30 years ago: Like a Prayer by Madonna

Few things can make me feel older than stumbling upon anniversaries like this. On Friday, March 3, 1989 (thirty years ago – gulp), Madonna released the lead single “Like A Prayer” from her fourth album by the same name. The CD wouldn’t be released until later that month on the 21st. I can assure you I was at Strawberry Records that day picking up the CD scented with patchouli oils infused in the packaging to simulate church incense.

Scruffy Sunday

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. To mix things up, I’ve included a decidedly provocative riddle to see if you can come up with the correct answer. I’ll confirm answers later so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away.

This week’s brain teaser:
A man leaves home. Turns left three times. Sees a man in a mask. Runs away.
What’s going on?

Boston Ballet presents Full on Forsythe

boston arts, boston danceThe Boston Ballet is more than halfway through a five year relationship with  William Forsythe, a choreographer who has been compared to Balanchine and Graham. His upcoming show, which opens a week from today on Thursday, February 4th promises to entice with an unorthodox soundtrack pulled from today’s pop, dance and R&B, featuring music from Khalid to Barry White. Check out the brief clip below to give you an idea of what to expect.

Boston Ballet presents Full on Forsythe
March 7 – 17 at the Boston Opera House
Tickets and More Information Here

Past productions have left me absolutely breathless watching what always seems to me to be innovative choreography and dancing you might not expect to see at the ballet. Their latest collaboration with Forsythe is appropriately called Full on Forsythe and while Sergio and I cannot attend opening night, I’m going to try and pick up tickets before the show closes on Sunday, March 17 and I would encourage you to do exactly the same thing.

Vintage gay

Any clue when this photo may have been taken? The car in the distance makes me think possibly the 1940s but I’m not quite sure. There is something very attractive about the guy on the left.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

This week on Instagram: thesimplegentleman

handsome, fashion, the simple gentleman, larry limThis week I’m featuring a men’s lifestyle Instagram account. Larry Lim who splits his time between Brisbane and Melbourne, Australia, takes beautiful photos of him in his surroundings. Some of my favorite photos are of him strolling down the streets of Melbourne (one of my favorite cities). Larry has a sophisticated sense of style that seems very accessible. If you’re looking for more than just a pretty face (he happens to have that as well) and have an appreciation for fashion, I’d definitely suggest giving his account a closer look.

Chilacates brings Mexican street food to the South End

Source: Chilacates Instagram

Have you heard? Last week Chilacates opened their fifth location here in the South End at 275 Shawmut Avenue, in the space formerly occupied by the Wholy Grain Cafe. The local chain which first opened in 2015 in Jamaica Plain has quickly expanded to Chestnut Hill, Mission Hill and now here in the South End.

I’ve now visited three times and the food is fresh, flavorful and affordable. Chilacates has completely transformed the space. The back patio is now gone but some space is available for informal dining and in nicer weather their front patio will be popular but the bulk of their customers are ordering take out.

The family owned business is a welcome addition to the South End and joins a growing number of fast casual dining restaurants that have opened south of Tremont Street over the past year. Chilacates South End is  open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Starting at 9 a.m. this weekend the South End location will serve brunch.
