Yo Amo Puerto Rico

As I type this from my hotel room, I have floor to ceiling sliding glass doors open to have an unobstructed view of the Carribean. Soothing sound of waves crashing below have made it easy to forget today is my last full day here in Puerto Rico. The resulting rainbow (click image to make larger) is from a passing shower; the first since arriving. The weather has been as fantastic as the people watching has been interesting. Within the first 24-hours I snapped, tweeted and blogged about two couples in particular; #SluttyCouple and #DrunkUglyCouple.

WranglerMan left the funniest comment, “Where are you staying? It looks as if the hotel caters to the “Jersey Shore” fan club!” I can see how one might think that, but La Concha Hotel is a “classy joint”. I’m imagining that’s how the cast of the show might describe this place. In addition to these entertaining distractions there have also been a number of interesting gay couples we’ve met and chatted with during our stay. Its easy to spot these guys with their iphones permanently set to Grindr, Scruff and other gay-themed apps all furiously trying to identify some guy’s profile who claims to be just a few feet away. Then there are the clueless, handsome men who have come to get away with a friend, girlfriend or spouse. Really who they are traveling with is of no consequence. I’m just happy to see them poolside and at the beach. They are like nice art; just by virtue of being here they make the hotel more pleasant. When I get home, I’ll post photos I took from my camera. However, til then enjoy these few pics from the past couple of days.

US Census Says Same Sex Couples jumped 17% in Massachusetts

The US Census Bureau reported that the number of same-sex couples in Massachusetts climbed sharply over the past decade; rising 17% to more than 20,000. This is not particularly surprising. Massachusetts continues to lead the nation in passing legislation that protects the rights of the GLBT community (adoption rights, protections in the workplace, marriage equality etc…) As younger gay men and women have come of age – growing up in a socially liberal state where there is less of a stigma it is not surprising to see that many want to move in together or get married.

So despite living through long, cold winters – we’re quite the gay old state. If you’d like to read the Boston Globe article link here.

Men of Twitter

I’m a fan of Twitter. I love how quick and easy it is to use and connect with people. Another perk to this fabulous application is what I refer to as the “men of twitter”. There are so many handsome guys on Twitter. Adding to that attraction is the fact that they only talk in 140 characters 🙂

Although I must say that I think I could listen to @JLAppelbaum (who’s profile pic I’ve posted here) for hours if the opportunity presented itself. Does that make me shallow or a man of good taste? You decide.

@BosGuy

Saturday’s eye candy

I have to wonder if this mystery man has ever tasted ice cream or eaten french fries. I hope not because it would seem tragically unfair for one person to have such a handsome face, fit body and high metabolism. I hope he has someone special in his life, but if not I’m willing to offer myself as a surrogate.

Come fly with me

A little flight attendent humor. I hope you enjoy.

David Kato – GLBT activist murdered

I have been critical of social policy issues pertaining to GLBT rights in the U.S., but I am well aware that I am damn lucky to live in the industrialized world. The rights of all minorities (GLBT included) are non-existent in most developing nations.

One such situation is the ongoing human rights violations in Uganda. Most Americans probably could not identify Uganda on a map – let alone be bothered by what is happening there. However, news that David Kato was murdered made me take pause. Unlike other African activists like Steven Biko and Nelson Mandela, movies and accolades are not likely to follow this man, but out of respect to Mr. Kato and to remind anyone who bothers to read this blog how brave he truly was, I wanted to write a brief post.

David Kato, was a leading advocate for GLBT rights from Uganda where being gay is tantamount to a death sentence. Think I’m exaggerating? The Ugandan Parliament is currently considering a bill to execute anyone who is gay. Can you imagine what it must be like for a scared, gay adolescent (let alone adult) living in such a society? Being an outspoken advocate for human rights / GLBT rights in such a hostile environment is a bravery I can respect but could never hope to replicate.According to the NYT, on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Kato was beaten to death with a hammer. Val Kalende, the chairwoman of one of Uganda’s gay rights groups said, “David’s death is a result of the hatred planted in Uganda by U.S. evangelicals in 2009. The Ugandan government and the so-called U.S. evangelicals must take responsibility for David’s blood.”

It was sad to read this report in the NYT today, and it was shameful to read the reference to U.S. evangelicals (not evangelicals – but those from my home country) as guilty by association in Ms. Kalende’s opinion.

Tennis players who get my attention

Since I received so many emails about my recent Australian Open post, I figured I’d indulge myself (and hopefully anyone else who stops by) with some photos of some of the world’s best tennis players. No disrespect intended for those I did not include. My list is actually a lot longer than this, but one has to draw the line somewhere.
World’s No. 1 Tennis Player, Rafael Nadal (ESP)
No. 8 highest ranked American, Andy Roddick (USA)
No. 9 Fernando Verdasco (ESP)
No. 28 Juan Monaco (ARG)
No. 150 Robby Ginepri (USA)
As you can see you need not be a sports enthusiast to enjoy the game of tennis.

Inspiration

I become emboldened when in the presence of a handsome man so I’ve posted this picture to give me confidence and to seek inspiration. I’m still contemplating the whole No Pants Boston Subway Ride (its really freezing in Boston today).

Just in case you think I’m exaggerating, I’ve included a screenshot of the current weather conditions in Boston (Brrrrrrrrr – that’s chilly).

Fitness goal

So its the start of another year and I’m going to redouble my commitment to the gym. Although it is unlikely I’ll ever see this level of fitness – it is this to which I aspire. My love of ice cream, cheese and butter (not to mention age and genetics) may make this impossible.

Show Tune Tuesday @dbar

For those not familiar with Boston’s gay scene, every Tuesday there is a bar in Dorchester (a Boston neighborhood) that plays show tunes. It has become something of an unspoken tradition that my friend Paul and I meet there on the Tuesday between Christmas and New Years.
Last night’s Show Tune Tuesday crowd I was surprised that this year was less crowded, but it did not impact the fun we had chatting with everyone, and it allowed all my requests to be played 🙂 When the DJ played Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked it was a sight to behold. Rarely do so many people sing with such reckless abandon in public – its really a something to see. Dbar had a slight technical malfunction last night around 10ish when their system died and everything had to revert to cash. Kudos to Brit and the other bartenders who did their best to keep everyone laughing and having a good time. dbar’s handsome bartenders As you can see from the Cazwell video, not all songs are from showtunes, but mind you songs from Hedwig, Hairspray, Grease, The Little Mermaid, several numbers from this season’s Glee episodes all received air time. Should you live in Boston or visit and want to have fun midweek – this is the bar to check out.

Jingle jingle

I hope your bells get jingled this Christmas.

Now that I have your attention…

Here I am blatantly pandering to entice visitors. However, even as I’m posting this, I realize I’m piss poor by comparison to others, but now that I have your attention, feel free to browse my other posts.

2010 Santa Speedo Run video makes the rounds

Hello All – I’m taking a moment to brag about my Santa Speedo Run video which has been picked up by a number of different blogs lately. Dave over at WGB really got the ball rolling for me by posting my video and linking back to my little corner of the internet – thanks Dave.

Earlier today, I found out that Instinct Magazine picked up WGBs pictures and my video, which you can see here.

DanNation also picked up my clip and added a witty headline, which you can see here.

And this evening I came home from the gym to read that the Towleroad has posted my video.

I’m so happy everyone enjoyed it as much as I did and thanks to the handsome guy in his plaid underwear and all the others who offered to pose.

Sen. Brown continues to disappoint me

By the time this is posted anyone who is remotely interested in seeing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) overturned will know that the Republicans in the Senate successfully blocked a vote today. What has me most upset is not the rhetoric from the Republican Leadership, its my Senator – Scott Brown (R) – who indicated he would support the repeal then caved today and voted along party lines.

Ouch! Did you know that Brown has yet to once speak to anyone in the gay media since declaring himself as a candidate for Kennedy’s former seat (double Ouch!) Considering Mass. has one of the highest gay populations in the country, the GLBT voting block is well organized and politically active in this state and that the DADT issue has been a high profile issue for many months – I find his voting record and behavior with regards to local papers like Bay Windows disappointing.
I fully expect my relatives who tend to vote more conservatively than me to vote with their wallets, but I wonder out loud if there are any GLBT voters in this state who either stayed home from the polls or voted against Martha Coakley who wish perhaps they could “turn back time” to quote a gay icon.

Even with Brown’s support the measure would have failed – the measure needed 3 more votes. However, MA has a long and distinguished history of championing individual and civil rights and Brown’s actions (or to be more precise inaction) flies in the face of that tradition. Its days like this that I miss the Lion of the Senate and a personal hero of mine, Teddy Kennedy.

Construction workers

My street is currently a construction zone as teams tear up our street for some unknown reason. When the signs went up last week, I had images similar to this guy here and young, fit 20-something cops hanging around to help with traffic, but alas the fantasy of what might be has been replaced with the cold reality that:

1) Its far too chilly for construction workers in Boston to be outside without a shirt.

2) I’m not so certain I’d like to see this crew without a shirt.

3) I should know better by now that the young 20-something cops in Boston are reserved for far rougher work than standing by chatting with the construction crew and sipping a Dunkin Donuts coffee all day.

C’est la vie.
