SpeakEasy Stage ends season with Dogfight

Boston Theater

SpeakEasy Stage presents Dogfight at the Calderwood through June 4, 2016

SpeakEasy Stage is concluding their 25th season with the musical, Dogfight. The two act musical tells the story of three young Marines on their last night in San Francisco before they are shipped off to Vietnam.

The story centers around a contest the marine platoon hosts for each man to find and bring the homeliest girl to a party (shown above). The main character, Eddie Birdlace, unexpectedly develops feelings for his date and what follows will touch the romantic in you; at least it did with me.  The cast does the musical justice and this was probably my favorite production of their entire season. While the lead characters did a fine job I was especially taken by the crass and sassy supporting character, Marcy, who made me laugh every time she was on stage.

I’d love to get the thoughts of any women who may be familiar with the story or those who go to the SpeakEasy Stage production. This makes for a great date night option or evening spent with friends. Get your tickets, (they start at just $25) and tell me what you think.

SpeakEasy Stage’s Dogfight opens Saturday, May 7

Boston theaterThe SpeakEasy Stage concludes their 25th season with their production, Dogfight, a powerful musical about an unlikely love story set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War.

Dogfight: It’s November 21, 1963; and on the eve of their deployment to a small but growing conflict in Southeast Asia, three young Marines set out for one final boys’ night of debauchery, partying, and maybe a little trouble. But when Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of love and compassion.

Gold Dust Orphans present Legally Blind

Ryan Landry, Fringe theater, BostonRyan Landry and his band of misfit actors, The Gold Dust Orphans, present a brand new musical adventure based on “The Miracle Worker” and “Gypsy”.

The full name of the musical is, “LEGALLY BLIND – The Helen Keller Musical” Based on two classic pieces of American theatre, William Gibson’s “The Miracle Worker” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Gypsy”, “LEGALLY BLIND – The Helen Keller Musical” gleefully follows the musical misadventures of one Annie Sullivan, (Ryan Landry) and her physically challenged yet remarkably gifted student, Helen (Jessica Barstis) as they wind their way along the ever changing landscape of adult entertainment through song, dance and plenty of laughs.

Tickets are currently on sale for the limited run which opens on Thursday, April 21st.  For more information and to purchase tickets online link here.

SpeakEasy Stage presents Bootycandy

SpeakEasy Stage, Boston Theater, Gay TheaterPerhaps the title of Terry Byrne’s Boston Globe article sums up the SpeakEasy Stage latest production best, ‘Bootycandy’ a comedic scrapbook of growing up black and gay.

If you had not heard, the New England premiere of Bootycandy opened this weekend and runs through Saturday, April 9th. The play is described as a shockingly funny and saucy spin on race, sex, and sexuality, and it was inspired by the author’s own experiences growing up black and gay. I look forward to seeing this play later this week and hope that many of you will come out to support this local production, which speaks directly to the LGBT community. The best way to encourage more LGBT themed theater productions is to come and see them when they are produced.

Bootycandy Information and Tickets Here

If you don’t want to go alone The Welcoming Committee is planning to attend en masse on Wednesday, March 30th. More information about TWC event is available here.
