Boston’s gay sports clubs / teams

handsome, hunk, shirtless guyEach September, at the start of each academic year, tens of thousands of people move to Boston for the first time.  Whether you are new to Boston or just looking for an excuse to be more active and make some new friends, joining one of the many LGBT sports teams and clubs can help you do both.

TWC Fenway Park takeover this September

Boston PrideThe Welcoming Committee is planning another Fenway Park takeover later this September but you only have until Friday, August 24th to purchase your tickets for the game against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, September 25th.

Tennis player Borna Coric is easy on the eyes

ATP tennis player, handsome tennis player CoricMany of you are unlikely to know who Borna Coric is but this past weekend he upset Roger Federer on grass at the Gerry Weber Open in Germany. With that win, the 21 year old Croat saw his ranking jump to just outside the top 20 (ATP ranking 21). His victory over Federer is all the more impressive when you realize that this is only his second title and his first on grass.

The fact that Borna Coric is so easy on the eyes will only continue to endear him to me. I hope that his recent victory over Roger Federer in Germany provides him with the confidence he will need to have a good run at Wimbledon, which officially starts next week on July 2nd.  Until that time enjoy these photos of the handsome 21 year old. coric ATP, croatian tennis player borna coricborna coric is so handsome, Coric ATPYou can bet, I’ll be writing about this guy again. Boston’s gay dodgeball league

gay boston, gay boston sports leaguesEach Tuesday I feature a different LGBTQ club or organization to try and help gay men living in the Boston area connect. This week I wanted to share with you Boston’s gay dodgeball league. Registration for the summer season will open on Saturday, May 12th and there is a slight discount if you register early.

Dodgeball Summer Registration Opens Saturday, May 12

They will host a pick up game that everyone is welcome to on Thursday, June 28th and games will officially start Thursday, July 12. Games will be held on Thursday evenings at the Holland Community Center in Dorchester.

Boston Red Sox home opener is today

It may be a bit chilly for baseball but New Englanders have a perverse notion of what is spring. Later today the Boston Red Sox will take to the field for the team’s 106th season at Fenway Park in Boston – arguably the most beautiful major league baseball park and certainly my favorite.

For those of you who are excited about the 2018 MLB Season, The Welcoming Committee in Boston is hosting a “Take Over” of Fenway Park and have purchased a block of tickets for Monday, April 30th when the Red Sox host the Kansas City Royals.  This will sell out so if you’re interested get your tickets now.

America’s Finest Kickball – Boston

gay Boston, Keith LondonAmerica’s Finest Kickball League (Boston Chapter) has opened registrations for their spring season, which will begin on Sunday, April 29th. All are welcome to join the free pick up game the week before on Sunday, April 22nd at Moakley Park in Dorchester at 11AM – just be sure to RSVP, here.

America’s Finest Kickball League – Boston (Spring Registration)

The spring season starts on April 29th and runs through July 15th and all are welcome – join with friends or on your own. Registration is only $75 until Thursday, March 22nd, but after that their “Early Bird Special” ends and registration is $85. America’s Finest Kickball League is looking to close their spring season registration by April 16th so don’t delay.

Get sweaty with Boston’s Ironsides rugby team

gay boston, gay boston rugby, gay rugby teamDid you make a New Year’s resolution to get out, do more, be more active? Did you tell yourself that you want to meet more / new people? Boston Ironsides Rugby Football Club might be a group you should check out. They are hosting their first spring practice (indoors – don’t worry) this coming Saturday, January 27th and newcomers are welcome. No prior experience is necessary.

Practice will take place at the BSC Medford (easily accessible from the Orange Line, Wellington Station). Head to the basketball court on the second floor; ready to get sweaty by 2:00 PM. Come with workout clothes, a jump rope (if you have one) and water bottle. Following practice, the club will host an informal meet-and-greet with pizza at The Alley bar in Downtown Crossing. Stonewall Sports: Billiards & Dodgeball registration is now open

This week I wanted to feature a relative newcomer to the area, Stonewall Sports, which opened a Boston chapter last year and now runs Billiards and Dodgeball leagues that happen to be accepting registrations for their spring season.

Registration for Billiards closes Monday, January 22nd
Registration for Dodgeball closes Tuesday, January 30th

Billiards teams meet each Monday at Scholars in Downtown Crossing from 7:30pm-10:30pm from February 12 – April 2, 2018.

Gay Ski Week: Winter Rendezvous

how to survive a Boston winterThe East Coast response to Aspen Gay Ski Week is Winter Rendezvous which runs January 17 – 21, 2018 at Stowe Mountain Resort in Stowe, VT. In addition to fun on the ski slopes, parties and events are scheduled through out. Some of the highlights from this year’s gay ski week include:  Miss Coco Peru, Wet and Wild Pool Party, Downhill Costume Drag Competition and of course the Blowout Party with DJ Steve Sidewalk from NYC.

Holiday gift idea: Warwick Rowers 2018 calendar

Are you and your friends planning a Yankee Swap or Secret Santa? Do you have a friend who is tough to buy for and you can’t spend a lot of money? Why don’t you consider the Warwick Rowers 2018 calendar?

At just under £10 you really only have to worry about ordering it in time to get here before your holiday party or gift swap.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the male rowers at the University of Warwick Boat Club, these men have been creating & selling calendars since 2009. Proceeds raised from the sale of their calendars, videos etc go to

  • Promote positive, inclusive and respectful attitudes towards people of all genders and sexualities through the content that they create
  • Fund university rowing and particularly to make rowing more accessible to a wider number of students
  • Ongoing development of Sport Allies, a registered charity with a mission to promote sport, and particularly team sport, as an inclusive and supportive route to personal growth for everyone

If none of that really matters, it doesn’t hurt that each year the young men are so damn good looking in that ‘guy-next-door’ sort of way. For their more revealing photos you’ll have to check them out online or better yet peruse their many products for sale, here.

Stonewall Sports Boston: Billiards

I’m pleased to let you know yet another LGBTQ club / sports team has formed here in Boston. Stonewall Sports – Boston is a chapter of Stonewall Sports that created earlier this year in 2017.  According to their website, “the group is partnering with local businesses and establishments to bring enrich the local LGBTQ community by providing social outlets through sports and activities.”

Head of the Charles regatta is Saturday & Sunday, October 21-22

Every city has their own traditions and events that are distinctly their own. I like to write about these events here in Boston because it is easy to take them for granted or overlook how they contribute to and enrich the city. One such unique tradition which I associate with the autumn is the Head of the Charles Regatta.

The annual event typically occurs while foliage is nearing its peak each year in Boston and it can make for a beautiful backdrop for the 11,000+ athletes who are expected come to compete in the world’s largest regatta this weekend.

The Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is a Boston area tradition that dates back to 1965 and has evolved into the world’s largest rowing competition that spans two days, drawing more than 400,000 spectators who line the banks of the Charles River on both the Cambridge and Boston sides. Be sure to check it out. I prefer to watch from the Cambridge side between the Harvard footbridge and the JFK bridge but there really isn’t a bad place to watch
