A Drag Queen Christmas

It may be difficult to think of the holiday season as we enter the second half of June but earlier this week tickets went on sale for the 9th annual tour: A Drag Queen Christmas. The holiday tour comes to Boston, making a stop for one night at the Emerson Colonial Theater on Saturday, November 18th.

2023 Boston Pride Parade: So much fun

Coming into Pride Week in Boston, there were a lot of questions about the ability of a new grassroots organization, Boston Pride for the People, to host a large, inclusive Pride week. This was the city’s first pride celebration since 2019 and the first hosted by this organization. A coalition that emerged after a vacuum was created when Boston Pride disbanded in 2021.

Overall, I thought the parade was well run and more fun than I expected. My two comments meant as constructive feedback are the start time and lack of music and fun / creative floats.

The earlier-than-usual start time for the parade caught many of us off-guard and we missed the start because it impacted what I’d consider a prime Pride Brunching hour. Another uniquely Boston criticism of those in the parade was a lack of creative floats and fun music. I’d love to see fewer marchers, more creative displays or floats, and most definitely more music in 2024. This is a gay pride parade after all.

Aside from those constructive comments, I think the parade which was 10,000+ strong was a success. From our viewing point on Tremont Street in the South End, everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun. The Boston Globe did an excellent job capturing images and re-posting some popular IG images, here.

SOUTH END BUSINESSES – TAKE NOTE!
FOLLOW THE KARTAL’S LEAD FOR PRIDE 2024

One of the best additions to the Boston Pride parade was the sidewalk party The Kartal Boston threw to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. The owner, Elizabeth Georgantas, who purchased the former gay bar, The Eagle, continues to enrich Boston’s LGBTQ+ community. Throwing a sidewalk party is just the latest example of how she is enhancing Boston’s social and nightlife; Corean Reynolds (Boston’s new nightlife czar) please take note.

South End businesses should also take note! The Kartal had t-shirts to celebrate pride, great music, fun cocktails (served in disco ball cups), and a rainbow Instagram wall with a camera to capture the moment. How amazing would it be if restaurants all along Tremont and Berkeley followed Elizabeth’s lead? How fun would it be to see similar parties in 2024 at Banyan, Frenchie, Beehive, Barcelona, etc.? Talk about a block party. It would bring in many more people, make those establishments a lot of money, and contribute tremendously to the party-like atmosphere.

Much thanks to all the organizers, volunteers, and the city of Boston for hosting such a fun day. We look forward to next year’s celebration.

riddle, exercise for your brain

Each Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together. Leave your guess in the comment section.

This week’s riddle: The more you let me run, the heavier I get. Who / what am I?

I’ll approve responses later in the day to allow people to respond without seeing any spoilers.

Dani’s Queer Bar (update)

Back in March, Dani’s Queer Bar announced they would be targeting June 1st for their grand opening – one week before Boston Pride. However, in a recent announcement, they posted on their Instagram account last month, one of the co-owners indicated they will not be able to open until later this summer.

Dani’s Queer Bar will be Boston’s only lesbian bar when it opens. Past bars that cater to lesbians closed decades ago as part of a much larger trend. According to the Lesbian Bar Project (yeah, that’s a thing), Dani’s Queer Bar would be only the 28th lesbian bar in the entire country.

Want to follow Dani’s Queer Bar progress and be among the first to learn when they will open? Follow them on their Instagram account, Dani’s Queer Bar  🏳️‍⚧️.

Kiki Beach Boston: Season 8

A couple weeks ago the Kiki Beach Instagram account announced the start of their eighth season.

For those who are unfamiliar with this weekend tradition, eight years ago members of the LGBTQ+ community started going to one section of M Street Beach in Southie on Saturdays. Depending on the weather and week sometimes there are a handful of LGBTQ+ people and sometimes there can be a hundred or more. Over the years, Kiki Beach went from being a Saturday event to both Saturday and Sunday.

gay boston

To help you know which part of the beach the LGBTQ+ community tends to set up for Kiki Beach, check out the map below but for additional guidance, you’ll find most people between the first and second bus shelters (if you are walking away from the L Street Bath House). But when in doubt look for wherever there is a cluster of men standing, chatting, and wearing speedos.

If you will be in Boston this weekend come and check out Kiki Beach. Most people arrive after 12PM, but Sergio and I are often among the very first, arriving by 11AM.
