Southie’s Cambria Hotel will have rooftop bar
There is a tremendous amount of construction taking place along the South End / Southie line. One of those projects is the Cambria Hotel, which is scheduled to open in late June across from the Broadway T station (located at 14 West Broadway). The 159 room, boutique hotel will feature what looks to be a beautiful rooftop restaurant and bar run by Boston Nightlife Ventures (BNV).
BNV is better known for their bars than their restaurants so the quality of the restaurant may be questionable but what isn’t up for debate is how great this will be for grabbing drinks with friends. There is no other space like it in the South End or Southie and is sure to be a favorite spot. Stay tuned for more details.

South End real estate market remains hot
The Steven Cohen Real Estate Team has published their Spring 2019 South End Stakeholder’s report. Their report compiles data pertaining to the real estate market both locally and nationally.
The findings will not be a surprise but does help put the latest real estate boom in perspective. Below are a few of the findings that caught my attention.
- Boston remains one of the most robust and expensive markets in the US. The city of Boston has a median listing price of more than $500,000 and prices are projected to grow by 4.6%.
- Boston is growing faster than city planners expected (population estimate for Boston in 2030 will top 760,000 residents). In response Mayor Walsh wants to build 69,000 more units with more than 20% earmarked as “affordable units” for qualified buyers.
- The South End was second to Southie for number of sales by neighborhood; 632 units were sold in 2018 vs. 598 in 2017.
- The median sale price in the South End is now just under $1,000,000 at $990,000 in 2018 vs. $925,000 in 2017.
The South End continues to increase in cost which is both great news for home owners and disappointing if we want to remain a vibrant community. With prices continuing to rise, it seems less likely that we will meet our own commitment to be a community that welcomes everyone.
The South End’s revival is nothing short of amazing, but I would like to see this neighborhood become a place where more people from different walks of life have an opportunity to be a part of this amazing community and the spiraling cost of housing makes that less likely so the Cohen report is bittersweet to read.
Vintage gay
This week’s vintage gay post really makes me think about Boston’s Hat Sisters. I wonder if one of our very own hat sisters could be related to one of these men?
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
This week on Instagram: caylanhughes
Caylan Hughes describes himself as a true Southern “gingy”. He was born and raised in Nashville, TN and has transitioned from playing college sports to modeling and personal training. Unfortunately, I found out that his account is no longer active which is a shame, but you can get a feel for what his account was like by checking out this Tumblr page.

Changes proposed for Uber or Lyft rides to Logan Airport
Right now, if you use a ride sharing app to catch a flight leaving Logan airport you’re dropped off right in front of your terminal, but last week Massport unveiled a plan that would redirect where ride-sharing drivers can drop off and pick up passengers (and of course potentially raising their airport fee to $5.00).
According to Massport figures, last year more than 5 million trips were made by cars driving out of the airport empty after dropping off passengers. The changes suggested are aimed at cutting that number by 30% while at the same time, by centralizing a drop off / pick up area (currently proposed to be at the central parking garage), decrease wait times for passengers and encourage more ride sharing drivers to stay at the airport to pick up customers before leaving.
Nothing has been confirmed as yet. You can read the full article here.
