Why the “Religious Freedom” discussion is both disingenuous and dangerous

Indiana anti homosexuality billMoral Majority – Family Values – Religious Freedom

What do the above phrases have in common with each other?  They are all catch-phrases employed by Republicans looking to redefine social discourse.  In the 1970s Nixon often referred to the “Moral Majority” to appeal to white, Protestant voters since racially divisive language was no longer acceptable. Two decades later “Family Values” was often cited as a way for Christian Conservatives to deflect criticism for insisting upon the need to legislate their religious beliefs.

Religious FreedomLet’s be clear the reason every conservative is suddenly claiming the Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) doesn’t go far enough to protect “Religious Freedom” is more of this same bullshit.  Conservatives recognize that just as using racially charged language is no longer acceptable it is no longer acceptable to use homophobic slurs so they’ve modified their language to drum up outrage and portray themselves as victims.

When you hear someone talking about “religious freedom” stop and engage them immediately.  Don’t wave it off or ignore this language, because it is code for discrimination but presented in more palatable messaging. American’s believe in religious freedom just as much as individual liberties and the LGBT community must push back and ask what exactly about serving our community infringes upon their religious freedom?

Religious freedomWe know that silence creates a vacuum and in that vacuum this conservative messaging will thrive. Ask intelligent questions and start a dialog with anyone you hear talking about how their religious freedoms are being infringed. There is a similar parallel to the lack of substance behind the anti-marriage equality argument – but absent your dialog – Americans will come to accept and believe religious rights are being compromised and need to be protected; at the expense of your rights.

Happy Easter

Easter BunnyEaster is one of those holidays that has little meaning anymore.  I consider myself a “cultural Catholic”, meaning while religion has no place in my life now it did at one point and the memories from that time still influence who I am today.

When I was younger the holiday took on significant meaning, but now I think of it as the start of spring and an opportunity to spend time with family.

Regardless of what Easter means to you.  I hope you have a nice Sunday.

Mrs. Betty Bowers explains Indiana’s “Religious Freedom” legislation

Christian persecution,As the brouhaha over Indiana’s “religious freedom” legislation grows and Governor Mike Pence continues to fail to respond to questions on how this isn’t legalizing discrimination,  Mrs. Betty Bowers “America’s Best Christian” steps in to stand up for all those persecuted Christians who are forced to abide homosexuals entering their stores and <gasp> treat them the same way they would treat heathens like Jews, Muslims, agnostics and even non-believers.

Weekly religious service attendance by state

Gallup recently released survey results that show slightly more than half (51%) of Utah residents say they attend religious services every week, more than any other state. At the other end of the spectrum is Vermont, where fewer than 1 in 5 (17%) of residents say they attend religious services every week.

Overall the South averaged the highest percentage of people who said they attended religious services every week and the Northeast had the lowest percentage.  You can read the full findings on Gallup’s site here.

Happy Hanukkah

Eliad CohenToday marks the start of the Jewish holiday, Hanukkah, an 8-day observance that remembers the Jewish people’s struggle for religious freedom.  Eliad Cohen and I wanted to acknowledge the holiday for those who celebrates it.  We hope you can spend the time with friends and family and wish you much peace and happiness.

The miraculous Saint Anthony

Catholic PriestI’m not a particularly religious individual nor am I superstitious, but I was raised Roman Catholic and there are some traditions from my childhood that have stuck.  Catholics are taught to pray to different patron saints and while I rarely pray – whenever I lose something I still immediately turn to Saint Anthony.

Despite the irrationality of praying to a saint from the 1200s, it is hard for me to think of an instance where Saint Anthony hasn’t come through so why wouldn’t I keep praying?

St. Anthony, St. Anthony please look around.

I’ve lost my <Insert Object> and it needs to be found.

Which is why I’m writing this post, because I promised Saint Anthony I would, and since I know I’ll be in need of his services in the future, no matter how crazy it sounds, I don’t want to wreck what has been an amazingly helpful relationship for 40+ years.

St. Anthony resolves the mystery of BosGuy’s missing keys

On Tuesday, September 16th I flew to Texas for a business trip and unbeknownst to me, I lost my keys when I went through security. I didn’t realize this until the following Monday, after which I proceeded to search all the nooks and crannies of my travel bag, pants pockets, jackets, and even our car.  By Tuesday I was feeling pretty down and decided to give “Tony” — that’s how I affectionately refer to Saint Anthony — a call by reciting my prayer over and over. The next morning when I woke up I recalled that going through security in Logan Airport had resulted in some of my contents getting jostled so I called TSA Logan Airport Lost and Found and I spoke to Officer Tony. In less than a few minutes Officer Tony told me he had keys matching my description and I could come by to pick them up at my convenience.  Thank you St. Anthony.

Tweet of the day: Gay marriage

marriage equalityI’d like to start with the Republican Leadership. I doubt any of them would last a week.

Sochi OlympicsI’m surprised that The Westboro Baptist Church isn’t actually attending the Sochi Olympics or at a minimum visiting Russia which seems equally fixated on homosexuality.  Maybe FOX News could arrange a one way flight for the church and their ‘flock’.

Gun Control and ReligionI’m no expert on religion, but this does seem more in line with the teachings of Christ. What an inconvenient truth for so many Americans.

Boston ranks low on “most bible-minded” list and I’m okay with that

religionThe The American Bible S0ciety defines “Bible-mindedness” as a combination of how often one reads the Bible and how accurate they think the Bible is. “Respondents who report reading the bible within the past seven days and who agree strongly in the accuracy of the Bible are classified as ‘Bible Minded,’” says the study’s methodology.

Spencer Trappist Ale

Spencer Trappist AleWhen people think of local brewers, Sam Adams most likely comes to mind although the region does have an excellent collection of  brewers that deserve attention.  Last weekend NPR reported that there is one more brewery out in Western MA that may be worth checking out if only for the novelty. Spencer Trappist Ale has started selling their ale in Massachusetts this week, although I’ve not been able to identify where. UPDATE: In Boston, you can get this at Social Wines in Southie.

I associate the Trappist monks in Western MA with making delicious preserves so I’m intrigued. Apparently St. Joseph’s Abbey is only one out of ten Trappist abbeys worldwide to make ale and the only one outside of Europe.  More about this story can be read here.

He actually said that: Justice Antonin Scalia

Scalia discusses the devil

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is often characterized as an intellectual giant, but as you may expect, I disagree. Justice Scalia has made a career out of saying the outrageous and then hiding behind his claims that his faith as a practicing Roman Catholic shapes his views.  So when New York Magazine’s interview of Justice Scalia from this past September was printed last week nobody made a big deal about his cuckoo comments suggesting that the Devil is getting “wilier” (his words) at hiding from us and why he’s not seen as often.

This ‘intellectual giant’ of the Conservative movement sounds terribly similar to Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Ted Cruz and others.

You may read the full interview from NY Magazine, here.
