The Great Schlep

Crass and vulgar yes, but I love Sarah Silverman and I love the fact that she has made this video encouraging all of her Jewish friends to ‘get on a plane’ to visit their grandparents in Florida and tell them to vote for Obama.

I love Tina Fey and Amy Poelher and they were spot on in their respective characters to introduce SNL this past Saturday night. I’m sorry I missed the show if it was half as funny as these two were to open the show.

Last night I attended the George Michael tour at the TD Banknorth Boston Garden. The tour only has a few more dates left in the U.S., but the show did not appear tired or slow – in fact, I think George Michael was enjoying himself nearly as much as the crowd.

Despite a late start, George Michael proved to be worth the wait. The show lasted a bit over 2 hours and he proved himself quite capable of entertaining a stadium sized audience. To be sure there were several songs missing from his line-up that I would have loved to hear, but he compensated by including some surprise choices like a slow, jazzy cover of Roxanne.

I’ve included a link to the glowing Boston Globe review and below is the cover version of Roxanne from his show earlier this week in New York.

Almost perfect and absolutely beautiful

These are two of the most beautiful dancers I’ve watched this season on my guilty pleasure television program, SYTYCD. I still can not believe Will is not going to be in the finals.

Kate Hudson in the N’hood

There are nearly a dozen or more trailers lining Washington and Union Park Street with film crews running around filming scenes for an upcoming movie starring Kate Hudson. I’m not sure what the movie is or if it is related to any of the filming she was doing here last fall, but it was surreal to see New York City cabs lining my neighborhood and huge movie lights lit up so bright that I had to shade my eyes when I walked by them. Earlier this morning, film crews were busy moving furniture around at Pho Republique restaurant while nearly a score of extras were pretending to eat dinner even though it was only 11:00am.

I’m sure more information about the filming will be reported in either the Boston Globe or the South End News, so if I find out more I’ll be sure to add it on my blog. Back in the fall I wrote about a bunch of filming that was going on in the Backbay in my entry called “Celebrities”. The increased filming was attributed to aggressive legislation the State of Massachusetts passed that gave filming crews tax credits when they filmed in the state. I’m sure the state is pleased to have all this filming and despite the tax breaks you can not deny that money is being spent (and from the looks of it – a lot of money). So kudos to the state for making this happen. For residents of L.A. and other major cities this sort of thing is probably old hat, but it still strikes me as a bit of a novelty.

Kathy Griffin Fired from Hannah Montana

I’m going to see Kathy Griffin perform in Boston on Saturday, May 3rd and I’m very excited. Her brand of humor is cutting and sarcastic – just the way I like my comedy.

The popular website JustJared is reporting that Kathy was recently axed from the popular Disney Channel show, Hannah Montana, because she told Jesus to “suck-it”. A Disney Channel executive said it isn’t so. I could not imagine why they would want to have Kathy on their network she has repeatedly mentioned how much children drive her crazy. I love her humor but I doubt she sits well with Disney’s viewership.

I’m curious if she will mention the recent news in her stand up on Saturday…

Margaret Cho

Tonight I am going to see Margaret Cho at the Orpheum. Margaret is a raunchy, pull no punches loud mouth who laces her comedy with a political punch. I have watched her performances (“I’m the one that I want“, “Notorious C.H.O“, etc) for years. Last year I enjoyed watching her emcee the True Colors Tour when it came to Boston. However, tonight should be far more entertaining and I am excited to get out and hear her act. I can only imagine what she might have to say about the our current President and the Democratic Primary.

F*cking Matt Damon

Both Sarah Silverman and Matt Damon are local celebs who have made a name for themselves in recent years. I am a fan of both Sarah and Matt but I had no idea they knew each other or ever worked together until now. The video is very tongue and cheek and typical Silverman. I think it is a riot and is for obvious reasons getting a lot of hits on YouTube.

Vote for Boston!

Boston has been named as one of 68 cities nominated for a place on the new Monopoly board when the first world edition of the classic game goes on sale in the autumn. Hasbro Inc. (maker of the popular board game) is letting people vote among the various cities for a place on the game through the website starting, Tuesday and February 22nd.

The top 20 cities will win a place on the board. Other nominated cities include New York, St. Petersburg, Athens and Tokyo. The 20 cities that receive the most votes will be placed on the board according to where they rank from highest rent to lowest rent properties.

Vote for Boston and spread the word to your friends!

People say the funniest things

Kathy Griffin co-hosted CNN’s live broadcast with Anderson Cooper on New Year’s Eve, and I thought the witty response attributed to Anderson was a funny way to start a weekly entry I’m calling “People say the funniest things.”

“Don’t worry, I’m not watching your figure either.” – CNN anchor Anderson Cooper to Kathy Griffin during CNN’s live broadcast. Griffin had just commented that she wasn’t watching her figure.

Everything they sang was magic…

On Sunday, November 11th I went to see the Police on the second leg of their farewell tour. They came to Boston earlier this summer and played Fenway Park, but I was unable to get tickets to that event.

This weekend, I was able to score tickets to see the band as they rocked Boston one last time and it was worth every penny. They played most of their hits and the show was great. If you get the chance to see them on any of their remaining dates, I would definitely recommend seeing them.

Celebrities

Celebrities in Boston

In my humble opinion, Boston is more of a large town rather than a big city. However, because it played such a prominent role in American history, politics and culture (especially in the 20th century), the city’s image to those who have never visited is larger than life. Needless to say, Boston does not appear on many celebs radar screens unless they are born here and have family still in the area (e.g. Jay Leno, Matt Damon, Ben and Casey Affleck, Bridgette Moynihan, etc…) As a matter of fact in all my time living in Boston I’ve seen far more musicians than actors.

However, lately Boston has had more than its share of celebrity sightings. Indeed, by L.A. or NYC standards, our sightings would be considered ‘cute’ or ‘quaint’, but as compared to the recent past, there seeems to be a rash of A-list celebrities walking about town and filming here.

In the last month Kate Hudson, Alec Baldwin, Jason Biggs, and Dane Cook were in town filming scenes from their upcoming film, “Bachelor 2”.

Jada Pinkett-Smith, Annette Bening, Debra Messing Candice Bergen and Meg Ryan have all been spotted ordering their double chai lattes at local Starbucks and popping into one of the many boutiques that line Newbury Street (Boston’s version of Rodeo Ave) while filming “The Women”.

And two personal favorites, Steve Martin and Andy Garcia have been all over the BackBay filming “Pink Panther 2”.

The reason for the increased filming is two-fold, a recent tax credit given to film makers that makes it quite affordable as compared to other locations and the weak American Dollar which makes filming in Europe and other parts of the world even more cost-prohibitive. Hence filming movies like Pink Panther 2 – which is suppose to take place in Paris.

The local paper, The Boston Globe, provides a nice collection of photos from many of the celebrities listed above. To view these you can link to Celebrities in Boston.
