Pressure on Chick-Fil-A ain’t going away

berenstain-bears-chick-fil-aThe Public Relations department for Chick-Fil-A may hope the controversy stirred up by their president, Dan Cathy, will now go away, but I have no intention of letting this issue drop.

And thanks to 80,000 petition signatures urging the publisher of the Berenstains Bears, HarperCollins, to stop providing books in Chick-fil-A Kids’ meals, I’m not alone either.

Last week representatives from CREDO Action, SumofUs.org and Faithful America delivered the signed petition to HarperCollins.  The SumofUs.org founder had this to say why they collected signatures.

By partnering with Chick-fil-A, a company that actively bankrolls hatred and discrimination against the LGBT community, HarperCollins is undermining the lessons of the beloved Bear family. The Berenstains should follow the Muppets’ lead, and cut ties with Chick-fil-A. HarperCollins has a chance here to make a stand for equality and strike a blow against bigotry.

Cup of Joe

Bo RobertsActually I should call this post “cup of Bo” since this is the very handsome model, Bo Roberts. I figure if your morning cup of joe hasn’t kicked in yet, perhaps this image of Bo will get your attention.

Much thanks to David over at WGB for posting this on his blog last week. It was just the inspiration I needed.

Suddenly it makes sense

Keeping with the aquatic theme from last week’s suddenly it makes sense post, I thought I’d share this very cool photo from the London Olympic games. Why isn’t synchronized diving on every weekend? I can watch this all day long.  Did you watch synchronized diving this year?

What Olympic sporting event(s) do you enjoy watching?

Obama Administration responds to Stop the Deportations

the doma projectThe DOMA Project blog, StopTheDeportations.com, announced late last week that the Obama Administration was expanding its deportation policy to LGBT families.

The DOMA Project was responding to the Deputy Press Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security which in a surprising shift in policy with respect to married same-sex couples facing deportation said on August 1st, “When exercising prosecutorial discretion in enforcement matters, DHS looks at the totality of the circumstances presented in individual cases, including whether an individual has close family ties to the United States as demonstrated by his or her same-sex marriage or other longstanding relationship to a United States citizen.”

Suddenly it makes sense

SwimmerOne of the things I love about the Olympics is that sports not normally televised get prime time viewing.  For example, who didn’t enjoy watching all the swimming events earlier this week?  Even if you don’t swim, I’m fairly certain the appeal of the sport suddenly makes sense.

AIDS in the United States

AIDS infection rates in US

AIDSVu at Emory University has released an interactive map illustrating the prevalence of HIV in the U.S. The AIDSvu map shows the U.S. still has a significant problem with HIV and AIDS.  If you visit their website you may analyze the data by race, age and gender. The deeper shades of red indicate more HIV cases.

~50% newly diagnosed AIDS cases in U.S. are in the South

Eight of the ten U.S. states with the highest rates of new HIV infection are located in the Southeast. High rates of poverty factor in as well, as does the region’s low ranking on many basic health measures.

AIDSVu has pulled together a quick video which reminds us that AIDS still ravages communities and education and prevention remain our most powerful tools to combat HIV and AIDS.

Amazon founder to donate $2.5 million to marriage equality in Washington State

same sex marriageSame Sex marriage advocates have had outspoken supporters in Hollywood with big name actors since the debate started.  More recently  large donations and endorsements for marriage equality have come from successful and much admired business leaders.

Bill Gates (Microsoft founder) and Steve Ballmer (current CEO) revealed they had each donated $100,000 to support the same sex marriage initiative currently being challenged by ballot in Washington State.  Earlier in the year Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of Goldman Sachs, made news when he made a video for Americans for Marriage Equality.

However earlier this week, Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com, and his wife, MacKenzie, made jaws drop when they agreed to donate $2.5 million to help pass a same-sex marriage referendum in Washington State, becoming among the largest financial backers of gay marriage rights in the country.

You can read more about their incredible donation here.
