Provincetown’s Bear Week starts Saturday, July 8th

The week starts off with a bang with 4th of July celebrations here in Boston and the Circuit in full swing in Provincetown for Independence Week but starting next weekend Bear Week kicks off ensuring that there will be no shortage of pre-Bear Week parties here in Boston and plenty to keep you busy through Sunday.

Boston’s biggest show, Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is Tuesday, July 4th

MONDAY – WEDNESDAY

Boston Pops concert (no fireworks) on Monday is basically the dry run for the performance on the 4th; gates open at 5PM and concert starts at 8PM in Boston

San Francisco ranked 10th in Nestpick’s 100 best gay cities in the world

On the 48th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, Nestpick, a Berlin-based online housing platform, has issued a list of the 100 best LGBT cities in the world. For a city to rank strongly they focused on the following criteria: LGBT dating scene, nightlife, open minded citizens, and low levels of hate crime.  They also looked at national laws that impact lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, such as the right to get married or adopt children.

Based on Nestpick’s findings the top five cities are: Madrid, Amsterdam, Toronto, Tel Aviv and London. New York City (9th) and San Francisco (10th) are the highest rated US cities. Below is the full list of US cities that made the cut.

American cities that didn’t make this list, that surprised me are:  Atlanta, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. but that is largely based on nightlife and maybe the other metrics used made them drop off the list.

“It’s no coincidence that the world’s most exciting cities have a strong LGBT community, contributing much to the dynamism, openness and prosperity which defines locations such as Madrid, Amsterdam and Berlin”, Ömer Kücükdere, Managing Director of Nestpick.

Tea Dance at The Boatslip is crazy busy for 4th of July Week

It is a busy weekend with pre-4th of July celebrations taking place everywhere you look so there is no excuse to stay at home.

In addition to all the events happening in Boston, the Circuit hits Provincetown, starting today adding even more options to the mix and Ogunquit has parties every night with two performances from Hedda Lettuce at Mainestreet, but don’t worry, you won’t be heading out of town, Kiki Beach is back again this Saturday and UnderBear and Saga are just a few of the many options available to you.

Just ahead of New York City Pride, which took place this past weekend, The New York Times published, Scott James article, “There Goes The Gayborhood” and shared it in the Pride 2017 section of the Sunday Times.

News that neighborhoods like Greenwich Village and The Castro are no longer quite as gay as they once were isn’t news (not for gay men anyway), but I couldn’t help but read the article to hear what Scott James had to say on the matter. James writes, “These changes are due in large part to the increased expense that comes with the rising popularity and gentrification of many inner cities. But growing acceptance, legally and societally, of the L.G.B.T.Q. community is also responsible.”

Many of these ‘gayborhoods’ like Boston’s South End were neglected urban areas that had rapidly depopulated from “White Flight” and faced more than their share of economic hardships. The LGBTQ community in the 1960s, 70s and 80s claimed these spaces because much like these parts of the city, homosexuals were perceived as dangerous and undesirable. The irony is that as gayborhoods these communities flourished and in most major cities these former enclaves for the LGBTQ community are now so gentrified they have become a hollow shell of their former self.

None of this is news to the gay community and the underlying economic forces that are driving this trend aren’t going away. However James writes that efforts are also underway to provide a small oasis of LGBTQ pride to neighborhoods that in the past may not have been as well known for their tolerance of gay men; as the LGBTQ community move to other parts of the city. The fact that Dorchester now has gay bars would have been inconceivable in the 80s and 90s, but now, Savin Hill, probably has more gay men moving to it than the traditional gay enclave (the South End) in Boston. What does this mean for our gay community? Time will tell.

The Circuit hits Provincetown this week for 4th of July – Parties start on Thursday

It is a busy week so there is no excuse to stay at home. Below are 50 different events ranging from free movies you can see outside to free workouts.

This week there are nearly 50 different events and programs happening in Boston, Provincetown, Ogunquit and Providence.  A few highlights include: Opus Affair’s monthly cocktail social, the Provincetown Portuguese Festival, the 4th Annual Donna Summer Roller Disco Party, the 4th annual JerkFest & Rum Tasting as well as the DotOUT Summer Tea Dance at dbar.

There is a lot happening in the area, including Rhode Island Pride which takes place in Providence this weekend. To see their full calendar of events check out, prideri.com. In addition to Pride in the Ocean State, there is plenty happening including Kiki Beach, a Boyfriends tribute to Madonna, followed by a Beyoncé brunch and the return of Sleaze at The Alley just to name just a few events.
