Opus Affair

Looking for something fun to do tomorrow night?  Opus Affair is hosting January’s monthly get together at the very cool West Bridge in Kendall Square.

Where: West Bridge, 1 Kendall Square, Cambridge
Opus Affair is comprised primarily (but not exclusively) of young professionals and artists from the area who meet up each month to socialize.  Keeping with the group’s interest in supporting the local arts community, there is also a charitable drinking game (a.k.a the Punch Bowl Fund) where you may contribute $5 (cash only). In exchange for your contribution, you receive a drink ticket good for a glass of punch and a ballot to vote for one of the three featured arts groups. The organization with the most votes that night gets the money.

This month the Punch Bowl fund will be featuring:
The Fenway Alliance
Collective Creature (a Yes.Oui.Si. project)
MetroWest Opera

Head to the ICA Boston

ICA Boston The ICA Boston is free each Thursday from 5 – 9pm.

The ICA which stands for Institute of Contemporary Art is a fantastic local museum that is in the Seaport District.

No matter how much money you spent last month and no matter how steep your credit card statement, the ICA Boston has made it easy for you to plan a fun evening out for a date or with friends.

Every Thursday from 5-9PM The ICA Boston is Free 

If you have not been to the museum recently, note they have a fantastic exhibit called This will have been: Art, Love and Politics in the 1980s.

Diego Fazio photorealism

I stumbled upon this amazing drawing (you read that correctly) on BuzzFeed.  Diego Fazio is a 22 year old self-taught artist living in Italy who began his career designing tattoos.  He has perfected his photorealism technique over a period of several years to make his drawings appear as photographs.  I would love to see an exhibit of his work here in Boston.

There are a few more of his works here, but note the site is in Italian.

Boston artist Maxine Blomberg

Maxine Blomberg

Maxine Blomberg is an artist living in Boston who I became friendly with a few years ago when she started working at the neighborhood cafe, Green Light.

Each week at the Green Light Cafe Maxine creates new chalk art on a chalk board by the register.  I really like her unique style and each week look forward to seeing her illustrations at the cafe.  Her employer, The Aquitaine Group, recognized her talent as well and has encouraged her artistic illustrations.  They asked her to create a replication of the Trevi Fountain all in chalk for their new restaurant, Cinquecento, a Roman-inspired trattoria.   You can check out the chalk art, which is on display at the trendy new South End restaurant, or you may visit Green Light Cafe to see her weekly creations.  Under the Cinquecento chalk drawing I have included a video my other half created that includes nearly all of her 2012 chalk board images from The Green Light Cafe.  Maxine’s first love is working with sculpture and headdresses which you can see some of on her website, enixvw.wordpress.com.

Os Gemos mural in Boston

Year in rewind: BosGuy’s favorite posts from 2012

This year Boston’s museum, Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), invited two Brazilian street artists to Boston to feature their work  in their first showing in the US. They also commissioned this public art installation in downtown near my office. This was originally posted in September 2012.

boston public artMy enthusiasm for public art and funding these initiatives is not always shared, but I think commissioning public art installations is essential to any city and community.  So I was thrilled to see the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA-Boston) have two famous street artists from Brazil create larger than life murals in the city of Boston.

boston public artOs Gemos – identical twin brothers and street artists from Brazil – are currently hosting their first museum show in the United States at the ICA-Boston. While the show is here in Boston this large temporary mural will dominate Dewey Square in Boston’s financial district.

ICA Boston: This will have been

AIDSIt is that time of year when I curtail my time spent outside and look for indoor entertainment, because it’s just too cold in Boston. One distraction I’m very much looking forward to is the Institute of Contemporary Art exhibit, This will have been: Art, Love, and Politics in the 1980s,which runs through March 3, 2013.

According to Boston Globe writer, Sebastian Smee, the exhibit is “An ambitious historical overview of the main currents of art-making in the 1980s.”  Sounds cool to me Sebastian.  According to the ICA website, the exhibition is divided into four sections: The End is Near, Democracy, Gender Trouble and Desire and Longing.  It is this fourth section that addresses the emergence of queer visibility brought on by the AIDS crisis that interests me the most.

No plans this weekend or will you have extra time during this last week in December? Check out a local museum / art exhibit. You may be surprised how much you enjoy yourself.  If my post has piqued your interest, read more about the ICA’s exhibit here.

I’m So Excited

Im so excitedLos amantes pasajeros otherwise known as I’m So Excited is Pedro Almodóvar’s next movie.

According to IMDB, I’m So Excited is set to open in Spain in March 2013 and stars Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.

While I’m no movie buff, this film looks like something I’d enjoy watching.  Check out the promo trailer I’ve included below.

Os Gemos Brazilian street artists at ICA

Brazil Street ArtHere I’m posing by street art (or graffiti depending on your perspective) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil from earlier this week.  It reminded me that the Os Gemos exhibit at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art closes this weekend.

If you’ve not had a chance to check out this first solo exhibition in the United States of works by the Brazilian brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo consider grabbing tickets before the show closes on November 25th.

Boston Ballet Fall Program opens tonight

The Boston Ballet 2012-2013 season starts tonight with The Fall Program, a trio of contemporary works to be presented October 25 – November 4 at The Boston Opera House.

The program features three visionary choreographers, including Christopher Bruce’s Rooster, William Forsythe’s The Second Detail, and a world premiere by Boston Ballet’s Resident Choreographer, Jorma Elo.

I’ll be attending opening night and can hardly wait.  If you have not been to the ballet before (or perhaps it has been awhile), consider The Fall Program that runs for little more than a week.  Purchase tickets here.

MFA exhibit: Mario Testino “In Your Face”

mario testino and tom bradyThe Mario Testino show In Your Face at the MFA Boston includes 122 photographs.  Have you already seen this show which premiered at Boston’ Museum of Fine Arts this past weekend and will run through February 3rd?

This show would seem to be a “Must See” for fashionistas and pop culture enthusiasts.  What an amazing opportunity; no schlepping to the MoMA in MidTown, NYC like you had to see the Alexander McQueen show. More about this show at the MFA here.
