Tweet of the day: NRA liked 1.7 million times

NRAOne day before the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting the NRA tweeted that their facebook page had reached 1.7 million “likes”.  To anyone living in the United States, this would not be a surprise.  My personal views of outlawing all semi-automatic and automatic weapons,  restricting the production of ammunition and insisting upon oversight and regulations that are as strict as other industrialized nations makes me seem like a left-wing freak by comparison to my fellow Americans.

Nearly 30,000 Americans are killed by guns each year

Last week when I Tweeted about the tragedy and wrote a post about the shooting many were quick to point out that if someone wants to commit these crimes gun control would not prevent them.  However, I can’t think of a more naive defense.  Of course I don’t presume that if we had strict gun control laws we would never have shootings, but there is big difference between “never” and a significant drop in deaths caused by guns.  Don’t believe me; look at other democratic, industrialized nations.

The US accounts for 87% of all children killed by guns and 80% of all people killed by guns in the 23 wealthiest nations

Gun control works and it would work here too.  If we didn’t believe armament restrictions and regulation was effective, we wouldn’t make it illegal to  sell grenades, grenade launchers and bazookas. Its not that far of a stretch in the aftermath of this tragedy to imagine how many more might have been killed if these items were not banned so if it makes sense to restrict these armaments where is the defense for allowing Americans to legally purchase semi-automatic and automatic guns and ammunition with less paperwork than renting a car?

The murder rate in the U.S. is almost 20 times higher than the next 22 richest and most populous nations combined

Maybe if we had gun control the tragedy in Sandy Hook would have still happened, but at least as a nation we could say that we’re working to try to prevent it rather than shrugging our shoulders and shaking our heads at the senseless nature of it all.Gun ControlI recognize that there is a lot of discussion about if the shooter from this tragedy was mentally ill (and my guess is he must have been). While there is much work to be done to help those suffering from mental illness I see these as two separate issues.  Without easy access to guns who could say what might have been or if this tragedy would’ve been avoided. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that so many Americans naively assume gun control won’t work; all the data on this suggests otherwise.  I find it sickening that a nation with such incredible vision could be so blind on this topic.

Sandy Hook Elementary School

School Shooting

I thought I’d acknowledge the tragedy in Connecticut today; 27 murdered in cold blood – 20 of them children between the ages of 5-10.  Sadly Sandy Hook Elementary School now joins the ranks of Columbine, Red Lake High School, and Virginia Tech – forever associated with this unthinkable tragedy. The fact that the victims were so young, the fact that Christmas is around the corner, the fact that I feel this was avoidable if we had stronger gun laws consumes me and was all I could talk about at work today.

I’m trying to reconcile those feelings with a Tweet I just read from the National Rifle Association, proudly proclaiming that more than 1.7 million Americans liked their facebook page to show their support for the nation’s largest gun lobbying group.

There are many reasons to be proud of the United States. Our obsession with guns is not one of them and my heart breaks for all those directly impacted. I have no ties to anyone in that school and I’m shaken to my core.  Sadly there is no recourse and more shootings will likely follow in the new year since Americans stubbornly refuse to support gun control.

Latinos support marriage equality

It is now one month since the 2012 Presidential election. Aside from the woman’s vote, no group has been more obsessed over than the growing Latino vote.  So I was fascinated to read that last month ABC reported,

Nearly six-in-ten Latino voters (59%) said their state should legally recognize same-sex marriage while 32% said their state should not. But among all voters, about half (48%) favored legalization of gay marriage while nearly the same share said they would oppose it (47%). Non-Hispanic whites were the most opposed to states legally sanctioning same-sex marriage (47% favored but 50% were opposed).

On the surface Latinos seem to be a ripe constituency for the Republican Party but based on exit polling this demographic appears to be evolving toward greater acceptance of same-sex couples.  This isn’t completely surprising since it also mirrors LGBT advances in many Latin and South American countries.

If true, this is problematic for a Republican Party hoping to gain a larger voter base without becoming more socially progressive.

Republican party

Andrew-SullivanIt is one month to the day since the 2012 Presidential elections.  I’m still amazed by the results of the election and wanted to share a comment from Andrew Sullivan following the election which left social progressives giddy and was met with shrieks of disbelief from Fox News.

“The Republican candidate failed to get even 40 percent of the vote in New York State and California. The latter is the most remarkable. It was Nixon’s and Reagan’s home-state. And now their party is essentially based in Mississippi.”    – Andrew Sullivan

Funny protest signs

Youth in Asia ProtestThese were two of my favorite “funny protest signs” from a recent Huffington Post write up by the same name.  I love the hypocrisy of those who quote random passages in Leviticus but ignore the majority of the text that are inconvenient like this handsome protester points out.  However, it is the idiotic couple below protesting euthanasia who truly concern me; I’m sure they vote.

More funny protest signs here.

Classic Thanksgiving photos

At this point of the day most Americans are catatonic because they ate too much turkey. In honor of the food coma you may find yourself, I thought I’d share these classic photos of turkeys (both of the animal and political variety).  Can you believe it was just 4 short years ago America was able to say good bye to President George W. Bush, and Governor Sarah Palin was rebuffed by a horrified electorate watching her pardon a turkey in honor of Thanksgiving while another is being slaughtered behind her during a television interview.

Marriage equality campaigns nominated “Wicked Awesome”

Marriage equalityWell, technically the category these marriage equality campaigns have been nominated is not “Wicked Awesome”.

The four successful marriage equality campaigns have been nominated collectively as the most successful grassroots organization this year. With their historic wins at the election booth, they make for a compelling consideration at the very least.

You may join me, by voting for RootsCamp 2012, here.

Much thanks again to blogger Joe My God for sharing this bit of new.

Chicago Tribune: Equality Wins at the Polls

May 2012  Ralph Reed of the Faith and Freedom Coalition called Obama’s announcement supporting same-sex marriage an “unanticipated gift to the Romney campaign” that would drive religious Americans to the polls to vote against Obama.

November 2012 Four states in different regions of the country all reject ballot initiatives designed to prevent same sex couples from marrying.  In Maine, marriage equality wins for the first time by popular vote and President Obama goes on to win the election by nearly four million votes.

What a difference six months make, huh?  Echoing my thoughts from earlier this year, The Chicago Tribune on Monday wrote a well thought out editorial entitled, Equality Wins at the PollsThe editorial concludes what we’ve all known for a long, long time; marriage equality for the LGBT community is unstoppable.  Chew on that Ralph Reed.

Thanks to Joe My God for the tip about the Tribune’s editorial.

Tell Macy’s to dump Trump

More than 400,000 people aren’t enough to get Macy’s to dump Donald Trump as a business partner. However, it is nice to see public pressure mounting on the retailer in light of the racist and misogynistic rants from Donald Trump.  It seems to me the only thing Trump values more than the money he makes (courtesy of deals with organizations like Macy’s) is his ego.  It would be nice to hit him both in his wallet and ego so won’t you consider signing this petition?

Feel free to add your name to the online petition HERE.

Much thanks to Kenneth in the (212) blog for sharing this.

Marriage equality gains: Are we at a tipping point?

The Presidential campaign has ended but the impact from the four ballot initiatives regarding marriage equality are only now being realized.  Have we hit a tipping point in the US?

Nearly a decade ago in 2003, when I was standing outside the Massachusetts State House to show my support for same sex marriage I knew I was on the correct side of history – what I didn’t know was when that side would collectively stand up.  The first hint came when President Obama spoke in favor of marriage equality.  Just weeks after Obama let his feelings be known, marriage equality activists in Maryland saw a large swing of support for their ballot initiative coming from the African American electorate.  Indeed his continued support has provided weight behind the argument that this is a civil rights issue and quieted the traditionally homophobic rants of many Black ministers.

I hope activists in more states (hint, hint California) are emboldened by these election results and mobilize.  The combined efforts of States recognizing same sex marriage and Obama’s ability to name new Supreme Court Justices bodes well for social progressives like me.

Lastly, I hope our election results spill beyond our boundaries and encourage those in France, Australia and elsewhere to move forward. I’ve not been this encouraged or excited since Massachusetts first legalized same sex marriage in 2004.

Voter in FL turned away for wearing MIT t-shirt

Oh brother… when I read this story on Friday I nearly fell out of my chair. Did you hear that a woman in Boca Raton, FL was initially hassled and turned away from her local voting booth because she was wearing a t-shirt from one of America’s most prestigious universities?

The story is pretty amazing for two reasons.  First, MIT is not exactly an obscure community college and despite its similarity to “Mitt” it is spelled differently and not in any of the colors or font associated with Mitt Romney’s campaign.  Secondly, Florida law expressly doesn’t forbid someone from walking into a voting booth wearing as many political buttons, shirts or items that they like. So who were the fools managing this voting booth in Boca Raton, FL?

Will the Republican Party become more socially progressive

Meghan supports legalization of marijuana and same sex marriage

Shortly after I published my previous post Lessons for the Republican Party I stumbled upon this video clip of Meghan McCain on Anderson Live.  Meghan McCain has been ridiculed by the Republican Party calling her a RINO (Republican In Name Only) because of her more socially progressive stands (e.g. unflinching support for same sex marriage).  It is this more socially progressive wing in their party, that I would like to see start flexing its muscle.
