All over the world we have seen videos of people using music to uplift spirits and to make people feel connected. Shelbie Rassler, a composition major at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, put a spin on that idea, bringing together over 70 of her fellow musicians together virtually for a rendition of “What the World Needs Now is Love” by Burt Bacharach. The result is a unique spin on a classic song, with video of each of the musicians playing or singing their parts, safely socially distanced, but brought together by the music. The credits at the end are accompanied by multiple dancers. Enjoy the video and much thanks to Shelbie and her classmates for a beautiful video.
Much thanks to my sister for sharing this local story with me earlier this week. You can read more about this story on Boston.com, here.
Leonard Bernstein spent much of his career as the music director of the New York Philharmonic and went on to score music for West Side Story, Peter Pan, Candide, and On the Waterfront as well as many others. Although he was married, he ultimately came out in the early 1970s when he was in his 50s. The above photo is of Bernstein and Michael Tilson Thomas in 1974. You can read more about this famous American composer in a feature post by Gay Today, Leonard Bernstein: A divided life.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. I don’t know much about Lex other than the fact that he is handsome, a Dad and knows how to take a great photograph. The amateur athlete has given a few interviews where he talks about how much he loves being a father and is married (spouse name IDK), but other than that I know very little. His IG account is full of selfies, professional photos and more than a workout and gym pictures.
I’m curious what (if any) tie he may have to Massachusetts, because one of the IG accounts he links to in his bio is for a licensed hemp farm in Southeastern Mass that produces and sells CBD health products.

This past Saturday the city of Boston created an online directory called “Support Boston Restaurants” to let patrons know which restaurants remain open, their hours of operation, menus, how to order as well as delivery and pick up instructions. The directory has more than 200 restaurants and is organized by neighborhood and also includes some Cambridge restaurants.
As we all hunker down and do our best to help flatten the curve, I’m putting my weekly “what’s happening” post on hiatus and suggesting a prolonged “Netflix-and-Chill” approach while we ride out COVID-19. Below I’ve shared some of the programming I watched this week. Share what you’re watching in the comments section. I’d welcome your suggestions.
This week I watched:
Spencer Confidential Netflix film starringMark Wahlberg The movie is entertaining if you like the police detective genre.
Fourth Man Out is a comedy about a 24 year old mechanic who finally comes out to his best friends. It’s cute and funny and was a good 90-minute escape.
The Great British Baking Show (Season 5) w/ Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. I can’t seem to get into the newer episodes w/ Prue Leith replacing Mary Berry as a judge and the new hosts Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig just don’t seem as fun to watch as Sue Perkins and Mel Giedrovc.
What have you been watching? Leave a few suggestions in the comments section for me and other readers who may be looking for something new to watch.
