GROWLr live streaming shows starting today

Last month the gay “dating app” GROWLr announced that they would start offering live-streaming broadcasts and video chats to its members as a way to help people feel connected and provide entertaining distractions while staying at home and practicing social distancing.

For example, users can play in “Next Date” mode, a feature that converts a live-stream into a mini-dating game where you are prompted with questions, and based on responses, decide whether to move on or continue the date.

More interesting (to me) is the live programming that the GROWLr team has come up with that starts tonight with gay rapper Big Dipper and Jackie Beat this Saturday. Also be sure to check out Ms. Varla Jean Merman perform live on Saturday, May 16th. All shows are free to everyone on the GROWLr app.

Hat Tip to Matthew Rettenmund and his blog boy culture for the heads up.

Vintage gay

gay couple cuddling

Check out this playful photo of these guys cuddling for a photo in their suits and  boutonnieres.  Anyone care to guess when this photo may have been taken?

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? This week on Instagram: disco_art_deco

While I have no information about the account owner, the description of this account speaks for itself  suggesting it is a collection of vintage gay magazines and notable interiors from an era of divine decadence.

I’ve interpreted that to mean that the account mostly posts photos of men, gay couples, gay porn magazine covers and architecture from the 70s and 80s. For some, this account will be quite nostalgic and for others it may seem like another universe but for me it is a distant memory and probably why I started following.

Massachusetts continues to be a leader in public education: Why I think that matters

In an age where many feel like access to a  quality education is only available to the wealthiest it isn’t really surpirsing that many have developed a distrust of our education system.  Over the past 20 years we’ve seen this distrust extend to people who are highly educated and articulate. So perhaps I’m bucking the trend here bragging about Massachusetts recent rankings in US News & World Report of the best high schools in the nation; half of Massachusetts’ high schools are in the top quarter of the national rankings — the highest proportion of any state.

I recognize that there are significant disparities in Massachusetts public education system; those raised in affluent communities absolutely have advantages children in poorer communities do not. However, regardless of party affiliation in this state, there is a genuine commitment to investing in education and it is that consensus that I think helps drives Massachusetts ranking year after year. It is my hope that the “war on education” in our politics and society will stop. Bravo Massachusetts on continuing to excel and your commitment to public education. There is definitely room to improve and addressing inequality in our system ranks fairly high on that list, but kudos for being a leader here.

In a Paris state of mind

Ten years ago today Sergio and I were in Paris. He had surprised me earlier in the year with tickets to Paris for my birthday which is actually tomorrow.  This year to celebrate we had planned a long weekend by the beach but that obviously will not happen.

So this year I find myself reflecting not only upon the past year but also this  wonderful birthday, ten years ago, that took me to one of my favorite cities in the world. Since Sergio and I cannot celebrate by sipping drinks somewhere warm and tropical, I thoought I’d share photos from this birthday celebration from the past. The memories still bring me so much happiness.
