Timothy proposes

Last night my family just got a bit larger… My brother Timothy surprised his girlfriend, Ashley, by proposing to her at their home in the North End.

After dinner he suggested they go to 28 degrees a martini bar in Boston where they had their first date to celebrate.  Although Ashley had no idea, Timothy had planned this out and clued in both families so we could be there to surprise and congratulate them.

It was a memorable night and a fun way to meet Ashley’s family who are friendly and easy-going.  There is something very nice about the way my brother planned the evening.  They were able to enjoy the moment alone together as well as share the evening with both families, making everyone feel a part of the special night.  Well done, Timothy and congratulations to you both. I couldn’t be happier for you.

My nephew Jack

On Sunday I was tweeting quite a bit about my niece Abby (age 2) and my nephews’ Austin (age 5) and Jack (age 7) who spent the day with us and stayed for a sleep over. The video below is of Jack when he was two years old singing along to Alicia Keys. I recognize that I’m biased, but he is damn cute.

Happy Father’s Day

I’d like to wish a Happy Father’s day to my Dad and let him know how special he is to me.

Celebrating with family and friends

Today is my birthday… not a milestone like last year but still a fun day is planned with family and friends.

My brother’s birthday is next week so we’ve combined our celebrations and will be heading to Fenway Park to watch the Red Sox game this afternoon joined by about 30 others. The day has started sunny but brisk (in the low 50s BRRRR). Hopefully the sun will remain and the mercury will start to rise before game time in a few hours.

My birthday wish this year would be that you have a wonderful day. Let’s spread some good karma around.

F1 Boston

Today I went to F1 Boston with my father, partner, brother and brother-in-law. For those unfamiliar, F1 Boston has two indoor tracks where you can race in miniature formula 1 cars (more like go-carts on steroids).

It was more fun than I expected. As it turned out my partner, Sergio, and brother-in-law, Travis, were the real speedsters finishing with the fastest times. However, I had a respectable showing with top speeds in the low 40s. In the first race I got into a fender-bender with my father (both of us claim its the other’s fault). I fared better in the 2nd race with higher top and average speeds. After, we headed out to dinner in Boston where we continued to talk about our pseudo-Formula 1 experience.

Weekend with the little monsters

I am an uncle three times over and the little monsters you see above are (from left to right) Jack, Abby and Austin. Periodically, we arrange for a sleep over to spend more time together. My sister and brother-in-law had tickets to take the boys to see Mary Poppins, which is currently at the Boston Opera House. So the entire family drove down last night to have a sleep over to make the most out of coming into Boston.

Last night consisted of a game of Uno (for the record Austin won), and today we spent a few hours at the Museum of Science. The two boys, Mom and Dad went to see Ms. Poppins this afternoon. Abby who is too young to sit through the show stayed at home with us and we watched a few episodes of Seasame Street.

After sitting through the entire show, the boys in particular had some pent up energy so we had an impromptu dance party where all three ran around my apartment shaking their little derrieres and grooving to the music before heading in the minivan for their one hour ride back home.

I’ve edited the dance-a-thon down to a minute of gyrations and claps.
Drat! After publishing this I realized that I meant to type Starring: Jack, Austin & Abby – not “staring”. I hate it when I make mistakes like that!

Movie date with the nephews

This afternoon I stepped foot into the movie theatre for the first time in about 2 years. What movie did I see? Not Burlesque. Not Black Swan. No, the big movie date was with my two nephews – Jack (age 6) and Austin (age 4) – to see Yogi Bear.

I took the picture above of the two boys as they waited with breathless anticipation for the movie to start. They had everything they needed: 3D glasses, juice boxes and more popcorn than they could consume in one sitting.

My favorite quote this afternoon was from my nephew Jack after I ordered a small popcorn he said loud enough for all to hear “Why do they call that a small? That’s not small.”

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N

My firm closes between the Christmas and New Years holidays, and I am joining most of my colleagues by extending that already lovely break by starting my vacation effective this evening.

For many this is an increasingly chaotic time but not for me. Work slows, allowing me to relax, and in the days leading up to Christmas I will pick up a couple of gifts. On Christmas Eve I will have a few friends over for drinks. The only chaos will be on Christmas morning as my nephews Jack (age 6) and Austin (age 4) rip open presents and run around my parent’s house in ecstasy. On the 26th, I will go to my friend’s house for her annual Boxing Day dinner party. The days after will be spent seeing friends and spending time with family at an equally leisurely pace. I recognize how fortunate I am to have this tradition which prolongs the Christmas celebration and allows me the chance to really disengage.

I’m probably the only person I know who thinks of this as a tranquil time of year. However, I do hope that you too can find some semblance of peace during these next couple of weeks and make the most of the time to connect with family and friends.

Puerto Rico

I returned from Puerto Rico this evening and although I love my apartment, I wish I was still there. Last Thursday, I left for Puerto Rico to see my cousin, Mike, marry his long time girl friend, Kate, at the el Conquistador Resort. I’m so glad that I went to this wedding – it was so much fun and the setting was spectacular.

The day after the wedding – on Saturday – we left to check into La Concha Hotel in San Juan. As my previous post indicates, I tweeted through out the vacation with images (thanks to TweetPic) including restaurant meals, men who caught my eye and beautiful vistas. I’ve included a couple of the men who were at La Concha below but if you’d like to see everything you’ll need to check out my profile on Twitter at www.Twitter.com/BosGuy.

He was all smiles, unfortunately he only had eyes for his girlfriend.

Happy Thanksgiving

I’m celebrating Thanksgiving with family at my parent’s lake house in New Hampshire. Normally I reserve this holiday week to plan an international trip and as such have not been home for Thanksgiving in more than six years. It is nice being home and I’d like to express my wishes of thanks to all who happen upon my blog regardless of where you live and if you celebrate this most American of holidays.

Puerto Rico in December

My cousin’s wedding invitation arrived in a small box outside my door last night.  Inside was the details of their destination wedding that will take place the first week of December in Puerto Rico.  To make sure we could get a good fare, this afternoon, I hopped on the Jet Blue website and booked our tickets.  We decided we would extend our stay by a few days and turn this into a mini-holiday / vacation.

I went to P.R. for the first time back in January / February 2009 and had a wonderful time staying at La Concha hotel in the Condado neighborhood.  I wrote about the trip in my blog entry, 4 Days in Puerto Rico. This trip will have us travelling a bit outside the city of San Juan to stay at the El Conquistador Resort.  Have you been to P.R. before? Where did you stay and what did you do?

365 days old

My niece, Abby, turned one this past weekend. I first wrote about her one year ago in my blog entry, Introducing Abby Dion. Proud parents and excited older brothers are huddled around tiny Abby in that picture. Now one year later she still seems quite tiny, but an emerging personality is there. She’s all smiles and looks adorable in her birthday dress as she poses for pictures on her big day.

Birthday celebration

Last night I celebrated my birthday with friends and family.  I’d like to thank everyone who came it meant a lot, and I had a fantastic time. I’ve included a collection of photos from last night.

Nana’s poetry

My grandmother, “Nana” loved to write poetry, but I never realized this until I opened an e-mail from my mother with the poem below. It is dated February 29, 1988 and was written shortly after our family had visited our grandparents who were at that point spending each winter in sunny Florida.
According to my mother, Nana was always writing poems.  It is amazing to think how much she continues to touch my heart even though she is no longer here.
Little Drummer Boy where did you go?
The tv is quiet don’t you know
You all left so quickly or so it seemed
We loved all you children to break the beam
Of quiet that’s here or so it seems
And quiet Robbie who is creating a story
And sweet dear Beth who’s doing her own thing
Susan like a record who goes round and round
Helps Tim tap with a rythmical sound.
It really was quiet on the following day
No kids to talk to and show them the way
to keep on loving us we hope and pray
As we love you all every day.

My 2009 retrospective

One of the reasons I started my blog was to record my thoughts and with the year drawing to a close I wanted to include a retrospective. This includes some of the places I’ve been fortunate enough to visit, interesting things that have happened and pictures from 2009.

Although there were no Broadway shows this year, I still managed to see all sorts of performances ranging from the funny Pam Ann who started her U.S. tour here in Boston to the beautiful performance from the Alvin Ailey Ballet. All told I believe I probably saw 6-8 plays and musicals (including a very bawdy drag show at the Sydney Opera House). Although its not quite Masterpiece Theater, here is my favorite video from YouTube in 2009.

I travelled a bit this year too. I started 2009 in a very snowy Provincetown with Dr. Sergio and his boyfriend at the time. The drive will be memorable if only because it took us 7 hours to drive through the blizzard to get there. I went back to Cape Cod three more times – Provincetown in May and July and Brewster in October for my cousin’s wedding. I also visited Ogunquit, ME staying with friends on both visits in July and October (for halloween).

I also hopped on a plane a few times in 2010 and visited three new destinations: Puerto Rico in late January, Austin, TX in October and Australia in November & December.

Changes in 2009
This year my cousin Bill passed away. His passing was relatively sudden which in hindsight was a blessing since he did not suffer much and he did live a full and happy life so even though I’ve thought of him often in recent months it has been mostly wistful memories rather than sad thoughts.

I was also sad to see my Senator, Ted Kennedy, pass this year. Many despised the man but I have nothing but admiration for him. I recall seeing him speak when he received the Gerry Studds award from Fenway Health in 2008. I miss having such a powerful voice in Washington, D.C. Truly the GLBT community was dealt a horrible blow when his voice was silenced. I think his leadership has been sorely missed in the Senate these past few months as Congress struggles to enact meaningful health reform and expand coverage.

Fortunately, this year has not been about missing those who have passed. A lot of excellent changes were welcomed into my life as well, but probably the highlight was the birth of my niece Abby Dion. She is quite adorable.

My parents built a second home up in the lakes region of New Hampshire and construction more or less finished in August. This was a dream they shared for quite some time and seeing them make this a reality is really wonderful. It also shows me that through a lot of hard work (and a bit of luck for sure) dreams no matter how large are attainable – and in this case it was a big dream. Mom & Dad’s Lake House

Other things of note
This is sort of my catch-all to comment on all sorts of things, and one thing that I need to record (although I’ve not forgotten) is that in January 2009 I celebrated my 10th anniversary with my partner. We both have strong wills, short fuses and a flair for the dramatic so if I were a casual observer waging on this relationship at the start, I’m not sure I would have bet it would have lasted beyond its first year – let alone an entire decade.

My other half had his parents join us for 3 weeks this summer and I was sorry to see them leave at the end of their stay.  I do feel a sense of guilt that my partner lives so far away from his family, but I feel this sense of separation with his parents is hardest of all so I do love having them with us and enjoy spending time in Brazil visiting.

Something else I wanted to comment upon and had previously posted is my cousin Matt’s book Lifeguard on Duty. This was his first book and it was a labor of love for sure. He is fast at work on his next project which I’m sure will be quite beautiful.

Thank you for the memories 2009… I look forward to 2010.
