DotBlock gets approval from BPDA

Despite some opposition by residents, a hearing at the BPDA earlier this month to approve the “DotBlock”. The project was  approved to build a mixed-use development that looks to transform a collection of vacant parcels located at the juncture of Dorchester’s Savin Hill, Jones Hill, and Meeting House Hill neighborhoods. The development will include approximately 488 residential units; a mix of apartments and condos, across five mixed-use buildings. DotBlock will also include approximately 23,000 square feet of retail with underground parking for 360 cars. Among DotBlock’s residential amenities will be a pool and fitness facility and around 15,000 sf of green space.

The parcels on which DotBlock will be built front onto Pleasant Street, Hancock Street and Dorchester Avenue, three major Dorchester streets. The DotBlock site is located steps to Savin Hill Station on the MBTA Red Line.

Big Brothers shortage: Consider being a mentor

As a former Big Brother I can attest to how wonderful this organization is and how much good can come out of signing up to be a Big Brother. While I hope that I helped make a difference with the 12 year old I was matched up with for two years (we’ve lost touch in the years that followed), I got more out of the experience than I ever bargained and would recommend men in their 20s and 30s in particular to consider giving of their time as a Big Brother.

In case you are not familiar, the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay is to partner with under-resourced families to provide their children with transformational, one-to-one professionally-supported relationships with caring adult mentors, so that their children will thrive. Unfortunately, according to a JP news article, there are more than 200 children  waiting to be matched with mentors.

If you are interested in learning more about how to become a mentor, visit their website at, www.bbbsmb.org.

Boston restaurant patios now open for patrons

Lately, it seems that we’ve had more than our share of overcast and rainy days, but as the saying goes, April showers – brings May flowers. However, there are a few sunny days expected in the coming week so I thought I should share a great blog post that the folks over at EaterBoston published last month and which they will continue to update that shares restaurants that have opened their patios.

If you’re like me, you love eating and drinking outside but unless you’ve traveled it has probably been several months since you’ve last enjoyed dining al fresco. Check out which restaurant patios are currently open by visiting here.

Changes proposed for Uber or Lyft rides to Logan Airport

Travel, air travel, BostonRight now, if you use a ride sharing app to catch a flight leaving Logan airport you’re dropped off right in front of your terminal, but last week Massport unveiled a plan that would redirect where ride-sharing drivers can drop off and pick up passengers (and of course potentially raising their airport fee to $5.00).

According to Massport figures, last year more than 5 million trips were made by cars driving out of the airport empty after dropping off passengers. The changes suggested are aimed at cutting that number by 30% while at the same time, by centralizing a drop off / pick up area (currently proposed to be at the central parking garage), decrease wait times for passengers and encourage more ride sharing drivers to stay at the airport to pick up customers before leaving.

Nothing has been confirmed as yet. You can read the full article here.

New jazz bar will open in Dudley Square

One of my favorite historic neighborhoods in Boston is Dudley Square. This part of Boston was a vibrant community in the 1800s for wealthy Bostonians and later became a shopping hub and home to a large Jewish community. By the start of the 20th century, demographics changed once again and it became an important neighborhood for Boston’s African American community. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. worked as a minister at Boston’s Twelfth Baptist Church in Dudley Sq. when he lived in Boston.

Unfortunately, the neighborhood fell on hard times after WWII, and it wasn’t until the 21st century when city government started to reinvest in this neighborhood . A recent sign that this neighborhood is on the upswing was news that musician William Banfeld – a Berklee College of Music professor – will be opening a large cafe in Dudley Square’s Bolling Building that will include live jazz, dancing and theater. I love this neighborhood and will definitely check out the yet-to-be-named jazz bar and restaurant after it opens for business.

Seaport / North Station ferry service is a go

boston harbour, boston skylineIn November I wrote about a potential new ferry service that was being pitched to help shuttle commuters between North Station and the Seaport. Earlier this month, several employers notified their employees that starting in mid-January the service would begin thanks to their support in underwriting the cost of the service; at this point it appears the service will be free to those employees but it is not clear if the service will be available to the general public.

The service will be managed by the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) and will take 18 minutes, running between North Station’s Lovejoy Wharf (by the Converse HQ) and Fan Pier (by the ICA Boston). Ferries will operate every 20 minutes Monday – Friday in the morning between 6:20AM – 9:40AM and in the afternoon / evening between 3:20PM – 7:00PM.

1/11/19 UPDATE: Ferry Service originally scheduled to begin the week of January 14th has been pushed back to start in early February due to ongoing work on the Lovejoy Wharf.

The ferries will have an indoor capacity for 92-passengers and climate control to make the commute as comfortable as possible.

Found Boston Common hotel: For the budget conscious traveler

boston hotel, budget travelIt’s no secret that hotels are expensive in Boston but one week after the South End’s newest hotel The Revolution opened, another hotel targeting the budget conscious-traveler with an eye on European tourists and Millennials has opened; this time in Bay Village / Theater District.

Found Boston Common has just opened in the building formerly known as the Milner Hotel at 78 Charles Street South. The new hotel chain with hotels in Chicago, DC and San Diego targets budget conscious travelers and has plans to open in six more cities by 2020. The building which dates back to the late 19th century when it first opened as the Sumner Hotel, is marketing itself as a “micro hotel” with 66 private and 2 shared hotel rooms. The building has been completely remodeled with two lounge areas where travelers can gather, offering an affordable, social, stylish place for travelers in a prime location of the city. boston hotel, budget travel The decor could be described as minimalistic with an ivory and dark blue color scheme, dark herringbone floors, and walnut accents. However, the most amazing thing about this new hotel is that nightly rates start at $39.

You can learn more about Boston’s newest hotel by visiting their website or liking their Facebook page.

Boston real estate: $30,000 rent and a $45million condo

boston real estateWhile Boston is not as expensive as Manhattan or San Francisco, the cost of living and price of real estate remains a problem but that’s not an issue for the people who recently rented a three-bedroom penthouse at the Millennium Tower for $30,000 per month. The 4,137 square-foot pied-à-terre (I joke) includes an office, library, four and a half bathrooms, two parking spots and beautiful views with their floor-t0-ceiling windows. Want to see more? Check out the pics here.

While the rental may seem crazy, it is small potatoes when compared to the 60th floor “Grand Penthouse” which takes the entire top floor and has eight bedrooms, nine full bathrooms, three half bathrooms and is on the market for $45 million.

Seaport / North Station ferry service could start soon

boston harbour, boston skylineThe construction boom in the Seaport has created more congestion than city planners anticipated and while there have been some pretty crazy suggestions to help alleviate congestion – like an aerial gondola system – the idea of adding ferry service seems to be gaining traction. A privately funded ferry service to shuttle passengers between the Seaport District and North Station has been proposed and could start in early 2019.

It appears that to make this economically viable the organizer behind the concept is looking for a commitment from several large employers in the Seaport. The other reason for the delay is the dock at Lovejoy Wharf near North Station will not be ready until the end of 2018. Stay tuned because unlike the crazy idea of floating gondolas – this idea has a lot of merit and could significantly cut down on commute time for people coming from north of the city. It would be nice to see the Baker Administration, which likes to talk a good game about investing in infrastructure and claims to be championing creative solutions to mass transit step up to the plate and help make this a reality.
