Architectural Digest says the South End is one of the coolest neighborhoods in America

Architectural Digest looked at living, dining, and entertainment expenses in some of America’s most trendy neighborhoods. To nobody’s surprise, Boston’s South End neighborhood was ranked as one of the most expensive in the country. Below, I’ve included a list of the ten most expensive “cool” neighborhoods to go out, according to the article. I suppose what surprised me the most was seeing the West Loop (Chicago) coming in as the third most expensive.

According to Amanda Lutz, the Architectural Digest journalist who wrote the article, “We assumed the resident would be attending an entertainment venue once a week, an art venue once a week, dining out and buying coffee five times a week, and enjoying a cocktail twice per week.”

If you’d like to read more about how they identified these neighborhoods, what Architectural Digest had to say about the South End, and where they went to come up with their weekly “cool” budget, check out the article which ran earlier this week in Boston.com.

Saturday morning coffee

Much thanks to Mike from NY who shared this photo. He never answered my question if he is one of these two men — maybe if Mike sees the post he can let us all know in the comments section.

However, his photo is too racy for my pg-13 blog, so if you want to see the unedited version, email me at bosguymail@gmail.com and I’ll send it your way.

riddle, exercise for your brain

Each Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together. Leave your guess in the comment section.

This week’s riddle: A priceless 6′ mirror with a silver frame is stolen from a haunted house. The top three suspects are a werewolf, a vampire, and a witch. Who stole the mirror? Explain.

I’ll approve responses later in the day to allow people to respond without seeing any spoilers.

Vintage gay

With summer now a not-so-distant memory, photos like this can be quite taunting to those of us living in Boston. The leaves here are starting to change and the days are much shorter. However, I appreciate the cheek of these three posing together. Care to take a guess when this may have been taken? Leave your best guess as a comment for all to read.

Head of the Charles Regatta is this weekend

HOCR

The Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is a Boston area tradition that dates back to 1965 and has evolved into a massive, multiple-day, international rowing competition that draws approximately 11,000 athletes and 400,000 spectators, making it the largest rowing event in the world.

HEAD OF THE CHARLES REGATTA OCT. 20-22, 2023

This year’s regatta takes place this Saturday and Sunday and is definitely worth checking out. Head down to the Charles River to cheer on these amazing athletes and enjoy all the activity around the regatta. Both sides of the Charles River will gather large crowds but the Cambridge side nearest Harvard tends to be the most crowded and fun place to both watch and partake in all the activities.

The organizers have created a great website that includes more information about the races, maps, and FAQs. You can learn more by visiting the official HOCR website, www.hocr.org.

Caption this photo

Please share a caption of your own for this week’s photograph. Hopefully, the caption I’ve shared below will inspire you to leave a funny caption in the comment section. If you don’t see it immediately don’t worry, I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.

What you doing later?

Halloween horror movie night at Club Cafe

Next Monday, October 23rd, Club Cafe will help get you in the mood for Halloween when they screen the Stephen King classic, The Shining. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson, this movie will help you get your scare on. Doors open at 6 PM and the movie starts at 7 PM.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

New England foliage

One hundred years ago this poem by Robert Frost was first published in the Yale Review. A year later it would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1924.

Nothing Gold Can Stay is one of my favorite poems from Robert Frost because I love how accessible it is – even for those who “don’t get poetry”. Inspired by the fall foliage of New England, Frost’s words weave a visual that is easy to follow. The underlying meaning of this poem also reminds me to make the most of each day and to try and take nothing for granted.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I hope you enjoy this poem as much as I do.

Local activist looks to create LGBTQ art and history museum in Boston

More than a decade ago Jean Dolin emigrated from Haiti to Boston (and aren’t we lucky he chose to make this city his new home). But I first heard about Jean in connection with his then-forthcoming exhibit “Portraits of Pride”, a collaboration with John Huet that featured 8-foot portraits on the Boston Common of 20+ local LGBTQ leaders.

A couple of weeks ago, Dolin once again got my attention when he announced he would begin work to create the state’s first LGBTQ art and history museum. Considering how many state governments have recently targeted the LGBTQ+ community makes such an endeavor extremely timely.

This state’s LGBTQ community has made its presence known for a long time and there is ample material for such a museum. Kudos to Dolin and his vision to create the state’s first LGBTQ museum here in Boston. I’m excited to learn more and hope his dream can become reality soon enough.

Scruffy Sunday

It has been far too long since I’ve featured the very handsome Alexander “Lex” Abramov on this blog. He recently started posting on Instagram again and a different photo from the shoot shared above can be viewed on his Instagram, here.
