Freddie Mercury tribute at Oberon, Wednesday, August 10
Boston joins cities all over the world to celebrate the life, memory and music of Freddie Mercury with “Freddie For A Day”. In addition to celebrating Mercury’s music contributions the evening brings people together to help raise awareness and funds for the Mercury Phoenix Trust – fighting AIDS worldwide.
Boston’s “Freddie For A Day” celebration takes place at the Oberon Theater on Wednesday night. Three local bands will pay tribute to and perform Queen songs while a silk aerialist dressed as Freddie Mercury performs overhead.
A raffle and costume contest will also be held so come down to The Oberon in Cambridge and enjoy an evening of great music. Tickets on sale now through OBERON for $20 and limited half priced tickets on sale through Bostix.
Detachable Penis by King Missile
Do you remember this alternative rock hit by King Missile? I remember Boston radio station, 101.7 WFNX, having this in heavy rotation when it first came out in the early 90s, but I hadn’t given it much thought until I was reading Blobby’s blog last week, and I saw his accompanying photo to his post, Penis Song.
The lyrics of this song still make me laugh. The opening line is, “I woke up this morning with a bad hangover and my penis was missing again.” If you’ve never heard the song before I’m glad I could share it with you and if you are familiar – enjoy the throwback.

Controversy Boston celebrates the life of Prince tonight at Machine
Along with their usual mix of hip-hop & reggae, DJ Begbick will project synced Prince music videos all night long so dance your way over to the weekly party hosted by Teashaboo and be sure to check out their special Prince-themed performance. The celebration starts at 10PM upstairs at Machine.
Street pianos will return to Boston in September
In September 2013 seventy-five pianos were installed in public locations across Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville for anyone to play. The “Street Pianos Boston: Play Me I’m Yours” public piano installation was to commemorate the 75th season of the Celebrity Series of Boston.
Earlier this week The Celebrity Series of Boston reported that the popular art installment Play, Me, I’m Yours will return to Boston this fall (September 23-October 10, 2016). This time, sixty pianos will be decorated by local artists and spread across every neighborhood in Boston and select Cambridge locations.
However, before the pianos hit the streets of Boston, each piano will become a piece of visual art, created by a local artist. Celebrity Series is asking visual artists of all backgrounds, artistic abilities and mediums to apply to decorate one of the sixty pianos that will be available to the public this fall. Artist applications will be accepted through May 25 at streetpianosboston.org.
It has been reported that Prince has died
From HuffingtonPost Prince, the legendary musician who brought us countless hits, such as “Purple Rain” and “When Doves Cry,” has died, TMZ reports. He was 57. The award-winning artist died on Thursday at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota. The cause of death has yet to be released.
News of Prince’s death has hit me the way many said they felt when David Bowie’s passing was reported. Not only was his music incredibly influential but his string of hits and protégés who he nurtured and encouraged was impressive to say the least. Although Prince’s influence had waned over the past 20 years, his legacy is impressive and it bothers me to write about his passing.
Ruth Pointer is at Club Cafe Sunday, April 17th
Ruth Pointer of The Pointer Sisters was originally scheduled to visit Club Cafe last month but had to reschedule and will be in Boston tomorrow afternoon at Club Cafe on Sunday, 17th at 5PM for a Q&A and to sign of her new memoir “Still So Excited!: My Life As A Pointer Sister“.

I’ve been watching The Voice this season and have to admit I’ve developed a little bit of a crush on the handsome and charming contestant Bryan Bautista. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one – just last week guest coach Miley Cyrus was practically gushing when she talked to him. I’ve come to refer to Bryan as my TV crush. Check out his audition and wait til the very end – he is more than just a handsome face – he is a bit of a practical joker and very funny too.
Butterfly Music Transgender Chorus
The Butterfly Music Transgender Chorus is the nation’s second all-transgender chorus, and the only chorus of its kind in New England. The chorus will give their first public concert on Saturday, April 9th at First Church at 66 Marlborough St. in Back Bay.
UPDATE: The Saturday, April 9th concert has sold out! A second public concert will take place on Saturday, April 16th in Harvard Square at the University Lutheran Church, located at 66 Winthrop Street. Doors will open at 7:15 pm and the concert will begin at 8:00 pm. If you are interested in attending, general seating tickets can be purchased here.

Cyndi Lauper & Boy George in Boston
It doesn’t get much gayer than this: Saturday, May 21st Cyndi Lauper and Boy George drop by Boston to perform one show at the Wang Theatre. Tickets were available at the time that I wrote this post, but this is a show that will likely sell out (and quickly).
