How to survive a Boston winter
This is the fifth and final post in my 2014 “How to survive a Boston winter” series. If you missed the previous posts you can read them here: BosGuy Tip #1: Book a vacation now, BosGuy Tip #2: Find a cuddle buddy, BosGuy Tip #3: Chocolate and BosGuy Tip #4: Visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
BosGuy Tip #5: Embrace the winter. The axiom, if you can’t beat’em join’em applies here. If you live in Boston you will inevitably have to make peace with the fact that winter is here to stay so take advantage of the many activities available to you. This year the city is opening more public ice skating rinks and winter activities such as cross-country and down hill skiing are readily available.
Make plans now to get tickets and check out Stowe, Vermont’s Winter Rendez-Vous, January 21-25. If skiing isn’t your thing, head up for the weekend and skip the slopes. You can still partake in all the apres-ski activities such as hot tubbing and cocktailing.
Please Master by Allen Ginsberg
Probably the most erotic poem I ever read is Allen Ginsberg’s poem, Please Master. I’m fairly certain nearly anyone who reads this aloud will give pause at certain lines and be left blushing. This could possibly be the most explicit poem ever written so beware, but if intrigued you may read the full poem here.

A wild night in Austin with Brian and Laura
After spending a few days in Dallas, TX for work I was able to hop a flight down to Austin, TX to visit Brian and Laura. Brian and I have been friends since elementary school and were roommates for about five years in Boston in my late 20s and early 30s. He moved to San Francisco where he met his wife, Laura, who is in the photo with me, wearing this ridiculous, over sized foam cowboy hat. A few years after they met and married they moved to Austin, TX where Laura had family.
We had a fantastic dinner at Searsucker. Sorry, no pictures or food reviews since it was all about drinking red wine, enjoying each other’s company and getting caught up. My last visit to Austin was back in January 2010 when I flew down with a group of friends to surprise Brian for his 40th birthday, which I wrote about in my post Brian’s birthday party in Austin.
Here is a photo of Laura (without the cowboy hat) and Brian from my first visit to Austin, TX back in 2009.
How to survive a Boston winter
For the past few years, I’ve been writing posts in the fall to help people prepare for the oncoming winter. Earlier this week I shared these tips: BosGuy Tip #1: Book a vacation now, BosGuy Tip #2: Find a cuddle buddy and BosGuy Tip #3: Chocolate.
BosGuy Tip #4: Visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Visit this gorgeous museum in February and March. The garden always has vibrant flowers, flowing water and grass. The combined affect awakens your senses and can quickly chase away the winter blues.
After you leave the museum, I suggest heading to the Back Bay or South End where you can purchase a delicious cup of hot chocolate (see tip #3) and talk about everything you saw at the Gardner Museum.
Boyfriends Friday night
Boyfriends is a gay dance night at the Milky Way in Jamaica Plain that is hosted on the 3rd Friday of each month. VJ Sean Johnson programs the one-of-a-kind live visuals, and joining resident DJ Brent Covington this month is guest DJ James Derek Dwyer from the melodic house night Plastique and the weekly Technique.
Check out this friendly, no attitude crowd at the Milky Way, 284 Amory Street, Jamaica Plain from 10:00 pm – 1:00 am.
How to survive a Boston winter
For the past few years, I’ve been writing posts in the fall to help people prepare for the oncoming winter. Earlier this week I shared two tips: BosGuy Tip #1: Book a vacation now and BosGuy Tip #2: Find a cuddle buddy.
BosGuy Tip #3: Chocolate. For those who don’t know me, I think chocolate is the cure for everything, and when the winter blues come – nothing fends them off better than a deliciously rich mug of steaming hot chocolate. Boston has a number of truly delicious purveyors of hot chocolate. Turn it into an afternoon activity with a good friend if you are still on the hunt for securing a cuddle buddy (Unsure what I’m talking about? Read Tip #2.)
I know who makes my favorite cup of hot chocolate in Boston, and I visit them regularly in the winter. Do you have a favorite selected? Do your research – don’t waste your money and calories on inferior hot chocolate.
Restaurant review: Prospect in San Francisco
Prospect is a casual dining restaurant that first opened in the summer of 2010. It is located on the corner of Folsom and Spear Street approximately one block from the waterfront. I opted to try this sleek looking neighborhood restaurant because it won San Francisco Magazine’s 2013 Best Destination Burger.
The bar menu is comprised mostly of easy bites like cheese plate, hot wings and fried shishito peppers. The full menu includes salads, seafood and meats ranging in price from $14-$45 with most items ranging from $21-$32.
I started my meal with the bar menu’s, spicy ceviche ($10). Prospect’s ceviche includes chunks fresh fish, avocado and tomato as well as a bit of heat from peppers that nicely mingle with the citrus and fresh corn tortilla chips. I devoured this with my beer while people watching from the bar.
Following the ceviche, I had high hopes for the burger and was not disappointed. The Prospect Burger ($16.50 with fries) comes on a delicious buttered and lightly toasted bun with a thick green tomato and lettuce. The burger is accompanied by thick cut and salted french fries that were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Service at the bar, despite a busy crowd, was flawless. The entire staff referred to me by my name despite only introducing myself once to the bartender who took my beer order and they made me feel welcome without pestering me.
Sky Mall presents the Sippy Wine Cup
With all my recent traveling I couldn’t help but peruse the summer issue of the Sky Mall catalog that they cram into each airline seat. The item that caught my eye most recently is the “Top Selling” Sippy Wine Cup that retails for $19.95.
The catalog writes, “When standing and noshing, juggling a glass of wine can be challenging. Enter this acrylic wine glass with a no-spill sippy lid. Ingenious!” Apparently readers agree because the Sippy Wine Cup has received four stars.
Call me old fashioned, but I’d prefer to leave the sippy cups to small children learning to drink.
How to survive a Boston winter
For the past few years, I’ve been writing posts in the fall to help people prepare for the oncoming winter and yesterday I shared my first tip, BosGuy Tip #1: Book a vacation now.
BosGuy Tip #2: Find a cuddle buddy. Since we can’t all afford to fly away every week, one needs a more practical if not economical option as well. For this reason I strongly recommend identifying a cuddle buddy.
Not only can this help keep you warm during those colder months, but it has a number of other benefits that I don’t care to get into detail on this blog but probably are evident to my readers. Summer is now over and hibernation is far more fun (not to mention warmer) with another.
