Today NJ says “I do” to same sex marriages

Same Sex MarriageCONGRATULATIONS NEW JERSEY!

Despite the efforts of New Jersey’s Republican Governor, Chris Christie, to block same sex marriages, that state’s Supreme Court ruled against the administration. The ruling means that  NJ can start recognizing and performing  same sex marriages today.

I’d like to welcome New Jersey to the 21st Century and congratulate the efforts of Garden State Equality and others who worked to make this possible. New Jersey becomes the 14th state (plus Washington D.C.) to  legalize same sex marriage. It also means that the entire Northeast region of the  United States now recognize gay marriage.

Paris to host 2018 Gay Games

Paris Gay GamesEarlier this month it was announced that Paris had beat out a handful of other cities to host the 2018 Gay Games.  I’ve never attended the Gay Games, but I love Paris and will use any excuse to write about this city.

No slight intended but this seems like a much cooler host city than the upcoming Gay Games to be hosted in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio the summer of 2014.

Spirit Day is tomorrow, October 17th

GLAADTomorrow is Spirit Day. The day started in 2010 as a way to stand up against bullying and for people to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. All are encouraged to wear purple; the color in the rainbow flag that symbolizes ‘spirit’.

You can learn more about the event by linking to GLAAD’s website, www.glaad.org/spiritday.

Farewell to Fritz

fritz BostonRumors of Fritz’s closing was first whispered to me early this summer, but I paid it little attention.  It seemed strange that such a successful bar would close, but as the rumors persisted it became obvious that there was more truth than fiction and this wasn’t just neighborhood gossip.

Earlier this month Fritz confirmed on Facebook that they are closing at the end of this year. The owner of the Chandler Inn is remodeling the space to turn it into a restaurant and bar and make it more welcoming to the entire neighborhood (cue the bugle to play taps as yet another gay bar bites the dust).

Fritz Boston BarFritz is my favorite place in Boston to watch a game and even though I’m always a fan of seeing new restaurant open, I’m torn and left with a bitter taste by its closure. I’ll miss Fritz.  What are your thoughts?

October 11 – National coming out day

National Coming Out DayEvery year on National Coming Out Day, we celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or as an ally. On Oct. 11, 2013.  This year – the 25th anniversary – theme is “Coming Out Still Matters.”  I couldn’t agree more with this theme and its timing.  2013 has seen some landmark legislation that may have some wondering does this still matter? But rights that have been hard fought can be quickly taken away.

Just a week ago Pennsylvania Republican Governor suggested that same-sex marriage was as comparable to incest.  However, his comments are hardly isolated in the US as a more radical conservative wing of the Republican Party continues to flex its muscle advocating for such despicable practices as Reparative (otherwise known as “Conversion”) therapy.  Additionally, as the world continues to connect through social media, those living in countries abroad can and hopefully do take heart knowing they are not mentally ill or in need of being ‘fixed’.

2014 Orthodox Calendar cover

Each year the makers of this calendar reach out to let me know when their new calendar is available. It has always given me a good laugh – who knew orthodox garb could be so interesting.  Maybe this will give some of you ideas for Halloween costumes later this month.

You can purchase a copy of the 2014 Orthodox Wall Calendar here.
