Harvard Square nightlife

Guys DrinkingI can’t recall the last time I said this but last Saturday I grabbed my passport (sorry local joke guys) and headed over to Harvard Square, and I have to admit it was a blast. The next day while I was perusing the Boston Globe online I happened to see an article raving about the nightlife in Harvard Square.

So why is Harvard Square’s nightlife rebounding? According to The Boston Globe article it is due to a concerted effort to help it flourish (Hello Boston Mayoral candidates would you please take note?)

The city of Cambridge wants a more vibrant nightlife and are encouraging more live music venues and asking restaurants to stay open later. The city is also reviewing the current cap on liquor licenses and policies governing outdoor late night dining. Don’t believe me? Read the Boston Globe article, Harvard Square Gets Its Nightlife Groove Back.

Hello Boston – would you please take note?

Red Sox Nation

Red Sox FanAfter two heartbreaking seasons, the Boston Red Sox surprised the pundits and exceeded everyone’s expectations, ending the year with the best record in the American League and tied with St. Louis for the best record in all of Major League Baseball.

About an hour ago the Red Sox started their first playoff game. against Tampa Bay.  I am optimistically hopeful for another great play off season and am thankful to have the Red Sox as a distraction to the dumb asses in DC.

American politics: Learning from history

American PoliticsTo say I’m disappointed in our government in DC would be an understatement. Once upon a time, our politicians were articulate, thoughtful and offered hope. Calling each other names and seething with contempt for each other seems more like behavior exhibited on an elementary school yard playground than from adults expected to help solve real-world, complicated problems.

Restaurant review: Oak Long Bar + Kitchen

Fairmont Copley PlazaIn 2012 The Fairmont Copley and their restaurant, The Oak Long Bar + Kitchen, completed a $20 million remodeling and reopened to the public. A few months later, I provided my first review of Oak Long Bar + Kitchen in September 2012.

Earlier this month I found myself at the bar of this Back Bay gem and figured I’d see if the menu and cooking was as good as I recalled. The restaurant’s menu has changed as is so often the case and I was sad to see the tagliatelle dinner with braised ribs and lobster was no longer available. However the menu remains largely the same with flatbread options, several hearty main plates that range in price from $23 – $41 and a number of “snacks” or small plates from $8-$21.

Oak Long Bar + Kitchen BostonI started my dinner with the hearth baked bread $5.  The bread was extremely buttery and you could smell and taste the rosemary liberally sprinkled alongside pretzel salt which was delicious with my beer.

Oak Long Bar and Kitchen BostonI opted for a slightly healthier option, the Steak Salad $25, which was cooked as I asked. The presentation of the long stalks of romaine lettuce was prettier than my photo does justice, and the only disappointment was the accompanying bread that came with my salad.  My friend opted for the Steak Frites $41 but substituted his frites for a medley of summer vegetables. The over sized cast iron plate makes an impressive first impression. Fortunately, the meal lives up to the hype as my friend repeatedly mentioned how much he enjoyed his meal.

One year later and it appears that Oak Long Bar + Kitchen has proven that they are able to consistently serve a hungry public that is only too willing to step into this beautiful Back Bay restaurant.  Have not tried the Oak Long Bar + Kitchen or has it been a while? Give them a try, but reservations are recommended.

Today’s lesson: Know what you want

I love topsYou might think that this is obvious, but the reality is many people convince themselves that they really want something only to realize that once they achieve that goal, buy that product, marry that person of their dreams, etc… it isn’t what they want, like, or love.

Take a page out of my friend Jesse’s book and find out what you are really passionate about and love.  Everything else will work itself out – I promise.

BosGuy does the Donkey Show at Oberon

Oberon Theater Donkey ShowLast Saturday Sergio and I joined those crazy kids over at The Welcoming Committee (TWC) at The Donkey Show at the Oberon Theater in Harvard Square.  How would I describe this show? An absolute blast. The 90-minute show flew by so fast I couldn’t believe it was over and we stayed a bit longer to keep dancing to the porn-stached DJ who continued to play one disco classic after another.

I will admit going with TWC probably added an energy to our show that may be lacking on a random Saturday night (The Donkey Show takes place every Saturday), but it was still an absolute blast and something I’d encourage people to check out.Donkey Show at Oberon Theater

I’m shallow

Cowboy BathI’ll admit it – I’m pandering.  But I’d like everyone to know two things: first, I’ve never really had a thing for cowboys – even as a kid I was always cheering for the indians so it is clearly my appreciation for photography that is why I wanted to share this picture; and second, I’ve had this photo for evah… I mean DOMA hadn’t even been repealed so I think I’ve shown incredible restraint all things considered.

Boston Ballet 2013-2014 season

Ballet DancerTomorrow is opening night for Boston Ballet’s 2013-2014 season. If you’ve never gone to the ballet perhaps this image of a male ballet dancer will illustrate how –-um-– artistic ballet can be.

You may purchase tickets to a Boston Ballet performance here.

Paraty Brazil

Paraty BrazilPronounced Para-chee, this quiet coastal town just a few hours drive from Rio de Janeiro is where I will spend several relaxing days and nights after what I’m sure will be a fun week in Rio de Janeiro in late November / early December.

You may recall that last year’s trip to Brazil took me to Florianopolis or “Floripa” as Brazilians call it. I’ll have more to share about Paraty in the coming months and after I return but until then you can read about my trip to Florianopolis here:

London Villages by Zena Alkayat

London Villages by Zena AlkayatAre you planning a visit to London? Not long after guest blogger James H. submitted his post, 5 great gay date spots in London, Zena Alkayat’s book London Villages arrived at my house, and I couldn’t stop thumbing through it.

Tucked away, inside the massive city of London, are dozens of neighborhoods “villages” filled with charming local markets, restaurants, pubs and gardens that many tourists never get a chance to see. Divided into five categories: Central, North, South, East and West; each section describes a half dozen or more of these charming villages, including photos and images along with contact information for local markets, restaurants, pubs and gardens that many tourists never get a chance to see.

Boston Chocolate School a must try for chocoholics

Boston Chocolate SchoolThe third Saturday of every month The Boston Chocolate School (yes we even have a school for that here in Boston) hosts a 3 hour class that is the perfect gift for any chocoholic.

I attended September’s class with my good friend and fellow blogger, 40-Something Life, unsure of what to expect.  Our class was hosted by Chef Dorian (shown above with 40-something life blogger and yours truly). Dorian was the Season 2 winner of The Food Network show, Sweet Genius, and after taking his class, I can honestly say he’s also a comic genius.  His class is both entertaining and educational – this man is CRAZY about chocolate.

Boston Chocolate School making trufflesThe first half of the class, which takes place near Downtown Crossing in Boston, is spent learning about chocolate while sipping what might be some of the best hot chocolate in town. I learned things like the only 5 ingredients any chocolate should have:  cocoa liquor (ground cocoa beans), cocoa butter, sugar, soy lecithin and real vanilla. So simple really, but because some large recognizable brands like Hershey don’t use this and add other “stuff” they aren’t technically considered chocolate.

Boston Chocolate School box of trufflesWith the Fall in full swing and colder weather coming, this might make for the perfect Saturday activity if you have even a mild interest in chocolate. Certainly the entertainment value that Chef Dorian brings to the class cannot be stressed enough. Boston Chocolate School classes occur the 3rd Saturday of each month, with the next class on Saturday, October 19th.

More information about this can be found on their website, The Boston Chocolate School.
