Back Bay Harry’s to open next week
Tables and chairs are in place at the newly remodeled restaurant, Back Bay Harry’s, located on the Back Bay / South End line, and rumors suggest an opening later next week. For those unfamiliar with the new restaurant opening in the space formerly home to Geoffrey’s, Back Bay Harry’s is a hip, casual restaurant and bar. Harry Collings (Back Bay Harry) has teamed up with local celebrity chef, Jason Santos, the man behind Gargoyles (closed in 2011), Abby Lane and Blue Inc. Together they have worked hard to keep their menu affordable with main plates ranging $18-$22 and offering less expensive options with salads, sandwiches and pizzas; perfect bar fare.
The newly redesigned bar which was moved to the opposite side of the restaurant and runs along Stanhope Street seats approximately 60 both at the bar and in surrounding high tops; all with great views of televisions if you want to watch a game. Look for fun weekend bar food specials, featuring some of Santos’ favorite items as well as a vibrant cocktail menu to sate your thirst while you nibble on snacks and appetizers, that range from $4-$12.
You can like Back Bay Harry’s page on Facebook or check back at their website backbayharrys.com to see when they finally open, but as I mentioned previously look for an opening later next week. Back Bay Harry’s is located at 142 Berkeley Street on the South End / Back Bay line.
A kiss is just a kiss (calm down Facebook)
My friend Jesse whom I posted on my blog here was recently banned from Facebook for sharing a photograph of him kissing his partner. Not familiar with the story? Check out the HuffingtonPost write up here.
The publicity that ensued was able to get Facebook’s attention and they quickly rectified the situation telling HuffingtonPost “In this case, we [Facebook] mistakenly removed content and worked to rectify the mistake as soon as we were notified. We apologize for the inconvenience caused due to the removal of this content.”
One wonders if my buddy Jesse didn’t have such an extensive social network what sort of recourse he would have? Would he need to stop posting photos of him kissing his partner? Would cuddling or hugging be too risque and result in continued suspensions? The problem has been rectified and in a way (despite the unfortunate threats made by a few to Jesse & Dirk) the resulting press has hopefully helped to foster conversations about this policy and will make Facebook more sensitive to this in the future.
I’m curious – have you ever experienced this sort of censorship from Facebook?
Furry Friday
October 11 – National coming out day
Every year on National Coming Out Day, we celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or as an ally. On Oct. 11, 2013. This year – the 25th anniversary – theme is “Coming Out Still Matters.” I couldn’t agree more with this theme and its timing. 2013 has seen some landmark legislation that may have some wondering does this still matter? But rights that have been hard fought can be quickly taken away.
Just a week ago Pennsylvania Republican Governor suggested that same-sex marriage was as comparable to incest. However, his comments are hardly isolated in the US as a more radical conservative wing of the Republican Party continues to flex its muscle advocating for such despicable practices as Reparative (otherwise known as “Conversion”) therapy. Additionally, as the world continues to connect through social media, those living in countries abroad can and hopefully do take heart knowing they are not mentally ill or in need of being ‘fixed’.

Lighting art installation
Starting at dusk tonight and running through October 13th each night until 2 AM a public art installation will be visible as a bright-red beam of light will slice the Boston skyline, stretching between two Boston University towers more than a half mile apart.
The afterhours show is part of a temporary public art installation by Florian Dombois. The display is intended to serve as a “metaphorical centerpiece” for TransCultural Exchange’s 2013 conference happening at Boston University, Engaging Minds: International Opportunities in the Arts.
Thanks to BostonInno for the tip.
Keigwin Company #ShareTheMattress
Keigwin Company has created an interesting video campaign on YouTube to mark their 10th anniversary and the return of their signature piece ‘Mattress Suite’.
Several of the videos have gone viral. Below I’ve included the 1 minute video of Matt Baker, Brandon Cournay and Kile Hotchkiss. If you are intrigued, you may watch more videos in the #ShareTheMattress campaign here.
Toys for Joys 2013 – December 14th
One of my favorite holiday traditions in Boston is the annual Toys for Joys party. The growing popularity of this event appears to have moved the party from the Artist for Humanity building to the larger Black Falcon Cruise Terminal in South Boston. You can stay up to date with all the plans for this year’s party (their 5th anniversary) by liking T4J’s Facebook Page.
Mark your calendars – Saturday, December 14th
Enjoy this quick video from the 2012 party
Squatty Potty
Back in March I wrote a post, poking fun at an advertisement I’d seen for the Squatty Potty. Guess what was recently delivered to me by a chuckling smiling UPS delivery man.

Today’s lesson in learning how to speak BosTongue is keepah.

Used in a sentence: He is a keepah.

Richard Branson
I rarely talk about work, but every once in a while something happens that I want to share. Later today, I will see and possibly meet Sir Richard Branson – Founder of Virgin Group. He is a guest speaker at a program I am helping run. At this same event last year, I was able to meet and talk to our 2012 Keynote, President Bill Clinton.
Sometimes my job is pretty cool.
