Sam Tsui – King of Anything

Its been awhile since I’ve posted something from YouTube sensation, Sam Tsui, and a quick visit to YT shows a whole batch of new covers he’s taped. As usual, he adds his own flair, interpreting pop songs in his own unique way. Enjoy Sam’s take on Sara Bareilles song, King of Anything.

Other videos from Sam that I’ve posted in the past include:
Michael Jackson Medley
Don’t Stop Believing
Lady Gaga Medley

You’re amazing just the way you are

Tonight a scene from the Fox TV show, Glee, had a wedding scene that touched my heart, cheesy as it was. No matter how confident and comfortable I am in my own skin – I wish this show was on television when I was a teenager.

Were you bullied? If you were – can you relate to the storyline? I’d like to hear from you.

Largest flashmob evah…

To paraphrase Oprah… “That is so cool.” Watch the largest flash mob evah (pardon the Boston accent). The BEP’s helped kick off Oprah’s 2009 season with the largest flash mob ever. Oprah’s expressions are priceless.

Every (gay) teenager’s dream: Darren Criss

If you watch Glee, you’ve been talking to friends about Kurt’s potential love interest played by, Darren Criss. He sang his way into my heart on Tuesday when he appeared on this week’s episode of Glee, breathing life into what has otherwise been a ho-hum season.

According to IMDB, Criss grew up in San Francisco and graduated from University of Michigan in 2009. Although this last bit of information was not on IMDB, from what I’ve read online, Darren is not gay. However, he is exceedingly easy on the eyes so I’ve shamelessly pulled down some photos to include him here on my blog. You can also check out Darren serenading Kurt with a fantastic rendition of Perry’s, Teenage Dream by linking here.

Serenading Kurt: Teenage Dream

Watching Glee makes me wish I could be a teenager all over again. Its hard for me to imagine having TV shows w/ characters like Kurt on air. I grew up thinking I was mentally ill and only sexually depraved individuals were attracted to the same sex.

Its quite hard to articulate the impact that had but many of my contemporaries and certainly men older than me understand. I suppose that is partly why I can watch clips like this serenading of Kurt over and over again. Its hard for me to fathom that pop culture has moved so far in such a short period. Fear not, political changes are inevitable when clips like this play in middle America and ratings place Glee as one of the most popular shows in prime time.

Rizzoli & Isles: New Boston television drama series

Tonight I watched the new TNT drama, which follows two detectives Jane Rizzoli (played by Angie Harmon) and medical examiner Maura Isles (played by Sasha Alexander). The episode was chalk-full of Boston scenes – fortunately nobody tried to fake a Boston accent. Who can tell if the series will be successful, but I enjoyed watching the show.

Sunday’s guilty pleasure: Cazwell

Massachusetts native, Cazwell, is getting a lot of attention with gay bloggers. His video “Meet me at the ice cream truck” received more than 600,000 hits in its first 7-days. And with nearly every gay blogger posting the YouTube clip, the number of views will certainly continue to climb quickly. You can watch or download the video by linking here.

BTW – Should anyone be looking for me, I’ll be out by the ice cream truck looking for Cazwell and his crew.

Jane Lynch marries partner in MA

The Boston Globe (and several other news outlets) are reporting that Jane Lynch and her partner tied the knot at the Blue Heron restaurant in Sunderland, MA over the Memorial Day weekend.  I loved Jane Lynch in the movie Best in Show and think she is brilliant as the over-the-top Cheerios coach.  My congrats to Jane and Sue this past weekend.

Gaga about Glee

I love this show. Who would have ever thought a musical drama about high school would be so successful. Wow, the scene with Kurt’s Dad and Finn was the most emotionally surprising I can remember ever seeing on television. If you are a fan and missed the show, you can check it out on hulu.com.
Here is a video of Lady Gaga – the muse of tonight’s show.

I’m Gaga about this cover

OMG – this 13 year old kid is amazing.  Check out the audience reactions as they realize this kid can really sing.  Thanks to Brenton over at Aussielicious and Dave over at WGB for bringing this to my attention. My school recitals were nothing like this.

WWMD?

Did you watch Glee? Do you know what the acronym WWMD stands for?  I do, now that I’ve seen this week’s show.  I’m embarassed by how much I enjoy watching this show and this week really put me over the edge with an entire episode dedicated to Madonna songs.

It is tough to pick my favorite scene from this week’s show, but I think it would probably be when Kurt speaks to Sue Sylvester in her office w/ Mercedes after Mr. Schuester schooled Sue about her Florence Henderson-like hair cut in the hallway.

“Mercedes is black and I’m gay.  We make culture.”

Favorite Madonna song from tonight’s show… well that’s just too hard to pick, but hearing “Gambler” over the intercom was certainly the biggest surprise.  I love that song and never hear it.  The song I most would have liked to have heard…. “Get into the Groove”.

How television networks should really market themselves

Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe wrote an interestingly funny article back in November that I forgot to post until today.  In his article, Matthew writes, what if the networks and cable channels promoted themselves as they really are? He surmised that their names, slogans, and mission descriptions might look something like this. I’ve chosen a couple of my favorites.

NBC =  SDTV: Self-Destructive TV
We dig ourselves deeper into the hole!
At SDTV, we don’t fool around when it comes to ruining our network. By placing our future in the hands of personalities such as Howie Mandel, Donald Trump, and Jay Leno, we pretty much guarantee our own failure.

Bravo = GLBTv
For Grace and her favorite Will
Need some fabulous fashion advice? Want a lesson in trendy lingo? We know absolutely everything about clothes, real estate, and hair. Plus, we have Kathy Griffin. Let us be your gay best friend.

Fox News = Fox “News’’
Who cares if it’s true?
In our shop, we believe that too much value is placed on facts. We’d rather just go after anything that moves in that unbalanced, unfair, democratic, liberal, commie kind of way. You know what we mean. If you like screeds, we’ll be there for you.

ABC pilot filming in South End: Boston’s Finest

An ABC pilot show called Boston’s Finest is shooting scenes outside of my neighborhood cafe, The South End Buttery.  The catering trucks currently line Washington Street and the corner of Shawmut Ave and Union Park are blocked off.  The inside of the Buttery has been turned into a sort of holding pen for many of the extras and some of the wardrobe.  While I was ordering my lunch I did happen to see New England native,Treat Williams, walk by, which was sort of cool.  I was told that the filming for the pilot concludes today so I will be able to get my lunch and afternoon coffee without competing for space with all the extras who were essentially just sitting still and taking up space.

Need some ideas for your next date?

The Boston Globe has interviewed local celebrities asking how they would spend an evening in Boston. Some of the ideas are pretty interesting and I might check out.  After living in Boston for a number of years you start to take for granted the options available on any given night.  While Boston might not have as much to offer as some larger cities, there is still plenty to do.

Running out of ideas for your Friday night or are you stumped by an upcoming date and you want to make it special?  Check out these suggestions by local celebrities.

Men on football

In honor of the Super Bowl, which took place yesterday, here is a classic skit from the 80s show, In Living Color.

Thanks to Bill in Exile for sharing this video clip. It is a bit dated but remains funny for sure.
