer Thanksgiving.

Even though we don’t officially call it Thanksgiving Eve, there is a subdued demeanor with everyone I’ve talked to today. The inevitable lines and chaos at the airports are not apparent from where I sit and the traffic snarls of tomorrow are not a concern. This afternoon has been far more quiet than normal.

Sitting at home, I’m enjoying the peace and solitude which comes on the eve of each Thanksgiving.  For all those who celebrate this most uniquely American holiday, I wish you a lovely Thanksgiving Eve.

I’m just getting more awesome

This has been making the rounds online but I thought it worth sharing. I hope everyone feels as if they too are getting “more awesome”.
