#KissesForKim

Jesse Jackman & Dirk Caber

According to an article on Queerty a lot of heterosexual men are tired of Kim Davis and her ilk’s antics. Earlier this week two friends uploaded a video to YouTube with a message for the Notorious K.I.M., giving birth to #KissesForKim. I love their message and think they are on to something.  The LGBT community and our allies are far more influential when we are spreading a message of forgiveness and inclusion than when we react out of anger and seek retribution.

You don’t have to be straight to show your support.  My friends Jesse and Dirk were nice enough to share this photo to show their support.  Do you have a photo you want to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Religious Freedom Restoration Act: The new battle line in LGBT rights in America

RFRA, Homosexuality, LGBT, Gay Rights, Movement Advancement Project, MAPEarlier this week several prominent LGBT blogs wrote about the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) report that suggests the Religious Freedom Restoration Acts passed in 21 states (and counting) will define the new battle lines in LGBT rights in the US.

With marriage equality mostly settled, religious conservatives are claiming their “religious freedom” has been violated and are looking to create exemptions to discriminate against LGBT people. Cultural conservatives through out the 20th century have used “God” and “The Bible” as reasons to oppose and violate laws including a women’s right to vote, civil rights and interracial marriages.

“Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.”
-Judge Leon M. Bazile, January 6, 1959

A rash of  RFRA’s that increasingly target the LGBT community have been passed recently (e.g. Indiana RFRA law which ultimately was rolled-back – in part). Signaling cultural conservatives are looking to use these acts and the courts to institutionalize discrimination under the pretense of “religious freedom”.

Since the start of 2015 lawmakers in 17 states have introduced religious exemption proposals in response to the spread of marriage equality. Below is an image that MAP shares in their report. Select their link above to learn more.RFRA laws in the US

Amish employee refuses to issue drivers licenses, citing RFRA

Not to spell this out for those unfamiliar but many Amish do not drive cars for religious reasons.  The logic of the Kentucky DMV clerk, Kim Davis, who has been denying marriage licenses to a same sex couple follows the same line of logic as shown in the FOX News spoof.  Perhaps now one might realize not only how idiotic her logic is but how her actions do not violate anyone’s religious freedoms except those of the people being denied their right to marry.

Sunday sermon from Pope Francis

PeaceWhile I disagree with Pope Francis on many things, I find myself in agreement with him on many other issues as well; like war and who it really serves.

Both political parties in the US have been far too eager to rely on military might and while there are many reasons for our military involvement abroad, I firmly believe that Pope Francis has explained it perfectly. In our current political landscape, money talks and nobody outspends the US Military Complex. Check out this chart detailing the military industrial complex spending from 2007 – 2017.  Maybe it is time to rethink our military spending?  It looks like we have plenty of money to invest in things like infrastructure, education and even paying down our deficit.

The Republican party is not pro life; their actions speak louder than words

baby, politics, republican, abortionWhen you are against gun control legislation, opposed to ending the death penalty and don’t believe in providing universal healthcare I need to ask, “What about life do you value?”  The pro-life movement in the Republican Party is a marketing gimmick wrapped up in religious fervor and it rings hollow to me.

  • When you argue against common sense gun laws that would help save more than 11,000 deaths by guns per year in the US – you are not pro life.
  • When you oppose ending the death penalty – you are not pro life.
  • When you work to repeal universal healthcare and not replace it with a safety net for your fellow neighbor – you are not pro life.

I can appreciate why individuals for either reasons of faith or personal values would be opposed to abortions, but the value of life isn’t summed up by a single issue. If life is sacred then it is always so – not just as it pertains to abortion rights.

Barry Goldwater’s warning to the Republican Party

Republican Presidential debateFor those who do not know him, Barry Goldwater was a 5-term conservative, US Senator from AZ and the Republican Party’s nominee for president in the 1964. He is credited for sparking the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s.  His prophetic words have come to roost.  It will be interesting to see how this manifests at the first Republican Presidential Primary debate in Ohio tomorrow night on FOX News.

Republican party immigration policy

Republican Immigration platformThe 2016 Presidential campaign season is in full swing and while anyone could win the election, the window of opportunity seems to be shutting for Republican candidates.  I had thought one of the lessons learned by the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee after the 2008 elections was that they need to start building bridges with the all important Latino community.

With California and New York solidly in the Democrat’s back pocket (California last voted for a Republican President in 1988 and New York in 1984) and states like Texas where 38% and Florida where 23% of the population identify as Latino, you have to wonder who are these Republican candidates listening to and what do they think the general electorate thinks of their xenophobic rhetoric.

What’s the definition of “traditional marriage”

Matt Baume has an interesting video that looks at how marriage has been defined through the ages.  You may be surprised by how marriage is defined in The Bible.

Bienvenida Cuba

CubaAfter more than 50 years, the United States officially reopened its embassy in Cuba today.  I hope that this is a sign that travel bans and our embargo will be lifted. Although the repressive Cuban government bans access to the Internet, I still would like to say to all my amigos in Cuba, “Bienvenida. Que pasa?”

Tweet of the day: John Dingell’s Tweet to Trump

John Dingell, Donald Trump, Twitter, John McCain, PoliticsJohn Dingell was a congressman for 59 years before he retired earlier this year. Yesterday Dingell responded to Donald Trump on Twitter after the annoying Republican Presidential candidate accused Senator McCain of being a dummy. Trump’s Tweet was in response to Senator McCain’s comment that Donald has “fired up the crazies” on immigration.  What a pity that it took Dingell to put Trump in his place. What does it say about the character of the other Republican Presidential Primary candidates?

Am I really suppose to believe Republican’s tough talk on foreign policy with Russia’s Putin, Syria’s Assad, and Iran’s Ayatollah, when they run scared from a loud mouthed bully like Trump?

Thanks to Brian Moynihan for the tip on Twittah.

ReTRUMPlican Party on Immigration

Democrats certainly are enjoying themselves, watching what I can only describe as the Donald Trump hour.

While most Republicans do not agree with Trump’s views on Immigration and Immigration Reform, the candidates running for President haven’t exactly worked to create a more welcoming party and have often stoked those same flames.  This might be a classic example of reaping what you sow.

What has been won in the courts can be taken away: LGBT rights

Becky Wegner RommelWith the recent US Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality, many feel elated but the fact remains a lot of Americans remain sympathetic to Becky Wegner Rommel who appears in the video below and while her rant is probably the very definition of manic and easy to giggle at while watching – let’s remember this woman votes.

Becky’s bat-shit crazy rant should serve as a reminder that the 2016 Presidential election remains even more important to our community.

What has been won in the courts can be undone, and if Becky and those sympathetic to her get their way that is what will happen.  That’s why I don’t find this video funny.  I find it frightening.

Every Republican running for President denounces marriage equality ruling

Republican Primary Clown ShowAs the euphoria of last week’s US Supreme Court ruling on marriage fades, a sobering (but not surprising) realization should come to everyone who both supports marriage equality and LGBT rights – every Republican Presidential candidate has denounced the marriage equality ruling.

The NY Times has an interesting article on this which you can read here. One would expect Republican hopefuls like Gov. Mike Huckabee to denounce the ruling but the campaign to convince America that the Republican party has “moderates” running (e.g. Jeb Bush) starts to ring hollow when they too start sounding more like Gov. Huckabee or Sen. Santorum and immediately decry a verdict that by most polls now show more than 60% of Americans support.

Mark my words.  With resounding defeats and a growing acceptance of the LGBT community, those who oppose such equality will now change their tone, using language like “Religious Freedom” as part of their campaign to rollback whatever rights have been earned.  Listen carefully for this coded language esp. from the supposed ‘moderates’ who are anything but moderate but are in a campaign to convince America otherwise.  Language will change tone but not intent as they attempt to appeal to both swing voters and those longing for “the good ol’ days”, A.K.A. when being gay was criminalized, the Confederate Flag was described as a symbol of “Southern Pride” and minorities didn’t account for an increasing majority of America’s voting population.

Stephen Colbert mocks Justices Roberts and Scalia

Yesterday Stephen Colbert released a video mocking US Supreme  Court Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Scalia who both dissented on the Marriage Equality ruling.  Pity he didn’t take on homophobe Justice Clarence Thomas who’s absurd dissent invoked images of slavery.

“The corollary of that principle is that human dignity cannot be taken away by the government. Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved. Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them. And those denied governmental benefits certainly do not lose their dignity because the government denies them those benefits. The government cannot bestow dignity, and it cannot take it away.”

Australian comedian perfectly sums up why other countries think US gun laws are crazy

I’m a firm believer that humor is a great way to address touchy subjects.  While I doubt this video will change any minds, it is hard to argue with this Australian’s take on America’s love of guns. Much thanks to my sister Susan for sharing; just note that there are a lot of F-bombs in his monologue.
