This week I will be in Las Vegas for work so I will be slow to approve comments, I may miss a post or two and I’ll definitely be less visible on social media.
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. My job has me in all day training classes, and it’ll be a struggle just to get the work from my day job done while I’m out of the office.

This weekend Castle Island Brewery takes over part of the urban park, Underground at Ink, and turns it into an outdoor beer garden. Saturday night Jackie Beat comes to Club Cafe and a new gay night called SILVER comes to Peggy O’Neil’s. Lastly, on Sunday visit the SoWa Open Market or head over to Trophy Room for Bear Brunch, which starts at 1PM.

Last September the South End welcomed Anoush’ella; a family owned and operated Eastern Mediterranean restaurant that serves Armenian and Lebanese cuisine. The casual dining restaurant is a welcome change to the $30+ a plate restaurants that dominate the South End and as you can see from above the space is well designed and very comfortable.
Most of the menu focuses on flatbreads, wraps and bowls, which you order at the counter (everyone is very patient and is happy to explain the menu). Once you’ve ordered find a seat at the bar, communal table or individual tables in the back.
ShakShuka ($9.75) and Walnut Harissa ($3.50)
While the restaurant is very popular for lunch and dinner and has a brisk take out business, I have have started visiting Anoush’ella for breakfast on Saturday mornings. With the average price point for breakfast, lunch and dinner ~$15, you can afford to visit repeatedly if you like.
Above is what has become my “go to” breakfast: Shakshuka which is diced tomatoes, onion, olives and red pepper with za’atar (a blend of oregano, basil & thyme), cumin, coriander, paprika, garlic cloves, topped with cilantro, two poached eggs and labne (Greek yogurt). I also get a side of the Walnut Harrissa which is made with red peppers and adds a bit of heat. The pita bread is made fresh to order, and I use it to scoop the food. They also have sweeter options for those who may prefer something a tad less savory including: Nutella chocolate with strawberry, banana, cinnamon, honey and granola as well as some more traditional Armenian options like Kenefe, which is made with crushed filo dough and cheese wrapped with sesame seeds and served with orange blossom syrup.
Anoush’ella is open seven days a week. Monday through Friday 11AM – 9:30PM and Saturday and Sunday 10AM – 9:30PM and serves beer and wine.

Provincetown’s Boatslip is hosting their first Tea Dance of 2018 today. As the weather continues to warm up, these parties will get bigger and bigger. Below are a few photos from these famous parties taken by yours truly over the years.
This weekend I’d like to encourage people to come over to my neighborhood to check out SoWa First Fridays (this is a great date night option), SoWa Art Walk (Saturday & Sunday) and definitely check out the first SoWa Open Market of 2018 on Sunday, which this year will have the “SoWa Beer Barn”.
In addition to these events happening in SoWa, north of Boston is the 10th Mass Poetry Festival in Salem, and Boston’s taco festival runs all day on Saturday in Government Center. Cap off the weekend by attending either Verna Turbulence’s Drag Brunch at Club Cafe, which raises money for the Boston Living Center in Boston or head over to Trophy Room for their DADT Boi Butter Brunch.
10th Mass Poetry Festival runs Friday through Sunday this weekend in Salem Ma with many events free and open to the public – in Salem

Sam Tanabe plays Sammy Kimura in SpeakEasy Stage Company’s production of ALLEGIANCE
On Friday, May 4th The SpeakEasy Stage Company will open with their fifth and final production of their 2017 / 2018 season, ALLEGIANCE.
Inspired by the true childhood experience of TV/film actor and social media icon George Takei (Mr. Sulu on Star Trek), ALLEGIANCE tells the story of the Kimura family, whose lives are upended when they and 120,000 other Japanese-Americans were forced to leave their homes following the events at Pearl Harbor.
This show is an uplifting testament to the power of the human spirit. It follows the Kimura family as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves. This weekend celebrate and explore Boston’s most vibrant arts community at the Annual SoWa Art Walk. Make the most of this two-day event on your own, with friends or even as a date – it’s free to peruse and makes for a great opportunity to see Boston’s creative economy up close. Perhaps the best date option is perusing studios and galleries this Friday as part of “First Fridays” where each month artist studios and galleries welcome people from 5 – 9PM.
I’d also like to give my friend and Boston-area artist, Evan Rosenberg a shout out and encourage you to stop by and visit his debut showing from his current series, Therapy, which will be at Abigail Ogilvy Gallery’s 450 Harrison Ave showroom on the 3rd floor in studio #307A.
Did you know the SoWa Art & Design District has more than 300 working artists studios, and is the largest concentration of contemporary art galleries in the city? Plan on coming out either Friday evening for First Fridays or for the SoWa Art Walk on Saturday and Sunday.
