Dining in Grand Cayman

dining in Caribbean, Grand Cayman

Calypso Grill’s deck in Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman has no shortage of great dining options and I would encourage anyone visiting to leave their hotel and do some exploring.  Trip Advisor does a nice job of listing a wide selection of dining options.  One of our more extravagant meals on the island was at Calypso Grill.  If you decide to go, request a table outside overlooking the water. For this New Englander, dining outside by the water in February is a rare treat and added to my dining experience.

Grand Cayman dining

Bread and Chocolate French Toast

As much as I enjoyed Calypso and some of the other places, it was two of the more casual dining establishments that Sergio and I enjoyed the most.  Neither of these places are by the water so if that is a must then simply bypass these options.  For visitors coming by cruise ship the first option is within walking distance of where you will disembark and is called Bread and Chocolate.  This tiny, hole-in-the-wall restaurant serves delicious (vegan) food and is a favorite among locals. I had no idea eating vegan was so delicious.

Casual dining at Cimboco in Grand Cayman

The other restaurant I wanted to give a shout out to is Cimboco.  It is located just a few minutes by car from The Westin and Ritz Carlton in a small strip mall that also has a burger shack, smoothie store and coffee shop.  Cimboco hosts a $5.00 breakfast Monday thru Friday from 7:30 – 11:00 am that is tough to beat. Additionally, they make delicious sandwiches and pizzas (I’d recommend trying the eggplant pesto pizza) all very affordable.

While there were many more options, I thought I’d limit this post to three of my favorites: Calypso GrillBread and Chocolate and Cimboco. For more dining tips check out Trip Advisor rankings or contact me, and I’d be happy to share a few more suggestions suitable to your taste, price range and near where you will be staying.

Gay travel in Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman Islands Gay travelers have good reason to be wary of the Caribbean Islands.  While some islands are more tolerant than others, most are influenced by conservative Christian churches and many have a terrible track record with regards to LGBT rights.  Affluent, gay North American and European travelers aren’t subjected to the same overt discrimination that residents are but it might be smart to read, Global Gay Boyz post for LGBT travelers if you have never traveled to the Caribbean before.

Despite its wealth, The Cayman Islands remains a conservative society and while they are more tolerant than most Caribbean nations, overt forms of PDA are not wise. There isn’t any gay life to speak of in the traditional sense of a defined neighborhood or designated gay bars.  However, O Bar near Seven Mile Beach is a popular hang out where gay locals and travelers will frequent.  For more details visit O Bar’s Faceebook page.

While there is no gay beach, some will meet by the Royal Palms (restaurant and bar) or Calico Jack’s along Seven Mile Beach.  According to locals, Royal Palms “Industry Night” hosted each Wednesday, as well as Friday night and Sunday during the day are when Royal Palms will be busiest.  Calico Jack’s best night is Saturdays.

Regardless of where you go, it is easy to have  great time in Grand Cayman. There are many places to visit, dine and relax.  Should you be planning a trip and have questions, feel free to reach out to me by leaving a comment below or email me.

Grand Cayman Island

CaribbeanThe Cayman Islands are a tiny collection of three islands nestled in the Western Caribbean nearest Jamaica and Cuba.  The largest island, Grand Cayman, is 20+ mile long.  Grand Cayman is unlike most other Caribbean islands in that  off shore banking is actually the largest industry – not tourism. This means that you will find an affluent population of professional ex-pats (mostly Canadian) living there.

BosGuy and his coconuts

We visited two friends who are now Caymanians (yes that is what they are called); one originally from Trinidad & Tobago and the other from Scotland by way of Canada. While staying at our friend’s beautiful home we were able to really see the island through the eyes of locals.

I’ll write more about Grand Cayman this week including:

  • What to do if you arrive by cruise ship
  • Places of interest
  • Where to dine

Please share your experiences if you’ve visited before.  If you are contemplating a visit to Grand Cayman and have questions reach out to me by leaving a comment here on my blog or emailing me directly.

Caribbean dreaming on Grand Cayman

Sergio, Travel, Gay TravelSergio and I returned from spending a week in the Caribbean where we visited friends who live on Grand Cayman.  The trip was just what we needed.  We spent time exploring the island, meeting people and soaking up some much needed warmth and sun before returning to Boston.

I enjoyed our time there and will be sharing posts later this week about our experience, including travel tips should you decide to visit this tiny island.  If you have any questions about visiting the Cayman Islands, feel free to reach out to me by leaving a comment in this post or emailing me directly.

Caribbean state of mind

Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman Island

Later today Sergio and I leave the frozen tundra Boston to visit a friend who lives on Grand Cayman Island.  We’ve never been to this tiny Caribbean island and we are excited not only to see Steve but to also visit someplace new.

Blogging may slow down a bit while we are away so apologies in advance for anyone who may be waiting on a comment to be approved or if I don’t follow up as quickly as I normally do through the other channels that I push my content.

I promise to take many pictures and will have plenty to share upon my return.

Stay Warm

Hotel review: Westin Market Street in San Francisco

San FranciscoEarlier this month work brought me out to California. Rather than flying home right away, I decided to cash in some loyalty points and stay at the Westin Market Street in San Francisco’s SOMA district for a night so I could visit a friend I’ve known since grade school who now lives in North Beach.

When given the choice, I like to stay in SOMA.  The neighborhood is convenient to touristy destinations like the waterfront and Union Square as well as the financial district and plenty of gay bars (one needn’t only spend time in The Castro).  travel, starwood property, SFThe Westin San Francisco is situated between Mission and Market Street.  The property was clean and well managed, and I would return to without hesitation. My 24th floor hotel room offered me a lovely view of Union Square which is about four blocks away.  The property backs up to the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Four Seasons and a very popular Equinox gym.  Additionally, a pedestrian walkway called Yerba Buena Lane has a half dozen upscale bars and restaurants all within a 2-3 minute walk.

If you are contemplating a visit to SF or have a pending trip planned, this may be a great property for you to consider booking.  The hotel is large and steps from the Moscone and just a few blocks from the financial district.

El Al airlines starts flying to Boston in 2015

Travel, air travel, BostonFive months from today El Al airlines will start flying non-stop from Boston to Israel. Unfortunately that won’t be in time for anyone attending Tel Aviv Pride, but I’m happy to see another international carrier coming to Boston’s Logan Airport.

El Al airlines joins a growing list of international carriers that have been wooed by Boston’s demographics and our former Governor, Deval Patrick, to start flying to Boston.   New international carriers who in recent years have started flying from Boston include: Copa Airlines (Panama Carrier), SATA Airlines (Azores), Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Hainan Airlines (China) just to name a few.

Do you have plans to travel internationally in 2015? If so, do tell – where?

The Cayman Islands on my mind

Grand Cayman IslandRegular readers will recall that in the fall I encouraged you to book a trip to a warm destination (if you could) in late January or February to break up the winter.  Maybe it will make you feel good to know that I follow my own advice; two weeks from today, we fly to The Cayman Islands to visit my friend, Steve.

Steve is near and dear to my heart because if it weren’t for my blog, we may have never met.  Back in the day Steve also wrote a blog and that is how we met.  A chance visit to Boston  to see a concert gave us the chance to meet in person and we hit it off.  Steve’s the kind of guy who melts your heart the minute you meet because he is handsome and thoughtful.  Although I’ve known him for a few years, until now I’ve not had a chance to visit him so I’m really looking forward to seeing where he lives, meeting his friends and visiting someplace new.

Have you ever been to the Cayman Islands?  Tell me all about your experiences.

Where in the world would you travel

gay travel,If money and time was not an issue, what one destination would you put on your “Must See” list for 2015?  I often write about traveling but only get away from New England one or two times a year for pleasure.

There are so many places I would like to see that it would be tough to limit my answer to just one location.  However, I’ve always wanted to visit Cape Town South Africa and I do regret not having visited New Zealand when Sergio and I went to Australia back in 2009 so those two destinations would rank high on my “Must See”.  Where would you like to visit if you could go anywhere in the world and why?

Outta here

travelA surprise business trip means that I will be flying out to California for work for the next few days and may be slow to respond.

Despite the fact that I’ll be inside conference rooms all day long, I’m still happy to get away from the cold that has gripped Boston if even for just a few days.

Thank you for your patience if I’m slow to approve any comments, post on Facebook & Twitter or respond to email.

Time to travel abroad

Eat Well Travel OftenPerhaps you have not noticed but the US Dollar is surging against most world currencies, making it more affordable for Americans to travel abroad.   However, the favorable exchange rate has no impact if you travel within the United States.

A good example of this savings is comparing my recent trip to Brazil.  Everything cost approximately 35% less than it did when we traveled to Brazil a year earlier due to the strength of the dollar.

Book Your Travel Abroad Now!

If you are unsure where you might like to go, I would suggest you check out Google Flights.  In early December I wrote about Google Flights website because it shows travelers the prices of multiple destinations near and far from one web page.  If you can find a deal to Europe, Caribbean, South America or elsewhere consider taking advantage of the strong US dollar.

Unsure of where you might like to travel? There are plenty of great travel sites; some that focus on LGBT travel. Book air travel for later this year and you can probably secure an affordable airfare.  And most importantly, keep me posted on your travels. I’m always interested in checking out new places to visit.Ipanema

Shopping tips when visiting Sao Paulo

Shopping Brazil, Brazilian retailers, Sao Paulo shoppingFor the past few years the American dollar has been laughably weak as compared to other currencies, making shopping less enjoyable when we travel abroad.  However, the US economy has been on a tear lately and the dollar is significantly stronger than it was a year ago when we were in Brazil.

As a result, Sergio and I opted for some retail therapy when we visited Sao Paulo. I’d strongly encourage anyone visiting Sao Paulo to bypass foreign ateliers where prices are 100% – 300% more expensive due to the country’s idiotic tariffs and fixate on Brazilian retailers where you can purchase items friends back in the US will not have access to.

While Sao Paulo has many shopping malls (‘the gays’ are partial to Shopping Frei Center and Shopping Higienopolis), but I’d recommend you bypass them and head directly for Rua Oscar Freire.  The street is full of retailers you will be unaccustomed to seeing, selling everything from bathing suits to tuxedos.  If you get hungry each block has one or two places you can duck into for a quick bite.

A few tips if you go shopping in Brazil:

1) Customer service is taken very seriously.  Be prepared to have someone approach you and to bring you multiple items they think you may want to see or try on.

2) Sizes are different and more in line with European designers so don’t enter a store with the mindset that you are a medium or a particular waist size.  Clothes in Brazil are much smaller than in the US.

3) If you are serious about making purchases and are buying more than 2-3 items ask them if there is a possible discount they can provide.  You are more likely to get a “yes” if you have a Brazilian ask the question.  We were able to get 10% off our purchases at one retailer.

4) Avoid purchasing anything from the US or Europe,  You will pay significantly more than in the US.  Focus your shopping on local designers and chains.

5) The most important phrase of all to learn when shopping, “Quanto Gosto?”, which is acceptable for asking “how much”, although I don’t believe that is the literal translation.  It is also good form to know how to say thank you (although this is a phrase you will hopefully use elsewhere as well) “Obrigado”.

Spot (the gays in Sao Paulo)

Dining Sao PauloAlthough on our most recent visit we didn’t have a chance to go to Spot, I thought I should write about this restaurant and bar since it is a favorite.  You will find more than a few handsome men at this gay friendly restaurant conveniently located just a block off of Paulista Avenue near MASP.

The first time I visited Spot was probably ten years ago.  We arrived at 11PM on a Friday night and asked for a table for four.  The handsome host smiled and said the wait was 2 hours, but encouraged us to order drinks from the bar and enjoy the outdoor patio while we waited.  We didn’t take him seriously until he came to seat us for dinner at 1 AM (at which point there was only a 30 minute wait).

Dining in Sao PauloWhile the food is good it is the people watching that makes this a great place to either nab a cocktail or have dinner with friends.  Main dishes at Spot run from $30 – $50 Reis (with the current US exchange rate of 2.5 that equates to $15-$20).
