BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brain

Each Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

I can run, but never walk
I can breathe, but cannot talk
You can pick, but never choose me
Always use, but don’t abuse me

Wicked Queer Film Festival Celebrates Diversity & Community

Wicked Queer Film Festival, gay bostonTwo weeks from today, Wicked Queer, Boston’s annual LGBT film festival, celebrates its 34th year with screenings across the city – bringing the latest in contemporary queer film to our community.

Sunday, March 18: Wicked Queer (Film Festival) Preview Party

This year’s festival opens on a serious note at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston March 29 with A Moment in the Reeds an intimate romantic film about a Syrian refugee and the Finnish college student he falls for. The film, fresh off its premiere at the BFI London International Film Festival, is an auspicious debut from filmmaker Mikko Makela. Director Mikko Makela will be in attendance.gay bostonI’d like to also give a shout out to BPM (Beats per Minute)which will be showing at the Paramount Center on Thursday, April 5th and is free to the public. The movie is about societies response (or maybe it is better say lack of response) to the AIDS crisis impacting Paris in the early 1990s and is entwined with a heartbreaking love story.

Wicked Queer Film Festival March 29 – April 8, 2018

This year’s festival will host screenings at the Museum of Fine Arts, the Paramount Theatre at ArtsEmerson, The Brattle Theater in Cambridge and the Institute of Contemporary Arts.  If you’d like to learn more about this year’s festival visit the Wicked Queer website. There is also information about volunteering if you’d like to get more involved with this wonderful group.

Vintage gay

I have no information about where or when this photo may have been taken but I see it often on Pintrest boards and I like the relaxed and natural pose the two strike for this photograph. I can imagine that they must’ve been quite cozy.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? This week on Instagram: gardnermuseum

art, isabella stewart gardnerThe Isabella Stewart Gardner was once Isabella’s home, but  is now a museum, which has a tiny indoor courtyard with grass and flowers in bloom that are surrounded by artwork that spans centuries and continents. I predict after yesterday’s snowfall, many may be seeking out this tiny garden to escape winter and enjoy the greenery.

As you might imagine the Instagram account has some beautiful photos of the courtyard, the amazing personal artwork collection of Mrs. Gardner and events that take place in this Venetian Palace in the middle of Boston.

Beantown Softball League

sportsEach Tuesday I feature a different LGBTQ club or organization to help connect gay men living in the Boston area. One such group is the Beantown Softball Leauge. I believe that registration for the Spring 2018 season may have already happened but if you are interested in learning more about this group, which has been active in Boston for 40 years, definitely reach out to them. The Spring season starts in April and averages 20 season games which are played on Saturdays, Sundays and Monday nights in Boston.

Founded in 1978, the Beantown Softball League is open to all who would like to play.  The League has 24 teams in 4 divisions of play: competitive, intermediate, and two recreational divisions. Players of all ability levels find a fun and competitive home within the Beantown Softball League.

Review of Godfrey Hotel’s Ruka Restobar

Godfrey HotelLast year I raved about Ruka Boston in my restaurant review, but Sergio was not able to join me so when we found ourselves at the Godfrey Hotel’s second anniversary party recently, it was an easy decision to see if we could get a table at Ruka. This restaurant is part of the COJE Restaurant Group, which also owns and manages, Yvonne’s and Lolita. The over-the top design aesthetic and embellishments that are a hallmark of their other restaurants is on display here with pan-Asian themes running throughout this space that offers a fusion of Peruvian, Japanese and Chinese cuisine.

We were lucky to have a table open in a cozy corner just as we walked in and were promptly seated with a great view of the dining room and bar but away from the bustling aisles that are filled with runners either bringing out or collecting plates. The small plates menu of Japanese-Peruvian cuisine referred to as nikkei really makes their menu unique in Boston so on this visit I opted to order some of my favorite plates from our last visit and try a few new plates.

Ruka Boston, Godfrey Hotel BostonSince Sergio and I were only ordering from the small plates menu the food came out quickly, which was good because by the time we sat down we were famished. First to come out was one of my favorite dishes from my previous visit, the plancha broccoli is served warm with curry, peanuts and topped with broccoli stem fritters. The plate was equally satisfying a second time around. The salty plate is what I would describe as a crowd pleaser and probably one I will continue to order on future visits.

Plancha Broccoli – $14

Our servers also brought out at the same time the Dan Dan  Noodles shown below. I had not tried this on my previous visit and it was something that caught Sergio’s eye. The plate is one of the larger portions and includes mushrooms, Chinese broccoli and peanuts over a bed of thin Chinese Dan Dan noodles.  While I didn’t find any of the plates we ordered particularly spicy, this did have a bit of a kick, which I believe may have been from the chili oil.

Slightly more spicy and a pleasant surprise was the Lima Style Calamari. I rarely order calamari but it is a favorite dish of Sergio’s so I wasn’t particularly surprised when he ordered it. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Ruka’s take on this classic Italian plate. “Lima Style” comes with a lot of garlic butter, red onions and chilies. If you don’t want the extra kick it is easy to pick around the chilies. This was the surprise plate of the night for me. I had little interest in it when served and found myself going back to it again and again.

Lima Style Calamari $14

Our final plate of the evening was also the most filling – the Chao Shou Pork Wontons. Served in chile oil, black vinegar, cilantro and topped with crispy sweet potato crisps, it was as delicious and satisfying as I recalled from my previous visit. Although this proved to be one of the more troubling plates for me to snag one of the slippery wontons with my chop sticks.

Chao Shou Pork Wontons $17

Consistently providing good service and creating plates that satisfy can be a real challenge for many restaurants but on my return visit to Ruka I was impressed by the attentive (but not obtrusive) service, consistency in the plates that I tried for a second time as well as the two plates I tried for the first time on this visit.

I will be back again to try more plates, and I’d recommend you check out Ruka in Downtown Crossing if you’ve never been.
