Vintage gay
Thoughts on when this photo may have been taken? I love the intimacy of their pose. Who can say what their story was but I can tell you I have have a slight crush on the guy on the left. He has beautiful eyes.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. SpeakEasy Stage presents ENGLISH
This Friday, The SpeakEasy Stage of Boston opens with their second production of the 2022/23 season, ENGLISH. The play has received numerous accolades and is described by the New York Theater guide as, “a stunning play about hope, belonging, and desire.”
Set in an English language class in a suburb of Tehran, the student’s teacher, Marjan, insists they speak “English Only!” as she struggles to prepare them for their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The implications and opportunities for the students can be life changing if they pass this exam but of course it isn’t all that simple or straightforward with one student set on derailing the lesson plan.
ENGLISH
October 21 – November 19, 2023
More Info Here
As someone who has struggled to learn a second language off and on over the years, I can relate to the challenge as well as the humor that comes from mispronounciations, mistakes, and misunderstandings, and I look forward to seeing this show which runs from October 21 – November 19, 2022.
Make plans with friends to see this production or make it a date night, but be sure to get your tickets.

The Kartal Boston in South End opens Thursday
The highly anticipated and long awaited opening of The Kartal (the former home of Boston Eagle) will have a soft opening on Thursday.
The Kartal is the first cocktail bar to open in the South End in a long time, and it’s my hope is that this cozy space can be a friendly place for Boston’s gay community to come together. The Kartal will not be marketed as a gay bar but then again neither was Stella, 647 Tremont, or Boston Chops and yet due to their patronage they became unofficial gay bars of Boston.
The new owners are quite familiar with the bar’s history and they have carefully chosen everything from the name to unique decorations and design with its past in mind. For example, the name of the bar, The Kartal, comes from the Turkish word for eagle. Additionally, when you visit, check out the newly tiled mosaic entry. It depicts a two-headed eagle with the dates 1981 and 2021, noting the 40 years the Boston Eagle operated at 520 Tremont Street. The two-headed eagle also symbolizes both the the original and “new” eagle.
I’m sure I’ll be writing more about The Kartal in the future, after I’ve had a chance to stop by and enjoy a cocktail or two. Over the coming weeks, I hope you will also stop by to enjoy a drink and check out the new space. After you visit, let me know what you think.
The Kartal
520 Tremont Street (South End)
Open daily from 5PM – 2AM
Head of the Charles Regatta

The Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is a Boston area tradition that dates back to 1965 and has evolved into a massive, international rowing competition that draws nearly 11,000 athletes and 400,000 spectators, making it the largest rowing event in the world.
HEAD OF THE CHARLES REGATTA OCT. 21-23, 2022
The 2022 HOCR takes place this Saturday and Sunday. Sadly, I’ll be out of town and will miss this fun, annual event. If you’ve not been to this premiere rowing events, head down to the Charles River to cheer on these amazing athletes and enjoy all the activity around the regatta.
The organizers have created a great website that includes more information about the races, maps and FAQs. You can learn more by visiting the official HOCR website, www.hocr.org.
Temptation Tuesday

Say hello to Bulgarian fitness model, Vladislav Gerasimov. This isn’t the first time I’ve posted a photo of him. He was a mancandy post last October (check him out here).

Yikes, this high stepping guard shows a bit more than my pg-13 blog can share. Let’s just say the original photograph shows a third leg.

Nothing Gold Can Stay
Each October, I’ve been faithfully posting this poem since 2009. I love how accessible Frost’s poem is – even to those who claim they “don’t get poetry”. Inspired by the fall foliage of New England, Frosts’ words weave a visual that is easy to follow.
The underlying meaning of this poem also reminds me to make the most of each day and to try and take nothing for granted – a good message for all of us.
Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
This poem, which was first published in the Yale Review in 1923, would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1924. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
