Bill Gates discusses energy innovation

http://video.ted.com/assets/player/swf/EmbedPlayer.swf
I know this is not my typical post, but I greatly admire Bill Gates and his wife for their dedication and championing of causes to help make the world a better place.

The video is a bit long, but fascinating. Gates talks about his concern for global warming and its impact on the world (esp the poorest). What I found most interesting starts at the 8 minute mark where he identifies types of energy where he thinks innovation might take place to achieve significant carbon reduction, despite existing challenges.

Housemartins: music for a Friday afternoon

Since the 80s seem to be hip again, I figured I’d share what I’m listening to today. This song is off the CD by the same name, Housemartins The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death. If you’re not familiar with this 80s UK band, check out the video below (sorry its so grainy). I think of the Housemartins as a happier and more pop-styled version of the Smiths.

Kylie Minogue Boston show on sale today

Kylie Minogue tickets went on sale this morning for her Boston show on Friday, April 29th. Needless to say, since my friend Andy purchased tickets I haven’t been able to get her out of my head. Its fair to say I’m spinning around.

Okay, I’ll stop with the play on words with Kylie lyrics. I’m no longer in high school. This should be a blast, she’s playing at the Agganis Arena at Boston University. If you like Kylie (and let’s be frank – who doesn’t?) check and see if tickets remain.

Boston No Pants Subway Ride Video

All day Monday, I received emails from friends who had seen my partner, Sergio, on the local news as they reported about this event / prank. One friend called me to let me know yours truly was gracing the pages of the Boston Metro (a free paper mostly read by those who ride the MBTA – Boston’s public transit system). I’ve taken some ribbing for my choice of socks and shoes, but I needed something that was comfortable and warm so I stand by my choice.

I know that WGB and Universal Hub both posted my video on their sites, which in part have helped to contribute to more than 2,500 views in the first 24-hours. If you see this posted on other sites, let me know so I may contact the person and say “thank you”. I’m still a not on facebook so should you see this posted on someone’s page – say thanks to them on my behalf.

Boston No Pants Subway Ride 2011

The Boston Society of Spontaneity hosted their annual “No Pants Subway Ride” this afternoon, and on a whim I joined with my partner. I’ve never had so much fun on the T (Boston’s metro system – MBTA).

Check out my video clip.

Absolutely hilarious

Not sure what it says about my sense of humor that I find this so funny, but I can’t help myself. I figured it is best to start 2011 with a post that makes me laugh so here you have it. Happy New Year.

Show Tune Tuesday @dbar

For those not familiar with Boston’s gay scene, every Tuesday there is a bar in Dorchester (a Boston neighborhood) that plays show tunes. It has become something of an unspoken tradition that my friend Paul and I meet there on the Tuesday between Christmas and New Years.
Last night’s Show Tune Tuesday crowd I was surprised that this year was less crowded, but it did not impact the fun we had chatting with everyone, and it allowed all my requests to be played 🙂 When the DJ played Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked it was a sight to behold. Rarely do so many people sing with such reckless abandon in public – its really a something to see. Dbar had a slight technical malfunction last night around 10ish when their system died and everything had to revert to cash. Kudos to Brit and the other bartenders who did their best to keep everyone laughing and having a good time. dbar’s handsome bartenders As you can see from the Cazwell video, not all songs are from showtunes, but mind you songs from Hedwig, Hairspray, Grease, The Little Mermaid, several numbers from this season’s Glee episodes all received air time. Should you live in Boston or visit and want to have fun midweek – this is the bar to check out.

Jingle jingle

I hope your bells get jingled this Christmas.

2010 Santa Speedo Run video makes the rounds

Hello All – I’m taking a moment to brag about my Santa Speedo Run video which has been picked up by a number of different blogs lately. Dave over at WGB really got the ball rolling for me by posting my video and linking back to my little corner of the internet – thanks Dave.

Earlier today, I found out that Instinct Magazine picked up WGBs pictures and my video, which you can see here.

DanNation also picked up my clip and added a witty headline, which you can see here.

And this evening I came home from the gym to read that the Towleroad has posted my video.

I’m so happy everyone enjoyed it as much as I did and thanks to the handsome guy in his plaid underwear and all the others who offered to pose.

Ain’t Nobody

I was listening to Pandora today and Ain’t Nobody started to play. I’m not sure I’ve heard this song in a long time, but there are few women who’s voices I love as much as Chaka Khan. What singers / bands from the past still evoke strong emotion when you hear them?

Sam Tsui – King of Anything

Its been awhile since I’ve posted something from YouTube sensation, Sam Tsui, and a quick visit to YT shows a whole batch of new covers he’s taped. As usual, he adds his own flair, interpreting pop songs in his own unique way. Enjoy Sam’s take on Sara Bareilles song, King of Anything.

Other videos from Sam that I’ve posted in the past include:
Michael Jackson Medley
Don’t Stop Believing
Lady Gaga Medley

Largest flashmob evah…

To paraphrase Oprah… “That is so cool.” Watch the largest flash mob evah (pardon the Boston accent). The BEP’s helped kick off Oprah’s 2009 season with the largest flash mob ever. Oprah’s expressions are priceless.

Australia: Hot Stuff

Keeping with the theme of my previous post, I figured I’d add another number from last year’s Drag! Camp as Christmas show that I saw at the Sydney Opera House. Feel free to load in HD as the resolution is a bit better and it only takes a minute and of course enjoy the creative interpretation of the Donna Summer classic, Hot Stuff.

Must Watch: Graeme Taylor

Earlier this month Howell High School economics teacher Jay McDowell was reprimanded for addressing a student for making gay slurs in class. The school suspended McDowell without pay for 14 days for his actions and was mandated to take training on First Ammendment rights.

The video below is from Graeme Taylor. Watch how he calmly invokes the words of Dr. Martin Luther King as asks the Howell school board to reconsider their disciplinary actions. http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1
If the gay movement can come to expect more young men and women like Graeme in the next generation to step forward than the future for GLBT Americans is definitely a bright one.

You can read the full story about the incident here.

Thank you to the blog, Maybe its just me for sharing and bringing this to my attention.
Please consider spreading the word and posting if you have a blog.

Million dollar bill

Last night I was at the bachelor auction at Club Cafe to raise money for the Boston FLAG football league and the Harbor to the Bay Ride. This video was played later in the night and it made me think about the last time I heard this song which I’ll blog about next week.

Enjoy the campy video interpretation of the Whitney Houston song.
