Rooftop bar coming to new Southie hotel

Boston Cambria Hotel, Meyer Jabara Hotels Eater Boston reported last week that the new hotel going up in Southie just blocks from the South End line will have a rooftop bar, but don’t start making plans just yet because the hotel is not expected to open until early 2019.

Located just across from the Broadway Bridge which separates the South End from Southie, the hotel at 6 West Broadway will be part of a new condo complex with 159 rooms, a gym, and a rooftop bar. Specifics about the rooftop bar’s food and drink menus are not available but this section of Southie has a growing list of good restaurants (e.g. The Maiden and Worden Hall) so there is plenty of reason to have high hopes for this forthcoming watering hole that is stumbling distance from the South End and easily accessible to the Red Line.

Boston’s newest (and coolest) cafe: Explorateur

Explorateur opened earlier this month in Boston’s historic Masonic Lodge at the corner of Boylston and Tremont Street. The new space overlooks a busy corner of the Boston Common where you can grab breakfast and lunch in their cafe or dinner in their restaurant seven days a week.

They describe themselves as a community-focused, all-day dining, European styled cafe, bar and restaurant. The cafe is filled with long community tables that let you spread out (which also conveniently have outlets) as well as smaller cafe-style tables where you can sit quietly with a friend to catch up. Eater Boston has some great photos of Explorateur’s interior here.

Strictly for research purposes of this blog I ordered a few bites from the cafe. In addition to the typical sweets and pastries you would expect the cafe provides heartier options for breakfast including omelets, pancakes and a chocolate-hazelnut French toast (that I’ll have to try on my next visit). The coffee, quiche and breakfast sandwich were all very good although the orange juice (not shown) was a bit off so perhaps stick to fully caffeinated beverages if you try the cafe.Explorateur BostonStop by and check out this great space and let me know what you think of Explorateur.  I’ll reserve a proper review for a future dinner in their restaurant.

Battle of the Sexes opens today

I’m not much of a fan of going to the movies, but this true story of the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and douchebag Bobby Riggs, may actually get me to go to the theater.

Emma Stone looks very believable as King and Steve Carroll appears every bit as obnoxious as Riggs who unfortunately also happens to remind me of another DB who currently lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:
I’m the home of a tribe. A reason to hesitate. A chance to drink & dine. A scheduled date. What am I?

The “Hat Sisters” at the Esther Williams Water Ballet at Herring Cove 1985

Approximately one year ago on September 24, 2016, John Michael Grey (shown far left) who was one half of The Hat Sisters passed away. Grey is survived by his partner Timothy O’Connor. I wanted to share this photo which is part of a larger grouping of very happy photos of this wonderful couple on a Facebook page dedicated to the legacy of Grey and the Hat Sisters.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share?
