Free pilates bootcamp series comes to Ink Block

fitness, health, free work outEarlier this week BostInno reported that Boston’s Ink Block would be hosting four one hour pilates bootcamp sessions run by: Lauren Hefez who currently teaches at Equinox (Franklin and Dartmouth) and Somerville’s Soul Train; Eliza Shirazi who teaches at The Club by George Foreman III, Equinox at Chestnut Hill and numerous locations for BeGritsy; and Meagan Fitzgerald who teaches at Barre.

The first free pilates class is Saturday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

The hour-long classes run from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on March 21 and 28 as well as April 4 and 11 in the lobby of 300 Harrison Avenue at Boston’s Ink Block in SoWa. They hope to expand the program to the pool deck at the Ink Block when the weather warms up.

It appears that the organizers over at Lawn D in Southie (near the convention center) are taking Dale Carnegie’s quote, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” to heart. Originally scheduled for Valentine’s weekend, the Lawn on D in Southie moved Slopefest to this weekend.

Friday, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, downhill winter sport exhibition
Saturday, 11:00 am – 8:00 pm, snow tubing downhill winter sport exhibition
Sunday, 11:00 am – 8:00 pm, snow tubing

A custom-designed illuminated bar carved out of ice will be present alongside the 70′ long slope that is made of fresh, packed powder snow.  The MCCA will supply snow tubes for anyone who buys tickets.  Tickets will be sold on site for $3 a run or $5 for two runs.  For all you voyeurs out there you can check out the Snow Riders exhibition on Friday and Saturday where experienced skiers and snowboarders will show off their moves.

DJs will be playing music and you can enjoy food and alcohol by fire pits.  Finally a use for all this snow. More details about is available here.

Museum of Fine Arts BostonAre you lucky enough to have the day off in observance of the MLK holiday? If so, you may want to consider heading over to the MFA Boston which is open and free to the public on Monday, January 19, 2015.  Special events and tours will be available to all who visit the museum between 10 – 4:45pm so take advantage of this opportunity.  The colder, winter months are the perfect time to check out and support these local institutions.  You just might be surprised by how much you enjoy yourself if you’ve not visited the MFA recently.

Fire and Ice Festival moved to Jan 2-4

The Lawn on D, Winter on D, BostonThe Fire and Ice Festival on South Boston’s “The Lawn D” had to be postponed in December due to unseasonably mild temperatures.  The festival will now take place starting on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 4PM.  Organizers are calling the Winter on D programming for this weekend, “Fire and Ice Festival”.

Boston Magazine wrote in December that The Lawn on D will be “transformed into a winter wonderland during the daytime portions of the festival, with “hotter” entertainment lined up for the evenings.”   The “icy” features from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days will include the following:

• A winter-themed pavilion with ice bar serving beer, wine, and hot cocoa
• A giant five-foot-tall, 50′ x-50′ ice labyrinth with ice sculpture designs
• Food trucks

Evening “fire” programming runs  from 5 to 8 p.m. and includes:

• Live fire art performers from American Repertory Theater and the Oberon
• Free chowder samples from Legal Sea Foods
• Propane fire pits will be set up for visitors to warm up around

Later today more than 150 tuba players are expected to participate in Boston’s annual Tuba Christmas Concert in Faneuil Hall.

After the workout, Public Body representatives will deliver the food you and others donated to Rosie’s Place food pantry so that others who are less fortunate can enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday a bit more.

Free coffee from Lavazza in Boston thru Monday

coffeeHey caffeine addicts look out for the Italian coffee company Lavazza driving around Boston and offering free coffee this weekend.  Their mobile cafe came to Boston yesterday and is driving around town through Monday.

First Friday in South End from 5-9PM

Come down to the South End (450 Harrison Ave. to be exact) to meet local artists and view their work from 5-9PM tonight. The First Friday of each month more than 60 artists open their studios in the 450 Harrison building making it easy to walk around, socialize and see artists in their studios no matter what the weather is like outside.

Local galleries in the South End also support First Fridays by remaining open like, Boston Sculptor’s Gallery at 486 Harrison Avenue.  After chatting with local artists and viewing some of their work head over to one of your favorite South End restaurants to grab a cocktail and dinner. If you need any suggestions, give me a shout and I’m happy to play the role of concierge.

Boston Athenaeum open house Nov. 2nd

Boston AthenaeumOn Sunday, November 2nd the Boston Athenaeum will host an open house that allows the public to come in and visit all twelve stories of this beautiful building; including the fifth floor reading room – only accessible to members.

Boston Book Festival kicks off tonight

Boston Book FestivalTonight Herbie Hancock kicks off the 2014 Boston Book Festival with his Memoir Keynote and on Friday evening Susan Minot gives the Fiction Keynote.  On Saturday the 2014 BBF starts in earnest with programs through out the weekend.

Illuminus in South End Saturday, Oct 25

SoWa, South End, Boston Looking for something different to do this Saturday?  Check out Illuminus, an artistic event happening on October 25th in the SoWa neighborhood, across Harrison Avenue in the Power Station (by the BSC South End) and surrounding parking lots.

This is a free nighttime festival of creative innovation, featuring large-scale light projections and installations that include immersive sound, performance, and multimedia experiences that are created to help you reimagine the Boston at night. The free event will be held from 6:00 PM – midnight and will include light projections, music, performances and food trucks.
