JMG last week broke the story that Germany’s Athletes will wear the above rainbow-hued uniforms at the Sochi Olympics, but officials insist the design is not intended as a commentary on Russia’s anti-gay laws. Either way, I love it. I’d love to see more countries follow Germany’s lead. You can read the full story here in Der Spiegel (it is in English).
The Border Cafe is a local restaurant chain that first opened their doors in Harvard Square in 1987. The Tex-Mex and Cajun menu is very affordable, making it a popular destination for students. The atmosphere is very casual and the portions are quite generous as you can see by my glass of iced tea (below) which is so large you’ll definitely need to head to the bathroom at least once.
I’ll be the first to admit that New England will never be known for their Tex-Mex or Mexican cuisine so I’ll defer to food snobs to call me out on my lack of experience, but I’ve never had a bad meal here. The service is consistently prompt and the waitstaff is knowledgeable – making helpful suggestions. Our (complimentary) corn chips were served warm, our drinks brought over promptly and the food was damn good.
On this visit Sergio and I ordered a Chicken Burrito ($8) and Quesadilla w/ a side of homemade guacamole ($9). Both were served as requested and despite the very large portions, nearly finished. I had the quesadilla and had to pull back the tortilla to able to devour all the tasty melted cheese and veggies. I also ordered a side of black beans ($1) because they are so good here and ended up waddling out after I ate too much. While this particular location can be crazy during peak times, it remains a favorite location for quick, easy, cheap eats in Harvard Square and is a place I would recommend for a casual night out.

I love me some orange and I’m assuming you do to. Much thanks to Kenneth in the (212) for sharing this picture a week or two ago.
My connections to Brazil continue to grow stronger so I am only too happy to share what looks like a fun party that will take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil this Saturday, October 12th at the Music Hall. Are you in Brazil or do you have friends there? Please feel free to share.
Di Latte (Milk) features four DJs: Danny Verde from Italy, Edu Quintas from The Week, ROBIX from Rio de Janeiro and ALESS from Belo Horizonte.
Each year the makers of this calendar reach out to let me know when their new calendar is available. It has always given me a good laugh – who knew orthodox garb could be so interesting. Maybe this will give some of you ideas for Halloween costumes later this month.
You can purchase a copy of the 2014 Orthodox Wall Calendar here.
This is a brilliant spoof of Time Magazine’s notorious May 2012 breastfeeding cover. Somehow the Photoshopped heads of Tea Party wingnut Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and our sycophant Speaker of the House, John Boehner (R-OH) is both upsetting and spot on.
I thought after the Republican Party’s expectations were dashed in the 2012 elections they would move away from their racist tinged Tea Party extremes. After all it wasn’t their moderation that led them to lose their bid for President, control of the US Senate, and 8 seats (cutting into their majority control) in the US House of Representatives.
Last night The AIDS Action Committee hosted ARTcetera 2013 to a sold out crowd only eager to mingle and bid on art. This year’s ARTcetera eliminated the live auction from year’s past, but nobody seemed bothered as they continued to peruse and bid on the items in the silent auction.
This is one of the better run charitable events I attend. If you missed this year’s ARTcetera, you’ll have to mark your calendars for the next auction in October 2015. Much thanks to Sergio for his help photographing the event.

Earlier this summer I sat down and talked to Harry Collings (owner of the soon to open Back Bay Harry’s). At the time he had hoped they would be able to open by the end of September. Unfortunately the restaurant / bar has yet to open but the work inside is coming together and it appears if this location will be opening very soon. Last week the final remnants of Geoffrey’s Cafe came down and a new awning and sign was installed to the exterior.
Stay tuned for more to come shortly.
Earlier this summer the Imgur Photo Gallery called “Dancers Among Us” started to go viral. The photos from Jordan Matter are beautifully expressive and in my opinion humanize a style of dance that can at times seem out of reach and other worldly. Want to see more? Click here.
Sometimes just getting yourself out of bed is an accomplishment. Well done Tony.
Thanks to the generosity of my firm, I’m able to attend ARTcetera 2013 tonight in Boston. The funds from this event go to support The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. The event includes approximately 200 objects of art that may be bid upon in both silent and live auctions. It is an absolute blast, attracting an eclectic mix of art enthusiasts, artists, and supporters of the AIDS Action Committee. I’ve included a quick video from the last event that was held in 2011 to give you an idea of what one may expect from tonight’s program.
