Kelly Rowland wishes Boston Happy Pride

Boston PrideMs. Rowland just sent Boston a message of support and love, wishing all of us a very happy Pride here this week.  I wouldn’t want to disappoint Kelly so I plan on making the most of this week’s celebrations no matter what Mother Nature has in store for us.  I’ve lived through rainy Pride weekends before and so will you so be sure to get out and enjoy the next few days.

Ross Matthews wishes Boston Happy Pride

Boston PrideI’ve loved Ross Matthews since he first appeared on Jay Leno as a “special correspondent”.  However, today I’m more likely to see him on Chelsea Handler’s evening program on E TV, Chelsea Lately.

Regardless of where he is, he always makes me laugh so I was pretty excited to see his video wishing everyone in Boston a Happy Pride this year.

Out In Sports: Moving Forward

Jason CollinsBoston Pride will be hosting a panel discussion on LGBT people in sports tomorrow, Wednesday, June 5th from 6:15 – 8:15 p.m. at The Boston Public Library Mezzanine Conference Room.

The issue of LGBTs in organized sports has been gaining momentum and much media attention lately.  The recent announcement by NBA player Jason Collins that he is gay, pronouncements by major league sports that they will be more inclusive of the LGBT community, and the business community’s support for out and proud athletes by companies like Nike have make this issue ripe for discussion during Boston’s Pride Week.

This moderated discussion is free and open to the public but seating is limited. For more information about this program, contact the Boston Pride Human Rights & Education Committee at humanrights@bostonpride.org.

Gay men targeted even here in Boston

Nearly everyone in the gay community I know has been shocked by the string of gay bashings in New York City.  Last week Bay Windows reported Boston Police were alerting the LGBT community about an ongoing investigation of robberies involving male suspect(s) connecting with male individuals, either in person at area bars or online via hookup sites.  These stories are unsettling but familiar for gay men my age. However, I will be the first to admit I thought those days – especially in cities like Boston and New York – were far behind us.

Following up on the crimes here in Boston, local reporter – Steve Annear, contacted me about a story he was writing for Boston Magazine to get my thoughts on gay men using hookup sites to meet men. I shared my two cents and then a bit more in his article which you may read here:

Police Warn LGBT Community After People Are Drugged, Robbed

However, his interview got me to thinking about this string of violence and it has made me very mad.  The idea that people would target individuals who are trying to meet – regardless of why – is outrageous, and reminds me of the days when society would turn a blind eye to punks loitering near gay bars to beat up or rob guys leaving on their own.

While I would caution everyone to always use caution when meeting someone you don’t know, I refuse to apologize or think any less of someone for meeting via a hookup site.  I happened to meet my partner on a dance floor, but I know many guys who have made either great friends or boyfriends through hookup sites, chat rooms (before them) and any number of other odd places that many of my heterosexual friends would probably find strange to say the least. The difference between now and then is at least society is no longer turning a blind eye so if you see something speak up.  Silence has always been the enemy of the gay community.

Chad White by Justin Wu

Chad WhiteChad White’s lip syncing skills are only marginally better than Britney Spears, but the fact that he’s so darn adorable makes that quite alright with me.  Enjoy this one minute clip of Chad flirting with the camera. I think you’ll find him as adorable as I do.

This isn’t the first time I’ve posted something about Mr. White.  If you like what you see check out my posts Denim Dreams as well as the self titled post, Chad White.

Boston has no gay bars

Stefan from SNLBoston’s reputation for having a crappy nightlife if you are gay is painfully true but the real irony is the fact that since Boston Chops (a steak house) opened here in the South End, you are likely to find the bar chalk full of gay men.
