When was your gay adolescence?

Have you heard of the movie Beginners directed by Mike Mills and starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer? The movie is based on Mike Mill’s real life and his relationship with his Dad who at the ripe age of 70 (and 6-mos after his wife’s passing) reveals that he’s gay. The movie chronicles the father’s exuberant embracing of his ‘new gay life’ and Mike’s relationship with his Dad as well as his new girlfriend.

It got me to thinking when I first came out in my late 20s and the ‘exuberance’ or rush that I felt. I could totally relate to this 70 year old man played by Christopher Plummer. Watching an interview with Mike Mills, he referred to the phenomenon as a second or ‘gay adolescence’, which I thought was a perfect term. For many people who come out later in life it does seem like they go through a second adolescence filled with boy crushes, drama and a lot of emotional energy.

Regardless of whether you’ve heard the term second adolescence or gay adolescence. Did you come out after your teenage years? And if so, did you also enjoy an intense second ‘gay adolescence’? Do tell…

The handsome guy posted at the beginning of the post has nothing to do with the movie but would be just the kind of guy who would have stopped me dead in my tracks. I’ve been looking for an excuse to post this picture and it seems that although my ‘gay adolescence’ is some years behind me now; some things never go away. I like that I remain a bit boy crazy.

Know your gay history w/ Varla Jean Merman

Varla is the bastard, love child of Ernest Borgnine and Ethel Merman and one of my favorite drag queens. Every year she has one of the best shows in Provincetown. If you won’t be able to make it to Ptown this year, you can see a collection of her videos on her YouTube channel.

A few years ago Varla created a video called Varla Jean Merman’s Stonewall for the gay cable TV channel, Logo. Since its Pride Month, I thought I’d share this entertaining video for all those unfamiliar with how Pride came to be celebrated in the month of June. Apologies that the resolution of this video isn’t better.

AIDS Walk Boston – Sunday June 5th

AIDS is the leading cause of death for people in MA (ages of 25-44)
Thank goodness for The AIDS Action Committee which hosts AIDS Walk Boston each year. Its too easy to forget and sometimes too uncomfortable to remember the legacy of AIDS. Its like an ugly blemish you want to hide and forget about. In the 80s while tens of thousands of people were afflicted with AIDS / HIV our government was too squeamish to provide either the support services or educate people on how to protect themselves. Now some 30 years later we know better but AIDS remains and continues to spread. Betty Byrnes a long time AIDS activist and mother reminds us why its important and how we can help make a difference.

OldManSearch on twitter

Recently my brother-in-law brought to my attention the twitter handle, OldManSearch. This is absolutely hilarious. The twitter handle sort of explains why the tweets are so random and interesting.

The profile reads: My dad is 81 years old. I’m teaching him how to use the internet. I told him twitter was how to search things on Google. These tweets are what he’s searching.

The tweets are quite random both in subject matter and frequency but I thought I would share a recent example to provide some insight and humor.

Guerrilla Queer Bar and First Friday options for you

No plans this weekend or looking to try something different? The first Friday of each month Boston Guerrilla Queer Bar overtakes a traditionally straight bar and fills it with gay men. Since the Boston bar scene can sometimes seem somewhat restricting, Boston Guerrilla Queer Bar gives Boston gay men and women the opportunity to break out of their routine. Curious which bar will be overtaken on Friday? Check in on the group’s facebook page or its website, www.BostonGuerrilla.com

Is the bar scene not really your thing? Looking for something to do that won’t break the bank? More of the Artsy-Fartsy variety? Then come over to my neighborhood in Boston’s South End and join the thousands of others who will participate in First Friday. This event which runs from 5:00pm – 9:00pm at 450 Harrison Avenue allows you to walk through the many, many working art studios, view art and artisan crafts and chat with the artists. Its a great way to mingle and meet people and after you are done, there are literally a half dozen or more excellent restaurant options within 2-3 blocks to either grab dinner or enjoy some light bites while sipping your favorite beverage. Friday’s forecast is low-to-mid 70s and clear skies so it should be a beautiful night to stroll about.

My summer beer

I’m addicted to Peak Organic Brewery’s Summer Session. Peak is a small craft brewing company out of Portland, Maine. They claim to be dedicated to making delicious, handcrafted ales.

Peak describes this brew as a traditional summer wheat beer that marries a West Coast pale ale. I’m not normally a huge wheat beer fan so the marriage to a traditional West Coast pale ale must be what makes me like it so much. Where can you find this brewery’s tasty delights? According to their website, Cambridge Common serves this, but I purchased a 6-pack from Whole Foods on River Street in Cambridge. Sam Maden – A GLBT ally who won’t be ignored

With summer so close, bullying in schools may not seem as pressing, but that’s not how Sam Maden, a 12 year old from Nashua, NH sees it. This young man has started a petition asking the Boston Red Sox to make an “It Gets Better” video. Apparently the idea came after his 43 year old uncle Chris died unexpectedly. Chris had given Sam a necklace from the Trevor Project, and according to Sam’s mother, Sam wears it every day in memory of his uncle.

Looking to local sports heroes to speak up for LGBT youth and to end bullying seems like a brilliant idea considering the lingering reputation of homophobia linked to many sports organizations. I don’t know about you but I take great heart that such a young man can be so passionate about such a worthwhile cause. Who knows if the Red Sox will heed Sam’s petition but I would certainly appreciate it if you would help spread the word and help Sam’s wish come true.

Benny Feilhaber Brazilian soccer player & lip sync ingenue

Benny Feilhaber is a 26 year old soccer player for the New England Revolution. He was born in Brazil and raised mostly in the US and is currently on the cover of the Improper Bostonian. However, if you’re not particularly interested in reading the Soroff interview, you can check out this funny music video he created of the Chris Brown / Jordin Sparks song No Air.

Apparently he created the video for a friend as a joke, but it went viral so after initially being embarrassed about the incident (at least according to the interview) he’s come to laugh it off and embrace it. Either way it certainly “ups” his cute factor and makes me like this very handsome midfielder even more. I especially like the goofy faces he makes at the start of the video. I’m a fan of Twitter. I love how quick and easy it is to use and connect with people. Another perk is what I’ll refer to as the “Men of Twitter” since there are so many handsome guys. Adding to their attraction is the fact they only talk in 140 characters.

French Open

The French Open (one of the four tennis majors) started earlier this week. This year’s tournament has proven to have its share of drama and upsets in the first week; notably the Women’s number 1 being knocked out in the third round by the number 28 seed.

Even if the sport of tennis alludes you, the producers of The French Open have done a superb job of showing off how beautiful the city of Paris is with stunning video of the city. And many in the men’s draw can only be described as distractingly handsome. Here are a few who you may not be familiar with but are both talented tennis players in this year’s French Open and êtes beau (as the French would say).

Travel reviews

I record many of my travel experiences (flights, hotel stays, etc) on my blog as well as a few travel sites, which I use when planning personal trips in the United States and abroad. I’ve come to rely on these tools, by identifying travelers with similar likes and interests, and I follow their reviews when I’m looking to visit a new destination.

Earlier this month I was in San Francisco. After returning home, I posted a review of my stay at the Fairmont San Francisco, on my blog and a couple of travel sites. I then promoted my review on twitter and facebook to let people know my thoughts. If you travel frequently, you may want to consider doing the same. In part, your active profile will tip off savvy properties that someone with a potentially large audience is coming for a stay and they may go the extra mile as the Fairmont did for me.
