It is red wine drinking season: California Dreaming

California red wine, California CabernetNow that fall weather is here I’ve stopped drinking my much loved rosé wines, which I think of as a summer wine. The cooler temperatures here in Boston make me crave big, bold California red wines and while I’m a firm believer that one can get very good bottles of California red wines for less than $20, I splurged with these purchases, that I plan on enjoying over the coming weeks days.

2014 Chappellet Proprietor’s Blend ($30) is made from traditional Bordeaux varietals. The Chappellet Mountain Cuvee Proprietor’s Blend has a great reputation, and I very much enjoy drinking it with or without food.

2012 Hall Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($50) is a wine that I first tried at Boston Chops. It has a dark ruby red color and has a long finish that makes this particularly good with food or soft, creamy cheeses (South End Formaggio can steer you in the right direction if you need help).

2013 Ramey Claret Napa Valley ($42) Like the Chappellet, this is a blend of Bordeaux varietals and has a soft easy finish that makes this delicious on its own or accompanied by food.

2014 The Prisoner ($45) is a bottle I first purchased at Brix Wine Shop because the label caught my eye. This is a bolder wine and I love the taste of the tannins, which I think are fairly common in the bigger California red wines that I like. This is a popular bottle on many Boston restaurant wine lists right now.

Share what you are drinking by leaving a comment on this blog post for me and my readers. I’m always looking for an excuse to try a new wine.

*The prices above are what I paid at the NH State Liquor Store.

Haunted Houses in New England

Halloween, Haunted Houses

Source: Halloween New England

Tis the season to scare the crap out of oneself. While I’m no expert on haunted houses, I’ve done some digging and identified a handful of places you may want to visit. Be sure to also check out www.halloweennewengland.com, which has an extensive listing of haunted houses throughout all of New England.

Barrett’s Haunted Mansion is south of Boston in Abbington, MA. Oct 18 and Nov 4 & 5th  they will host their special Darkness Unleashed, which requires advance ticket purchase.  On Sundays and Thursdays they have a deal for $35 that includes dinner at the Ale House and admission to the Haunted Mansion/Maze. More details can be found on their website, BHMansion.com.

Factory of Terror has three locations in Worcester, West Warwick, RI and Fall River. More details about individual locations, tickets and hours can be found on their website, factoryofterror.com.

Spooky World may be the largest of the haunted houses in the area. This year Spooky World presents “Nightmare in New England”. Based on feedback I read online, it seems like you will want to purchase either their VIP or Super VIP tickets, but these come at a hefty price, starting at $65 on Friday and Saturday nights. For more information visit their website, Spookyworld.com.

For a more complete listing of haunted houses, hayrides, mazes and tours throughout all of New England check out the very thorough website, halloweennewengland.com.

2017 Red Hot calendar

Thomas KnightsThomas Knights began his career as a music producer and performer, but these days you are more likely to recognize his solo exhibition, Red Hot, which is an ongoing project to rebrand the ginger male stereotype. The success of the work has resulted in raising funds to end bullying, exhibits in London, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York and Sydney and now his 2017 calendar.

Sound interesting? You can check out Thomas Knights images from the 2017 calendar (note that it is most definitely not work-friendly). Like what you see? You can get yourself a copy of the calendar here.

Photos from this collection offer a glimpse into a group of gay men living their lives in New York, Provincetown, and — Robert recently discovered — Andover, Massachusetts.

This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited! RSVPs are required, via Eventbrite.

Previous Vintage Gay Photos

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share for a future post? Ryan Landry’s Murder on the Polar Express

Boston fringe theater, Ryan LandryRyan Landry and his Gold Dust Orphans have announced that this year’s holiday theater spectacular will be Murder on the Polar Express.

Stealing plot lines from every Agatha Christie mystery ever written, the musical features “The World’s Foremost Drag Detective” Shirley Holmes, (played by Ryan Landry) as she boards the world’s most elegant train along with her sidekick Dr. Jody Watley and ten other unsavory characters, all en route to the North Pole for a much needed Christmas vacation!  Imagine their dismay when they realize there is a psycho killer onboard.

The Gold Dust Orphan’s holiday musical always sells out quickly so I’m giving the show a plug now that tickets are available to encourage you to make plans and reserve your tickets ahead of time. Murder on the Polar Express runs from Thursday, December 1 – Wednesday, December 21.

How you feelin’ about tonight’s VP debate?
