US Open: Grigor Dimitrov

The US Open started this week, and I’m posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I’m featuring a Bulgarian player named Grigor Dimitrov. Currently ranked 57, Grigor lost in the first round to the extremely physical Frenchman, Gael Monfils. However, he’s still quite young at only 20 years of age and he has time to improve his game. Time will tell if he can, but in the interim, I enjoy watching this young man play.

What do you think about Grigor? If you’d like to find out more about him, you can link here. If you’d like to find out more about this year’s US Open you can visit the tournament’s official website,www.usopen.org.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome.   If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter. Leave them a nice comment and start following these guys.

WillFennellis the beauty/grooming editor for DNA magazine, owner of the Will and Peta skin clinic in Sydney Australia, author and blogger.Aussies may remember Will as the grooming guy on Aussie Queer Eye. I’ll remember him because he’s so damn sexy.He claims he also gives “the best ball wax ever”… the very thought horrifies me so I’m going to take him at his word. Look for his first book to be released later this year “Beauty Manual / Autobiography” A story of boy in a women’s world (the beauty business). Can’t get enough of this handsome guy from down under? In addition to stalking following him on Twitter you can check out his blog, www.willfennell.com.au#GroomingGuru

stekallee – Ste was born in Belgium, raised in Germany, but now calls the UK home and lives in Liverpool with his fiance, Paul. This guy has a heart of gold. Following in the footsteps of his mother, he works in autism care. Later next month he’ll be getting married (the precise term is registering as a civil partner – what a mouthful) and honeymooning with the love of his life, Paul who you can also follow on twitter @cheeky2xist. #HeartOfGoldIvanPutra – This 20-something born in Indonesia and raised in Houston, Texas is more than a handsome face. He’s currently in college studying Business and Marketing and a freelance model. He’ll be strutting his stuff for Danny Nguyen Couture in Houston later this month. If you are a modeling scout in Texas give Ivan a second look. #HandsomeTexan

US Open: Arnaud Clement

The US Open started on Monday in New York City, and I’m posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I’m featuring French player Arnaud Clement, a former top 10 player. Arnaud is one of the older players on the tour now that he’s in his early 30s and in recent years he’s had more success playing doubles although he and Lukas Dlouhy unfortunately lost in the Open’s first round this year.

Standing at just 5’8″, most players tower over this Frenchman. Despite his lack of stature, I think Arnaud looks like a handsome rogue and I love listening to him shouting in French… Even I can read lips that say “merde“. Considering how many people who read this blog like facial hair, I know Arnaud will be a popular choice.

If you’d like to find out more about this Frenchman you can link here. If you’d like to find out more about this year’s US Open you can visit the tournament’s official website, www.usopen.org.

The advantage of doing absolutely nothing

It seems to me that aside from health and happiness the thing people are most often short of is time. We make lists and check off each “to do”, and we schedule personal dates with friends and family much like business meetings; busily tapping these appointments into our iPhone, Droid or Blackberry.

As the average work day / week encroaches into what was traditionally personal or family time, it seems like we have started to adopt behaviors from our work life for our personal lives. I see many friends killing themselves to make the most of their time out of the office; scheduling every minute to run errands, see friends, etc…

So here we are in the midst of a long holiday weekend in the US. The weather in Boston is spectacular – warm but not hot, sunny but with puffy white clouds and I’m enjoying doing absolutely nothing. My major achievement of the day has been devouring a hot fudge brownie sundae at PICCO – a local restaurant all of two blocks from my home.

Have you scheduled yourself into oblivion this weekend? Is your check list of errands so long that you’ll need all three days to get through everything? I hope not because sometimes doing absolutely nothing ensures you’ll appreciate the time most.

US Open: James Blake

The US Open started earlier this week in New York City, and I’m posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I’m featuring American tennis player and native New Yorker, James Blake. Unfortunately he lost to David Ferrer in 3-sets on Friday. However, he’s still quick and has a killer forehand, making him really fun to watch when his game is on.

I’ve long thought James Blake is one of the most handsome active players and I love this playful promotional photo for evian water. If you’d like to find out more about Blake you can link here. For more information about this year’s US Open you can visit the tournament’s official website,www.usopen.org.

US Open: Juan Martin Del Potro

The US Open started on Monday in New York City, and in honor of the Open, I’m posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I’m featuring the super tall Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro (nicknamed Delpo) who stands 6’6″. Currently ranked 18 in the world, he beat fellow countryman Diego Junqueira today to move on to the third round. I don’t expect Delpo to win the Open but he is a tough competitor. I love this photo of him tossing his shirt into the crowd. Not sure I’d fit into something that can fit his frame, but wouldn’t it be cool to have?

If you’d like to find out more about Del Potro you can link here. For more information about this year’s US Open you can visit the tournament’s official website,www.usopen.org.

2011-2012 season for local Boston theater companies

In September many of Boston’s local theater companies begin their 2011-2012 season. Many of these companies provide a more intimate setting than their counterparts in Boston’s theater district; and prices for shows are certainly more affordable. Here are a few local theater companies I hope you’ll consider supporting.

American Reportory Theater (A.R.T.) is technically in Cambridge and affiliated with Harvard University, but I’d be remiss not to include it. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is currently playing and received strong reviews. I’ve yet to see The Donkey Show in their Oberon theater, which is based on Shakespeare’s Midsummer Nights Dream and has performances every Saturday. To see the full 2011-2012 performance calendar or to purchase tickets, visit their website at, www.americanrepertorytheater.org.

Company One is a resident theater company that shares space at the Boston Center for the Arts and is known for embracing innovative and socially provocative performances. Their 13th season will begin in October with In the Red and Brown Water. You can see the rest of their 2011-2012 line up or purchase tickets on their website, www.companyone.org.
Huntington Theatre in residence at Boston University with theater space on Huntington Avenue as well as in the South End at the Calderwood Pavilion has been providing Boston with excellent options to shows in the Theater District. A few years back I was able to see Nathan Lane perform in a production of Butley. Their 2011-2012 season starts in two weeks with Candide. More information about tickets is available on their website, www.huntingtontheatre.org.
Lyric Stage Company of Boston consistently has high quality performances. Last spring their production of Blithe Spirit was one of my favorites. Like many of the smaller theater company’s there is not a bad seat in the house so to speak. Their season starts this weekend with Big River. Other notable shows included in their 2011-2012 season include Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Avenue Q. You can read more and purchase tickets from their website, lyricstage.com.

SpeakEasy Stage is a well-respected local theater company now entering it’s 20th season. I have probably seen more productions from the SpeakEasy Stage than any other local theater company. Their 2011 season starts in just a couple weeks with Next Fall a Tony nominee for best play, but I’m intrigued to see their production of Xanadu later in the season. To see the complete line up for their 2011-2012 season and to purchase tickets to upcoming shows at www.speakeasystage.com.
Support Boston’s local theater scene and reserve a couple of tickets to a show this September. I promise, you will enjoy yourself.

Dinner w/ Opus One winemaker Michael Silacci

Last week I was invited to join my friend at 40-something life blog for a dinner with Opus One winemaker Michael Silacci and France Posener, the winery’s East Coast Sales representative at one of Boston’s premiere restaurants, L’Espalier. I loved the Summer Degustation which we ordered. It included 4 savory courses, followed by their grand fromage, signature sorbet and dessert. All told the 6 plates each accompanied by a different wine took us approximately 5 hours to eat – if you’d like to read in more detail what we ate, please link to my friend Tracey’s blog, here. However, I would like to write a bit about the dining experience, starting with the exceptional service and attention we received due to Michael Silacci’s presence. The chef and proprietor of L’Espalier, Frank McClelland came over to meet us personally and chatted briefly with France and Michael. After seeing so many raging chefs on these quasi-reality cooking shows, chef McClelland’s calm, polite demeanor was a welcome dose of reality. We were also well tended by the sommelier, Erich Schliebe, who poured a new wine with each course and freely joined in our ongoing dinner repartee. Lastly, the restaurant’s Captain, Daniel Floyd, provided us with the most attentive service I can recall in recent memory. I know this was all for the benefit of the well respected winemaker to my right, but I enjoyed being privy to the opportunity.

One of the reasons Michael Silacci and France Posener were in Boston was to premier the Opus One 2008 vintage. It was pretty cool to be among the first to try this new vintage. They brought a bottle of the award winning 2007 and the new 2008 and poured both for us to try side-by-side. The picture to the left is of last year’s vintage. Between courses and wine, conversation flowed easily from start to finish. Michael is quite interesting and is equally comfortable talking about subject matter completely unrelated to his areas of interest or expertise. He is an attentive listener and has a dry wit. One of the things I really enjoyed learning about my dinner companion is that he’s allergic to chocolate – it causes him to sneeze. He joked the better the chocolate the more he sneezes. I was able to witness the reaction first hand when dessert was served and it caused all of us to laugh (again).

Dinner was filled with both personal stories from each of us as well as some interesting insights into the Opus One winery. I started my dinner not knowing the two guests who were treating my friend and me to this decadent dinner but left with a deeper appreciation for the work and attention they bring to their wines as well as some interesting insights into what makes them tick.
Should you be interested in visiting the beautiful Opus One estate and winery, make a reservation today here.

US Open: Feliciano Lopez

The US Open started this week in New York City. In honor of the Open, I’m posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I’m featuring the first of what will be several Spanish tennis players. Feliciano Lopez (ranked 25 in the world) has made it into the second round of the US Open. Even if you don’t know much about Lopez game, I can guarantee you he’s worth watching. He’s quick and like most of the Spanish players – very passionate about his game. Just like Ginepri (who I featured yesterday), I think Lopez might have a larger following if he was allowed to play his matches without a shirt.

If you’d like to find out more about Feliciano Lopez you can link here. For more information about this year’s US Open you can visit the tournament’s official website, www.usopen.org.

Dishing some South End restaurant gossip

There’s been a lot of whispering about several high profile vacant restaurant properties in the South End getting snapped up. While the rumors are still swirling, I figured I would share what I’ve heard in recent weeks.

CONFIRMED This has already been reported on other blogs, but it is worth repeating that the SouthEnd Buttery will be opening a second location this fall at 37 Clarendon Street in the space previously occupied by Tadpole. Thank you Richard for taking back a bit of the South End. I love the fact that a former toy store will be converted to a coffee shop. That area has been under served ever since the Nashoba Brook cafe and bakery closed on Columbus in 2008.

BUTTERY UPDATE: The original location on the corner of Union Park and Shawmut will temporarily close once the second location opens to undergo a remodeling to better use the space in the cafe.

CONFIRMED I first commented on the space previously occupied by Rocca at 500 Harrison Avenue this past May. While negotiations between GTI Properties and The Aquitaine Group took longer than expected, a deal was signed recently and the successful restaurant company which already owns and operates 4 South End properties will open their first Italian restaurant in the space formerly known as Rocca. There are no details to share about the name or exact opening, but a complete remodeling will occur. Look for the restaurant to open in early 2012.

RUMORED The space previously occupied by Pho Republique at 1415 Washington Street was of interest to neighboring Foodies Market so they could expand, but renovations may be more than the owners are willing to take on since construction will require significant work to bring this property up to code. However, the optimist in me still hopes if Foodies doesn’t snap up this space then someone else will come in, remodel and open a great restaurant – preferably one with a fun lounge.

RUMORED Space previously occupied by banq and Ginger Park at 1375 Washington Street is of interest to Brian Piccini owner of dbar in Dorchester and Deuxave in the Back Bay. Word on the street is this would be a high end steak house. However, nothing has been signed and negotiations continue.

Have you heard anything about these or other properties? Let this South End foodie know.

US Open: Robby Ginepri

The US Open started on Monday in New York City. In honor of the Open, I’m posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play at the US Open.

Today, I’m featuring my first American tennis player, Robby Ginepri. He has moved on to the second round at the US Open but is a long shot. However, I’ve always thought this guy not only has a great game, but is easy on the eyes. I think most will agree that tennis might have a larger following if guys like Ginepri were allowed to play matches without a shirt (who needs those pesky sponsors anyway).

If you’d like to find out more about Robby Ginepri you can link here. For more information about this year’s US Open you can visit the tournament’s official website, www.USOpen.org.

Moving day in Boston

I was once told that 1 out of every 4 apartment leases in Boston starts on September 1st. This may or may not be true, but what is true is most of Boston and it’s surrounding suburbs will be in gridlock starting today and much of the day on September 1st as tens of thousands move into their new apartments.

The large number of September 1st rentals is a result of the college population moving back to Boston and getting ready to start the new academic year. I cannot think of another large metropolitan area that is so significantly influenced by the local college population. Within the metropolitan area there are more than 100 colleges and universities, and according to Wikipedia there are more than 250,000 college students in Boston and Cambridge alone. If that figure is correct then that means college students comprise more than 35% of the population.

Despite the fact that parking will soon become near impossible with tens of thousands of college students (many for the first time) moving into Boston, I look forward to their return. The soul of Boston is tied to the students who come here and make it their home (at least for awhile). Its partly why Boston remains one of the youngest cities in the US despite the Northeast having one of the oldest populations. The students and those who stay after graduating shape and influence this city as much today as the immigrants who are a part of this city’s history or the large employers who have helped draw people here with good jobs.

Boston Trivia: name the college / university shown in the 2nd photo

2011 US Open: Dmitry Tursunov

The US Open started on Monday in New York City. In honor of the Open, I’m posting a handsome male tennis player each day the Open is being played.

Today, I’m featuring Dmitry Tursunov from Russia who is currently ranked 43 in the world. Sadly this handsome Russian is not participating in the US Open this year.

If you’d like to find out more about Dmitry Tursunov you can link here. For more information about this year’s US Open you can visit the tournament’s official website, www.USOpen.org.

Red Sox and Yankees play this week

The Boston Red Sox start a 3-game series with the New York Yankees tonight. This is the last time the two teams will face each other in Boston during the regular season. Last week I wrote a post, Boston Sports Bars, and I’m pretty sure that all of these locations will be busy through out the 3-game series. Will you be watching these games? If so, where?
